Default ODFW News: Lingcod / Canary Rockfish closure

For Immediate Release Wednesday, November 26, 2003

Lingcod and canary rockfish seasons closed through Dec. 31 Sport and commercial groundfish seasons restricted for remainder of 2003

SALEM - The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, in conjunction with federal fishery managers, has closed the following fisheries for the remainder of the year: recreational groundfish deeper than 27 fathoms, commercial trawl-caught spot prawn, and commercial groundfish shallower than 150 fathoms. The closures went into effect Friday, Nov. 21, because
the total coast-wide catch in Washington, Oregon and California for canary rockfish and lingcod exceeded allowable harvest levels.

The sport groundfish fishery will be open from the shore out to designated points defining the 27-fathom curve, according to a temporary rule adopted by ODFW. Legal waypoints can be found at http://hmsc.oregonstate.edu/odfw/regs/AN111803.pdf Retention of canary rockfish and lingcod are now prohibited in all Oregon waters. Bag limits and length restrictions for other rockfish, greenling, flounder, sole and cabezon remain unchanged from those listed in the 2003 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations. Starting Jan. 1, 2004, anglers must follow the rules listed in the 2004 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations.

The commercial spot prawn trawl fishery is closed Nov. 21 - Dec. 31 according to a temporary rule adopted by ODFW due to the potential for by-catch of the overfished species.

Commercial groundfish trawl fisheries must fish deeper than 200 fathoms through the end of the year, however, some exceptions were granted for petrale fishing areas and boats using special footrope gear. Commercial boats with fixed gear, or open access line gear, are limited to fishing deeper than 150 fathoms. The commercial groundfish rules are adopted by NOAA Fisheries and more specific information should be obtained from that agency.

So the guys in CA got their closure blocked by suing due to "insufficient notice" and they got two weeks! How much notice did we get?

Pete, the first link has a "." on the end. Remove the period and all works well.

How did they pick a nice round number like 27 fathoms. Are there a buncha reefs out there at 28-30 fathoms that they wanted to cut off fishing on?

I dunno you guys. When I was a kid, we used to catch flounder off the jetties and you'd hear once in awhile about some guy catching salmon or halibut. Now we catch lots of mediocre sea bass and not a lot more. Trend? I think so. Much as I love bottom fishing (among others of course), I'd hate to see Oregon go the way of Californica and shut down the bottom fishing everywhere. Fishing off the wrecks (processor and tug holes) will get you some nice fish if you can keep it down in that depth, but personally, I find it sad that you just can't get the fish you used too. Lings seem 'ok', but the variety and number of fish have dropped off ...I'll put up with some closures. Just my (free and rejectable) opinion...

Opinions are always welcome here Tongass. I have not lived in the state all my life so I can't make judgements of "the good old days" but based on what I've seen here in the last 6-7 years, the areas where I fish seem to have increased in numbers and species. I've been catching more Canaries the last 2 years than I caught combined the first 4 years. The ling catches have grown as well. I don't really fish in yellow eye country so I can't speak for them.

On a completely different side note, that's a great looking boat on your homepage. Did you finish her yet?

There are quite a few boat builders on the Salty Dog forum that I'm sure would love to talk shop with you.

Psssst ... Corrirod. The summer of 2003 was the 'good old days'. We'll be talking about it for years.
