Razor Rendezvous
I am planning to book a Seaside vacation home for the 20th and 21st of December.
We will have some excellent minus tides that weekend and should be able to limit before dark if we follow the tide out.
It would be great if we could put together a TA meeting of sorts.
Anybody interested?

Hey where's Kamloops? He's got a Cabin in Gearhart and has been clamming every tide. Too close to the Holiday for me, that's the weekend I start shopping.

Re: Razor Rendezvous
Kamloops,
I was actually thinking about Gearhart. I hear just down from DQ is a decent beach. Lodging was easier to find in Seaside. Sounds like you might know the lay of the land a little better than I. I know the Wa. beaches much better than Or.
Nice to have a good resource closer to home. Hope it lasts a while.
John, I'll call you tomorrow.
Bug_Flicker, Puffins Crew, glad to have the company.
Everyone....watch this thread for updated info.
Mel....you can shop the outlet stores in Seaside or better yet buy the wife all the stuff she doesn't realize she needs at Englunds!

Fishplay,
Great, we'll go to my "secret" spot, proly together with everyone else in Gearhart.
I thought I had Mel talked into clamming "clamming virgin you know" but he chickened out at the last minute.

Re: Razor Rendezvous
Royalfish is correct. A closure has been issued on Razor clamming. However; the closure is for all beaches south of Seaside to the California border. Clatsop beaches remain open from Seaside North to the Columbia.

Re: Razor Rendezvous
The following is the lastest info from OR Dept of Ag site. Link is below.
Quote:
Nov.5 Mussels collected from Gold Beach and Coos Bay during the week of Oct 27th reveal paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin levels have dropped to well within the safe range. This finding permits an opening of the south coast for all shellfish harvesting except razor clams (Nov 5, 2003 news release).
At the time of this posting, non-razor clams (cockles, gapers, little necks, etc.) and mussels are safe for harvest in all areas, coastwide – on the beach or in the bay.
Razor clams from south coast sites continue to test well above the safe range for domoic acid. This means all razor clamming, on the beaches and in the bays, south of Seaside remains closed. Regular sampling will continue as tides and weather permit.
The good news is -- Razor clams collected from Clatsop Beach (Seaside north to the Columbia River) continue to support the opening of this area, effective October 1, 2003. Shellfish toxins can increase quickly if there is a new bloom of the algae that produces domoic acid.

I'm thinking about going. Never dug clams at night. Sounds like fun.

Re: Razor Rendezvous
I thought that the Wash. beaches were open at the same time, but they open the 21st through the 23rd of Dec. I might show up for the Oregon dig and then we can all go to Wash for their dig and stay at my house there are 5 beds and lots of floor space. My house is in Ocean Park Wash.

Re: Razor Rendezvous
I heard the Washington beaches experienced a devistating die off and the razor clamming sucked this year.
What do you know about this Mike?

Re: Razor Rendezvous
Fishplay,
I just started razors this yr and my success has been fantastic. I have found that the reported 1 or 2 hrs before the low will get you into clams but that the majority will be smaller as the tide receeded. Best beach to start at for large clams and abundance is 4 hrs before low tide (1st 60 yds exposed). 2 limits of large clams for every trip in under 30 mins. avoid these while digging, dense sand areas, sand that has ripple structure when the water receeds, and large mounding sand areas. Have the calendar marked for all 3 days..can't wait!!

Re: Razor Rendezvous
Sounds good to me Kamloops. Lets say 2:00pm Friday and Saturday and 3:00pm on Sunday.
We will be meeting at Gearhart.
If your driving north on Hwy 101 from Seaside, take a left at the Dairy Queen, that is the main Gearhart Entrance. Watch your speed- 20miles per hour everywhere in Gearhart.
Proceed thru the 1st and only blinking red light in town then take the next legal right hand turn at the tennis courts.
Go North 1/2mile and take a left on the beach access road.
There is a sign located on the beach 300yards from the end of the paved road instructing vehicles to not drive or park south of this sign.
We'll park there.
