Default Anyone hunt with a Portuguese Water Dog?

With the president elect narrowing down his search for a new family dog. It appears that the PWD is one of the potential breeds they are considering. I was curious if anyone on Ifish had any experience hunting with one of these dogs?

If he takes up Duck Hunting, now that would be a real CHANGE!

I don't want to take your post too far off topic... Our dog died last fall at age 13. Our next dog will be a PWD. I've been reading about them and visiting PWD web sites for a couple of years. I've never read about any other breed that had so many good traits and no bad traits. One site said that a "Portugese Water Dog is the only creature that will be more obsessed with your boat than you are." One site had a list of PWD breeders in Oregon and Washington. Good luck!

Make sure the breeder you select is breeding hunting dogs and not show/pet dogs. I know there are at least a couple of North American breeders who have actual hunting dogs. You may have to wait a while so if you're in a hurry another breed may be the correct route to take. There is that old saying, "anything worth having is worth waiting for." This is especially true with hunting dogs.

I'm not a fan of their "average" temperament, but they are intelligent dogs with a strong work ethic to say the least. Back in the '80s I knew a breeder in the Valley who was into them...they're not for me but like I said they are a real serious go get them dog no doubt.
