Default Newell Reels

Just got back from Fishermen's. Picked up a Newell 338-5 reel that was clearance priced (last one). It is 5:1 retrieve and rated for 470yds of 25lb.

I have always admired these reels and I know that at one time they were leading edge but have probably been surpassed by now. I thought it might make a good live-bait tuna reel.

Any of you guys fish with these?

I have a Newell 4/0 topless wide spool conversion but have yet to Tuna test it.
This will be the year and I am truly looking forward to it.

Yep, I've got a trio of them. There have been many, many changes in the materials & designs of these reels over the years, every possible combination of graphite, aluminum, and stainless steel you can imagine. One thing is for sure though: for a saltwater reel, Newells cast better than just about anything out there. That 338 is just right for 30 lb, but 25 would be fine too. Good choice!

Nice reels. Bought my first one back in the early 90's. I lived in Morro Bay CA back then. I still have them today. First I've heard of them up here though.

I fished with an early Newell reel that I got some time around 1987. It was my favorite reel until a buddy with salmon slimy hands lost it at Buoy 10. I used it in So. CA for live bait fishing and for casting jigs for Calicos and whatever else we could find.

Thanks for the replies. I think I saved about $50 on it. Seems like a well made reel and the box sez not to lubricate the gears, ever!

Haven't fished a Newell for a long time -- They were THE reel on the near and offshore boats. If I rember correctly the 338 drag washers are interchangeable with Penn 500 -- the Newell drags are better but in a pinch the penns do fit. The last fish I caught on a Newell was a 50# class Bluefin on 30# -- WOW! That was fun
