Tagged tuna reward
Did anyone know that they are tagging albacore tuna now? They are giving out $500 rewards for their return as well.
Did anyone see this at the Fish Expo? It's a joint effort by NOAA fisheries, Western Boat Owners Assoc, and American Fisherman's Research group. They have only recoverd a couple so far, in fact one of them was recovered about 30 minutes after they tagged it! (they were worried that the tagged fish might go off the bite and become docile after being tagged, making them prey to sharks but that blew that theory right out of the water!)
I'm trying to locate a copy of the recoverd data from a second fish that was tagged. They had the data at the show and man was it interesting. You could see the fish's activity for about the last month. Data like how deep they were, what their body temperatures were, etc.. It was especially interesting to see how deep they were at different times of the day. It appeared to follow suit with our own observations, meaning they tend to be within the top 30-50 ft. of water column in the early mornings and go deep by early afternoon then back to the shallows in the evening.
Anyway, if anyone has a copy of those graphs or could help me find them it would be appreciated. It will not be easy though as they just recovered that fish a few weeks ago.

Man- I wondered what that crunchy thing in the last Shashimi was!
Does that data tell you what those late season fish are biting on? Now that would be worth some tax dollars!

Re: Tagged tuna reward
I'll offer up my boat as a "research vessel" for some of that advanced study.
No, honey, I can't stay home and mow the lawn today. I've got to work on my practicum."

Re: Tagged tuna reward
Hey Mel - After looking at the video it occurs to me that we could have killed and carked that fish quicker than they took to stick a cople of wires on it. Interesting stuff but are any of the taggings taking place near us?

Re: Tagged tuna reward
Thanks Orca, I've been trying to find the data but I think it's just too recent. I might try to contact that guy though and see if he has it.

Yeah Skein.
Aqua-holic gets his checked weekly just cause he thinks it's fun! He kept asking me to check it for him on the swordfish trip but I just ignored him.

I have to tell you, that reminds me of what I've seen on the X-Files - Aliens tagging humans for tracking!

Re: Tagged tuna reward
Seriously though, there is a poster in the window of Englund Marine here in Astoria about the $500 reward. I've just never been lucky enough to catch one of the little buggers!

Re: Tagged tuna reward
Also a BIG poster at the ODFW office in Newport explaining what the tags are,
what they are used for and the requirements for turning the tags in so you can
collect the reward ...
