Default Water Spout - Neat Picture

Ran across this picture of a waterspout the other day and thought it was kind of neat. I think it was off Florida, the pic was from the National Weather Service.

That's neat UG. Did you know we get waterspouts off the Oregon coast quite often. Two years ago, I saw three at one time while off tuna fishing. Wish I had my camera at the time. One of my passengers did and took some pics and he was going to send them to me but I never saw them. I think waterspouts are more abundant than tornadoes. I've seen maybe ten in my life but only one tornado.

UG,

Great pic, but just think what the pucker factor would have to be if you were out on the big blue pond and one of those shot up off your bow ???

Whoa! SD

Knowing Bradley as I do, I'd probably have to wrestle him away from the helm to keep him from getting closer for a picture  , and taking advantage of the swirling vortex of negative ions and baitfish which would likely be left in its wake  . I also guaranty you that the Dog would find a good bite going on too
If he has a pucker factor it's hard to detect. Near as I can tell--it's engaged when his grin keeps getting bigger and bigger  .
Heck when that sub breached the surface right next to us, he just smiled and waved!!!
The boy just don't rattle easy.

If you want to know what it's like to be next to one, or 2 of those, just ask TWB and/or Marty. We were all out on the tuna grounds the summer before last and we had some spouts in between our boat and theirs about a mile away. They could see (and took pics of) the spouts but we couldn't from our side of the storm.

They posted some pics so I'll do a search and see if I can locate them.

ATC - No I didnt know that, I have seen one on the Columbia near St Helens years ago, but never on the ocean.

Charlie - only if you were along to back me up buddy.

TWB / Marty - if the pics are still around it would be neat to see them.

Corrirod - Thanks for the link, I had missed that one alltogther.

Hey I just looked at this again and noticed something I didn't see the first time. What the heck are those two "things" in the water. They look like flares/smoke. There is nothing to get a perspective on in that shot though. Those aren't ships Steaming right into that dang thing are they?

So if they are flares who the heck dropped em? The airplane or chopper that is taking the pics? and why would you drop flares. "Hey Fred- lets get right down there close and drop a couple flares and see how far up they get sucked. Maybe we can follow 'em and we'll get to see the Wizard!"

I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I would guess smoke flares to gauge wind speed and velocity dropped from the airplane that took the picture.

I wondered that too Mel and thought it must be to tell the direction of the wind gusts?

It is interesting though... I would have expected the smoke to be going INWARDS towards the funnel (which is sucking stuff up), but the smoke is actually going OUTWARDS away from the funnel.

Whats up with that?

UG- Probably a proximity effect and the flares jsut aren't that close yet. There's got to be a general wind direction that moves the funnel/tornado and associated cloud. Then there's the wind right at/in the funnel. Probably the question that plane is trying to answer.

Just hard to judge how close/far those flares are from the funnel (or how big that is) with nothing of known size to judge perspective.

Guess you'll just have to get real close to one and find out where the wind really does change direction/speed.
Make sure you take pictures for us! Better transmit real time for us though just in case!

Sorry everyone for the late reply, I haven't looked at the forum for a while. I found the pictures that Rod is talking about and have them reloaded.

Ocean Blue remembered it being September 7, 2002.
We were off Depoe Bay about 40 miles. There were several of these spouts that day. This picture is looking back towards Depoe.

This first picture is at a normal distance of about 2 miles away.

The second picture is the same as the first, only enlarged so you can get a good close up look at it. Look at the amount of water it's pulling up into the air!

Oh, and one other thing.......we were not throwing any flares out around it!!!!

THis coming year I hope to take some better pics of the waterspouts we see out there. Like I said, one year we had up to three at a time we could see and once we had a long snaking type that lasted for almost an hour! It was awesome.

Miss B.

In the original post, Andy Coho asked, "did it make you a little nervous seeing those funnel clouds?"

My reply was "as you can see by the boat wake, we were not getting any closer...!!!"

ATC, it's kind of strange, I chartered for many years off of the Columbia mouth, and this was my first time to see funnels from storm clouds?

I just moved here from Georgia, we saw these pretty regularly. But I also have fished offshore here in the 70's a bunch - from the CR - but never did see one then.
