Gulf of Mexico boat!!
Big swell and chop must not be quite an issue as it here in the NW. Money must not be either!! My brother down in New Orleans just sent me this picture of his best friend's new boat:
Yes, there's THREE 300hp Yamaha's hanging on the back of that thing!!! They're fishing on out for some billfish this coming weekend, supposedly the thing will do 65+ MPH on decent water. YIKES!! I think it would even eat up the Black Rocket

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
Nice boat.
You might be right about beating the rocket on flat water but I'll bet the farm on the rocket if you add an 8' swell and 3' chop!

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
I don't understand these boats. Why would you have a boat that big with out a top? If you were going to be 50+ miles off shore, wouldn't a top be nice? I don't care if you live in Florida. Also, 3 300's,50 grand, crazy. You would need to turn your boat into a floating gas tank. Miami Vice is dead.

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
It's a right coast thing I think. Besides, that boat does have a top sort of maybe, more like an sun-brella huh?
I wouldn't bet on the Rocket taking this boat in rough water. I think the rocket would spend too much time in the air to maintain a bite on the water.
It looks like an offshore racing hull design, Probably only 9 foot beam on a well over 30 foot boat. Long and skinny= fast in rough water. Cuts through instead of jumping over.
Better have you're snorkel on for this baby though, you'd eat a LOT of water. I think you'd need triple 300hp bilge pumps in it too!

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
It's called a Bimini top. Like the center console driving position and no windshield, pretty much typical of Gulf and east coast boats.
900 horses on a boat is too much unless you are competing in the unlimited offshore race in Key West 2nd week of November.

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
Way to much HP, but a fishing machine. Just like a dory, you get to fish from 360 degrees.
Most of these have wider beams than you think. The length just makes them look skinny. There are a few builder of these CC's that make awesome hulls that would last here in the NW, but for every one good hull builder, there are ten bad hull builders.
Check out www.hottestpursuit.com for an awesome version.

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
I'll get some more specifics out of him.... fuel capacity, beam, etc. We're going down there next October for my brother's wedding...hope the bachelor party includes a billfish trip on that thing!!
Why do they have all the room forward on these boats? Look in the background, there's several others that are rigged similar.

Id take it in a pinch and make it work i would like to know how much gas it holds and what kind of range it has. The open front of that size must be for dancing girls

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
Swell and wind chop are most definitely not such a big deal. When I go back and visit my home town in SE Texas, we usually make a trip 20-40 miles off shore to fish around the oil platforms.
When the waves are 3-4 feet everyone talks about how extreme the weather is! Unless a storm is near, I think my 15' sea hunter would only be limited by fuel.
(Not having any cover is a problem. I personally find spending all day under the full sun miserable, especially after living in the NW for a few years.)

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
When I brought my 45 Bayliner from Boca Ratan across the Gulf to Galvaston we faced waves equal to our coast summer ones,Traveled with a 60 ft Hataras and his interior bulk heads were torn loose. They have very little water depth so their waves can be close and steep.Nice to get home fast before the blow.

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
Having just moved from that part of the country....
Speed - these boats are used in kingfish (King Mackrel) tournaments. The largest fish win the prize, and the largest fish are seldom caught in the vacinity of where the tournament is held. It is not unusual for a boat to run 200+ miles in order to fish and win the tournament. The prizes are substantial ($50K +) per tournament. Off Savannah, a run to the gulf stream meant 80 to 100 miles. Leave the dock at 3A and hope to have the baits in the water by 7A. Speed is everything - more fishing time on the water. The larger the Length/Beam ratio, the better the boat handles chop (the predominate issue in the SE). So, a long thin boat handles chop much better than a wide boat.
No top - just fish in 100+ degree weather for a summer. When you stop the boat to land the fish - the rest of the crew want you to hurry up and put it in gear to get the wind flowing again. The T-Top is simply for getting out of the sun. The only other alternative would be for an A/C unit. The center console design allows for easy 360 degree access. Hooking up a marlin or large Wahoo it's a great feature to be able to walk all around the boat while chasing the fish.
Sure, these are expensive boats - to buy and operate, but many times sponsers help - especially the SKA (Southern Kingfish Association) tournament boats.
PS: Check out my home page - it's what I now run out here - although I had to put up wind screens - not much 100+ degreee weather here!!!

Re: Gulf of Mexico boat!!
I've seen them before, just don't understand them. Why would you have an open bow boat, that big, that far off shore?
How much gas do you think that she carries, and what kind of range?
