Looking for a tuna boat
Would like to know how you feel about boat safty! I know a boat is only about as safe as the skipper but am looking for somthing big enough I can put on a trailer or at least not spend a arm and a leg mooring at the coast.looking for a potty and bed for mama and a coffiee maker for me.
Now for the problem, only got about 20k to work with. Would like to spend less because I know I'll want to give it my own pesonal touch.
So what do you have and how dos'e she work out.
thanks Walleyed

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
There's a 28 or 30 foot (I paced it off, looked like 30) Tolly sitting on a trailer right off hwy 30 just East (South?... ah heck, towards PDX) of Scapoose. Asking 19K, Twin Inboards, Gotta be small block chevs. Looks like a nice big cockpit.
Cabin Bulkhead looks a little rough (nedds some finish, hull looks in good shape from the ground. I took a couple pics on my digital I can send you if you'd like. That's assuming I can figure out how to get them out of the chip and into the puter! (it's new). I got the phone number off the sign too.
This boat is to big to trailer- you'd have to moor it. Mooring at the coast (at least up here) is actually cheap relative to the PDX area. 500 a year or so for a 30 footer (compared to 150 a month around PDX).

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
I know of a 1982 26' glasply in Albany. Power was rebuilt 3 yrs ago with little use. The guy is asking $15 k. Haven't looked at it myself. If you are interested, let me know.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
I'd try to stay away from a boat that needs to be moored. I can guarantee that you will want to work on it for the first few months and that can be pretty hard when it's not at home, plus a boat with twin anything for power means twice the fuel and twice the amount of working parts that will need work. Fishing out of different ports is also very important to me.
I bought a 22', V8, Reinell walkaround cuddy that has a small bed, ice box, and alcohol stove in it for $13,000, and I bet I have about $17,000 in it now. I've only used this boat in the salt for the two years I've owned it. I go tuna fishing any decent weekend up to about 40 miles or so, and put another 25 gallons of fuel in it for the upcomming season. I feel very comfortable in this boat out that far and most of the boats I fish with are about the same size. If I buy another boat it will be in the 25' or 26' range for more fishing space but still trailerable.
Once you fish the ocean on a regular basis you'll never want to fish freshwater again. The solitude is incredible, but when other Ifish boats are around it makes it even more fun.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
dang it, I thought I had this out of my system. Here I go thinking about the perfect boat out of Newport/Depoe Bay. Lets see, about 24 ft, 200hp saltwater outboard, 100 gal fuel, easy to trailer with threequarter ton rig. The list goes on and on. Even money dosen't make much difference as I haven't spent a dime on this dream. But with time and this board, it is getting closer, but oh the pain........

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
Come fish on my boat and tell me what you think.
Also, check HERE for the Wakem Stackem. You will be hard pressed to find a better deal if it is still for sale.
Send me a PM if you would like to fish on Sea Lion
I love my boat. I made the right choice for me and I'm loving it.
Easy to tow, cheap to operate. Comfortable for overnighting and it is a fish killing machine everywhere from the River to 40 miles offshore.
My new 4 stroke really sips the fuel too

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
Keta- Twin Inboards (not I/O's) could be vee drives I guess- can't tell from the ground but I don't think so, strait shafts/gears I'd guess.
You guys are correct about the trailer boats if that what you want to do. I've done both, the Jury's been deliberating and is still hung on it (for years now). I really like having a beach cabin on the water I can stay at (with family/friends and fishing partners).
Nice even when I'm not fishing! Don't miss the launches at all and it's nice to have the boat in the water and the coffee on at 4 am ready to rock and roll (you can slip a trailer boat so that's not a big deal- but finding a slip part time can be).
The downside is yes- can't haul out and be in Port Hardy in 2 days for a couple hundred in road gas. And yes- it is a pain to get the boat hauled but that's only needed every couple years. Most work can be done in the water and that's actually fun although packing stuff up and down the dock is a lot of excersize.
Now we all now the real answer to this. You just need way more than one boat.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
5 boats would just about cover it all. At the most I had 3 (not counting a canoe) but now I'm down to 2 if a canoe counts as a boat.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
You said it best Mel - you need one for every occasion. Before I got married, I had 3! 15', 24', 36'. Now, down to 1 - 22'. So... You can read between the lines.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
I am sure that there are others who can give you great detail, but 6000 sounds pretty fair with a 3/4 ton truck. Go a bit slow up the hills but you will get there. Good luck with your quest

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
Don't forget to factor in the boat (on trailer) weight when fully loaded, with full fuel tanks, and all that ice for that tuna.

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
I was pulling my 14,000 lb, 30 ft. catamaran with my old 3/4 ton Chevy P.U.,
but I think I was putting the hurt to it! The truck was only rated for
10,800 lb towing capacity. I've since upgraded to the chevy 3/4 ton HD with
the Duramax Deisel that is rated at 16,800 lbs. Better fit for me and my
boat. However, YOUR 3/4 ton PU should have no problems towing 6k lbs (IMHO).

Re: Looking for a tuna boat
Gas is fine but diesel is better.
Both will get the job done but the diesel will do it more efficiently and last a lot longer.
Since I switched to diesel I'll never switch back and my heaviest boat is less than 6000 lbs. I get 16 mpg and I can go as fast as I'd like up any hill without having to redline the motor.

I'm down to 6 right now but 2 are dinghies and 3 are either ready for flower boxes or need some work and sold. Another winter project! I can't keep up with the maint. on 1 any more.
