Hookup or Fish On?
I was always taught that when fishing for Tuna and other big game fish, it was improper to use the phrase "Fish On".
In fact I was yelled at more often than not for using "Hook UP".
Whats the proper term?

I believe the proper term is:
"Hey Tom we got one on a hand line, oops- double!..... Yeeeeeeehhhaaaa there's another one on a long rod.... gotta go!"
Now - lets talk about numbers and "hands"! :grin:

Funny subject....we usually say "hookup." But thousands of other words have been uttered.

That seems to be the most used phrase on my boat.

In the Atlanic people usually yell "Fish on!" just to alert people that you might be coming down or ripped down the rail at any moment.
Still at the end of the day, the most beautiful words that were ever heard on a Tuna trip were "we've got COLOR!". That meant you needed to be ready with the gaff...gaffs...immediately.

Usually don't get much more than FISH!!!!!!!!!!!! out before I start jumping over sleeping passengers. If they don't wake up by the double or triple strike or so the cussing starts in earnest.
I think the whole confusion over fish-on! and hookup! comes from the marlin crowd. You have to feed a striking billfish. When you finally set the hook and get a bent rod you yell 'hook up'.
We just yell fish-on because the strike is a bent rod almost every time.

followed by a mad scramble and chaos cause no one seems to remember their assigned roles at that exact moment! We have always used fish-on. It has a sorta magic sound about it...can wake the dead and stire the hearts of the most jaded fisherman. Thumbs down to anyone who chastised you for doing the natureal thing!

WP, I agree, we use "Fish ON", although we sometimes use "Hook Up" and in the case of the outriggers we holler "Break Away" and it all adds up to lots of adrenalin and rapid pulse. The ultimate......

While I have yet to chase tuna, the most common thing I yell in my boat is "GET IT!". When my wife is fishing with me, she just starts yelling my name. At home, when she yells my name, I have actually spun around to check for a rod bent down to the water and quickly remembered that I am back on dry land and she is yelling at me for some other reason. (Only in her mind does she have a good reason to be yelling...) :grin:

I have different set of responses depending on the situation.
When mooching for chinook, lings, and 'but's, I try to be a mello fellow. I almost always hold my rod (love that bite), but you HAVE TO practice self restraint.
If someone whose rod is in the holder gets a bite, I'll holler "Lookie-Lookie-Lookie" to get their attention, then encourage them to see how many times they can say "Lookie" before they feel they have to set the hook. It's fun, and can go on for 30 seconds or more with a persnikity 'nook or ling.
You don't play "lookie" with silver--I just yell "THERE HE IS!!!" or "FISH ON!!!!!!!!!!!

Tom, "hook-up" sounds so dirty. :blush: I like it!!!!  On my boat it is always FISH ON!!!!!!  Well almost always. Sometimes I just stare at my Dad's bent fishing rod and then say, "Hey, you gonna name that fish"?

The term used in the charter fleet is "HOOK UP!!" yelled at the top of your lungs.  That's so the guy on the wheel can hear and respond. Fish on is so whimpy and we reserve that for salmon fishing.

On board the Sea Jypzee it's usually FISH yelled at the top of your lungs, or FISH ON...often closely followed by DOUBLE, and then shortly later, TRIPLE, and once in a while get the pleasure of yelling out "We've got a QUAD!!!!"
I'll never forget the sight of Crambone when he got his first Albacore on a Stand up rod. I can't say exactly what he said in a public forum like this, but he was rather excited.

Yup, its HOOK UP when a jig goes off and FISH ON when you drive the hook home on live bait or a cast jig . . . at least that's how I was brought up . . .

Well Miss B Haven that was my 1st post. :blush:
As for a true fish story, there was one day last summer when I went along for a ride on a boat named "Puffin" :shocked: We were catching these silver fish called cohos :smile: and 9 outa 10 all had this extra fin called an adipose :whazzup: So we moved north so we were more in line with the Newport lighthouse and caught some adiposeless fish that we could put "in the boat"  Of course the skipper Puffin had to catch the biggest silver fish [img]graemlins/applause.gif[/img]
True story - Summer 2003 - I'd have to check my tag for the day.
Maybe chase some Tuna this year--that's a whole nother story [img]graemlins/idea.gif[/img]
Gotta go back to work....don't have a reel job yet..

Well guys it all depends on is what is my position to the POLE in question, if I have it in my hand, anything is OK, if there are people in the way then it comes out more like "man I could use a beer" or "anyone know what time it is" any thing to improve your position to the POLE.
Just remember don't leave fish to catch fish....

Buddy of mine says "set it and forget it" if he's holding the rod. On the troll it's either HOOK UP!! or FISH ON!! Have heard some gutteral noises come out that have no idea how to spell but favorite to date is "there is a god".

I kinda like Pilar's FISH!!!! although I've also heard him scream HANDLINE!!!.
Funny how you guys talk about beating each other to the pole. By TUNA! number 17 on the Swordfish Trip we were being really polite and offering the pole to each other.
