Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
Interesting first post.....
For starters, don't be looking for someone with dogs... that's not legal. 2nd: there are cougars near K Falls. I saw one off 140 near the lakes this fall.
Welcome aboard. It is customary to post an introductory story. Good luck.

Customary but with a board with several thousand posters not all that realistic or meaningful.
Shoot a cougar. hmmmmmm. I want to fly an f16. Heck, I want to catch a big steelhead. Come to think of it I want a billion dollars too.
But ... follow your dream. Go buy a goat and stake it out in the deep woods for a couple weeks, get yourself some night vision gear and hope the wind is with you. You can do it.

not to discourage you but you might want to look into the price of a full body cougar mount first and then once you save up the money, go get one!

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
I'm not trying to put you down but you do realize that the Cougar is THE most elusive wary animal in all the woods don't you. You try to track a cougar and he will be behind YOU in an hour. He'll have a good laugh at you and then vanish.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
You want to shoot a cugar?
1. Buy Tag
2. Get rifle
3. Walk into woods (w/rifle)
4. Prepare for years of disappointment
There's a reason half the dudes in Cheshire keep their 7mm's in their trucks. You're more likely to see 'em run out in the road than when you're actually out hunting them.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
Save up some money, get in great running shape, hire a good guide w/ dogs in Idaho or somewhere it is allowed, and you increase your chances greatly. Running w/ dogs in the snow, cold, and rough terrain is not for the average hunter nor is it easy. Just more effective.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
I like your attitude. It's been one of my dream harvests as well. If you really just want one for the wall your dream can come pretty quickly if you hook up with the right outfitter in the right state. $$$$ Taking a Cougar can mean a lot of different things to many people. For someone to go out around here and find one and shoot one .... well, I would be surprized if you found it that easy.
For me, I've been calling cougars for over 10 years and I haven't killed one yet. I can give you all the tips in the world but if you look at my harvest record .... well zero x's 100 is still zero. Good luck with finding an expert when it comes to calling cougars. It's not about the actual kill for me but about how I'll end up doing it. This is truly one of those "it's all about the journey" story. I've given up on the bow and mouth call for my first cougar. The last couple years I switched over to rifle and electric calls. Some day it will happen, in the meantime, the quest has been exilerating.
It took me 3 solid years and about 12 game cameras just to get a trail cam picture of one!
Good luck to you, hold on to your dreams and for God sakes get out in the woods. You're not going to kill one until you start applying yourself.
John

All you need to do man is just take your weapon of choice into the woods and try your hardest to call one in and make your shot! . If at first you don't succeed try try again!

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
Good luck! I've spent a bit of time in the woods, and never even seen one. (a cooger)but I'm deef and blind, and I never hastle with the spell check. I hear I need to start looking in the trees. Heck, I do that when I'm deer hunting and it does'nt work, but then I'm suppose to be looking on the ground.
A guy I hunt elk with use to say he's never seen a cougar. Last year during deer season he shot one at 15'. It can happen. I'm still waiting for my turn. Hopefully when it comes I'll be armed.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
I have only seen one cougar in my life, so I'm proabably not much help either. If I was determined to get one though, I would read anything I can find on hunting them, go out after a fresh snow and search for tracks, go out and search for track any other time I could. Then once you think you found a decent area, try calling. I have heard of a few people calling them in on a cow call while elk hunting. Then there is the predator calls too.

Folow these 5 steps:
1. Goggle harley shaw,
2. look for cougar network,
3. read id guide to cougars,
4. read the cougar field guide and bookmark as a favorite, and
5. go hunting just about anywhere.

Makes me think about somebody trying to track a cougar. Sounds like a good way to find a cougar kill and get oneself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Perhaps our young friend original poster here might think about taking a well armed hunting pal with him when he goes on his quest.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
tyler4114,
You will never learn if you dont ask question's. Some might answer you and some might not the way you would like. The best way to do is to just put your mind to something and just do it. Read and do your home work and apply it, it might take time and it might not.
I have saw three big cats and they have been in the road infront of me on the run. I have seen where they covered up the guts from a deer shot the day before when my father left his knife on them.
Keep learning and applying what you have learned and maybe some day you might get lucky!! thats my .

Here are some pictures of some from the Klamath Area I took on Sunday afternoon.
Went for a ride on the quads and spotted these guys. Watched them for 45 minutes from about 400 yards.
PM me and I'll give you a hint. We are probably heading back there on this weekend with the right equipment.

Re: i want to shoot a cugar!!!
I have seen two cougar in the wild. One sighting lasted about 2.3 seconds. The other was much shorter. Not too many of them get tracked down by humans alone as has been stated here. Have fun with it anyway, and make sure you have your GPS with you. It is easy to get turned around in some of that ground in K Falls......don't ask me how I know.....

The cats I've seen were a good distance behind locked gates and had great deer numbers. But I've been there for 16 years and seen only 2. If only we could use dogs. Good luck.

Similar story...
When I was 15, my older friend asked if I wanted to go bear hunting. I had never hunted big game before - mostly into fishing / bird hunting - but it sounded like a lot of fun.
Went to the local hardware store and bought a license, bear tag, and was given a complimentary cougar tag...of which I didn't think much.
Fast forward to the following morning....
We parked the truck, and I loaded my dad's old Model 30 30.06 with some 180 core lokts. We started hiking up a small canyon, and it was just getting light.
Within the first 100 yards of our hike, Danny (my friend) stopped in his tracks and pointed up into a tree. He saw a set of eyes peering down on us through the limbs of a pretty tall pine tree.
We were about 40 yards away from the base of a tree, and the "eyes" were about 100 feet up.
The next thing I hear is Danny saying, "cat."
He told me to put my crosshairs between its eyes and pull the trigger.
My first big-game shot resulted in a 160lb tom, stone-dead at the base of the tree.
We left the cat there and continued our hike, planning to pick it up on our way out.
To make a long story short, I ended up killing a small sow (about 180lbs) about 3-3.5 miles further up the canyon.
...and that's why I'm addicted to big-game hunting!!!
RW
