Yea, what a deal. I have 4 days off, no fish to kill. I will probably go into work just to avoid the "honey do" list.

I'm gonna install cabinets in my wife's kitchen. They've been in boxes in the shop since July 1st, but I got this new boat, ya see, and I had to get it rigged and, well....

Truth is, I just walked in from the shop where I was wondering how I could get the boat back out before that gas got stale. Crabs? Herring? Weddings? (Oops, that's another thread)

I coach, so on Thanksgiving we are only going to have one practice in the early AM.

The good news is Saturday is my birthday. Rather than tackle the "honey do" list my wife is letting me go walk the river bank from dark morning to dark night. I've litterally tied up 40 drift rigs and two dozen new jigs. I don't care if I sacrifice them all to the river bottom gods...Tree on!!...or is Hook up? I'm just going fishing in overdrive for the WHOLE day. With a 16 month old son, that doesn't happen very much at all.

Who knows? I might even catch a Steelhead. I've always thought fishing beats reading about fishing... so hear goes.

Default Thanksgiving Weekend Blues

So for once, I am not going anywhere for thanksgiving. Looks like the tides are good for some night clamming, but it is likely that we will have 30+kt winds for the remainder of the week. Slim chance for getting out on big blue for some bottom fishing.

What are your plans? Friday night convoy for razors? C&R Sturgies?

So next summer I have 12 weeks off from my regular job. My wife wanted to take the
boat and make a trip up to Sitka, but I'm having a hard time trying to come up with
enough bucks to go that far ... specially considering that I'd have to give up most
of the fishing season here in Oregon to do it.

So my sweety and I compromised. My little bro' and I are going to take the boat
up to Neah Bay where my wife is going to meet us. The bro' will take the car and go
home and the wife will get on the boat. We'll spend a couple of weeks dinking around
the San Juans and maybe go up by Victoria, B.C.

So we are in the planning stages of our route. I've never made a "yacheting" trip like
this before. I just fish!! So anyway, the wife and I have
decided to spend 5 days over the holiday celebrating our 31st anniversay (which
is today!) traveling up the coast of Washington in
the car and looking at all the different ports between the mouth of the CR and Neah Bay.

I'm liking this! Not only do the "little woman" ( ) and I get to spend some quality
time together without kids or grandkids (and the cleanup the Turkey Day feast always
creates), but we get to spend two nights in a cabin right next to the bay at Westport,
WA and two nights in a lodge up by Forks ... AND check out all the cool ports/boats/other
fun stuff.

*Almost* as much fun as going fishing!

Happy Anniversary Sweetie!!

FA- If you get that far- check out Cresent lake on the road just before you get up to um.... uh oh...whats the town that the Ferry leaves WA from and goes straight across to Victoria?
Anywho- Cresent lake is beautiful, cabins there too. Not Seaport but ya can't have everything.

You could trailer that 30 foot beast of yours up I-5 to Anachortes (SP?) and save enough in Fuel to probably make Sitka! Well.. maybe not Sitka, but definately the Sunshine coast/Desolation sound Princess Falls etc. Might save a couple weeks of waiting for the weather window to, hard to say. You got a fast boat so you can hop pretty quick. It's only what- 150 miles from the CR to the corner. Always seems like it should be farther like the Oregon coast.
I've been in the San Juans and to the Islands up at the North end of Vancouver Island (Port McNeil area). If you want Wilderness you need to go farther North. If you want docks and towns and lots of Company (like hard to find a spot to Anchor or dock - but real easy to find food and fuel) stick to the San Juans/Gulf Islands. The fishing is much better up North as well (at least on the inside).
Barkley Sound is supposed to be REAL cool too. Just around the outside from Victoria (I haven't been there). Talk to Rich (Ninja) about Barkely, he's spent a LOT of time up there and has all the charts and info.
I've got some charts/chart books/Guide books for San Juans, Gulf Island and the Desolation Sound area up to Queen Charlotte Straight.
You're welcome to borrow them for the trip and/or now to start planning. Just gimmee a shout.

Oh- Congrates on the big miletone. I'm looking at 25 next year. I better start an autodeposit savings acct for this one.

Oops...back to this thread... Looks like a dry land (wet land actually) Thanksgiving weekend for me. Got a renter moving out (a day there) a Dad in poor shape (another day), Thanksgiving Dinner day, a day for a broken buried frost free faucet in the barn (I just love digging in the wet mud this time of year ) Guess the 100 days of other honey do's will have to wait.
You guys leave some Crab and Clams for seed now!

FA, sounds like a fun trip. I took my boat outside two summers ago, but went straight through. Gray's Harbor and La Push are not the easiest bars in the world and if the weather window is right, I just keep going. Roughly 18 miles across from Neah Bay is Barkely Sound. It is regarded as some of the best cruising grounds by many books such as Waggoners Cruising Guide. Many islands and never too crowded. Also, a heck of a lot cheaper than the San Juans. Uclulet and Bamfiled are your small towns for provisions. I spent almost three weeks in there and never got bored. My wife and mother drove up to spend over a week and had a blast. Whales, Ling Cod, Bears, the bus to Tofino. This is a good fallback place if you run short of time for any reason.

I have a complete duplicate chart set for Barkley Sound, Tofino, Ucluelet and Bamfield, spelling?

Take your crab and shrimp pots, Steamer Clam rakes, bottom fish gear. But, watch for red tide warnings before you attempt to eat the Oysters.

If I can remember, I'll let you know where we always threw out the anchor.

There are supplies and Fuel in Ucluelet, thats where the Charter and Commercial trollers used to moor.

Wowzers!! I'm gonna have to keep track of *this* thread! Lots of good info here
that will probably make our trip a lot more fun! Barkley sound, you say? Now *that*
sounds more like our speed! I have a little problem with crowds and for some reason
my boat is awfully attracted to them there plastic rigs! Want to know what happens when
my beer can bumps into one of 'em?? I sure don't!

Thanks again for all the offers of help and good advice ... Please, feel free to keep
'em coming!!!

If you really want the definitive word on Barkley Sound look up the retired Coastie in Newport who owns the old Grand Banks " Poke A Long " on the first dock across the Rogue Brewery. He goes straight through from Newport every summer. When I met him a few years ago he had just returned. He had one complete freezer full of shrimp he caught up there. This guy is really interesting and he had pictures in his boat of him in Look or Life magazine from an old article about the Coasties in the PNW.

The other great guide for every anchorage is a book you can get online or at West Marine by the Douglases. It is for the whole west coast of Vancouver Island, but the stuff on Barkley is very helpful. You need a good guide like this because there are lots of rocks and fog and hundreds of islands to make navigating a little confusing at first.

When you get ready to go let me know and I will give you the location of a great little ledge in a tight channel that produces easy salmon.

Reel Creel,

Tomorrow is my birthday. I'll be driving tonight, taking a nap and then start walking in dark and early. I'm still tying a few more new design jigs. I'm not sure I'll find the right water to fish them. Still, I'll have all day to run around and drown hooks. I'll update you and thanks for asking.

Well, I did it. The cabinets are in. No fishing, no hunting, but I sure gathered up a lot of Atta Boy's. I figger I'm nothing short of a hero (at least in my own mind).

Yeah, I know, it's not exactly what you expect to find on a Salty thread, but man, this really takes a lot of pressure off me.

Skein, it is very much related to Salty Dogs stuff. #1, I would say, conservitavely, that big "honey do" you just done should be worth at least 10 days of 'no questions asked Skein's going fishing' summertime days, and #2 with those glass cabinets it will be much easier to keep stock of the tequila / red wine / scotch inventory.

Nice work!

OK Reel Creel,

I drove, drove, drove...walked in...blown out. I didn't have a computer with me to check on the rivers so I made a call. Back into the car and drove, drove, drove again. Blown out...again. Hey, he was catching there on Friday. River came up over night. For my "one day" off I fished for less than 2 hours. I drove alot more than that...alot more. So I was skunked...no fish..nada. Managed it all by myself. I made the choices, planned the trip. Hey, It was soooo unspecial. My fault. Did I mention I didn't catch anything?

Oh well. Next steelhead dies. I'll probably munch on it in the car on the drive home. It won't even make it to the grill.
