Default Teasers for Albies

I've seen some discussion here regarding teasers. I typically run a squid daisy chain on one side, and a fish (Ballhyoo) daisy chain on the other (I have a ton of TuffHoo and Calcutta plastic ballyhoo). I've seen some posts on here for the Strip Teaser - I really would like to try one, but at $250 a pop!!! Anyone on here ever have any difinitive results with a teaser on Albies - or salmon for that matter. Salmon - I would be worried about the silvers cutting through a strip teaser. Thoughts?

Key West,

The 2003 Melton Catalogue sells a Stripteaser,6 arm dredge with 69 fish on it for $229. The Mega Strip Teaser has an 8 arm dredge with 87 fish on it.

-BUT-

Interestingly they also sell a "small 3-strip cone with 9 fish" for $19 and a "large 3-strip cone with 15 fish" for $30. Certainly not a complete answer, but interesting.

I imagine a skipper like Popeye or any of the creative guys on IFish could probably snag one of the cheaper versions and figure out how to manufacture them for the rest of the IFish Fleet...hint...hint.

Dean, I usually run a squid teaser early in the season. Think it's daisey chained with six clear/white squid with the trailer having a single hook. It's usually gets hit once or twice.

We ran various combinations of teasers some with clones of dif. sizes and colors , Keta ran some large billfish teasers from time to time. We also ran several large ex-sized clones that got hit on occasion. It was hard to keep up with Lee and Bernie, it must have been a Fox news plot.

WE did not run any strip teasers though, maybe Santa will bring me one this year if I'm good.

If Ketas looking maybe he will pipe in.

Tuna Tom- Popeye made a post a while back about the strip teasers. I think he's got the plastic shop working OT on 'em right now!
I haven't got into the teasers yet. DId try a splasher that I liked but didn't get hit. Minaki oicked up one on it though.

Seems that the traditonal methods were putting more ALbis in the boat than we could deal with last year during the peak season. Front and back end of the year would be a nice time to experiment.

Key West, I've ben using a cheap homemade teaser that Chum King showed me at a TA meeting last winter. Use 12 ft of 200# mono and evenly space (5) one foot droppers of the same leader. Crimp them to the main line with copper crimps. Make the dropper stick out towards the boat. Slide on a 4.5" salmon green and whatever (my favorite is the one called 'sardine') hootchie and tie a single overhand knot in the end of each dropper. Finish the rig with a perfect loop on the boat end and a 250# sanpo snap swivel on the lure end.

You end up with a chain of 5 squid lures that are being chased by the terminal lure.

Costs about $10 and 15 minutes to make and was pretty deadly on a long handline almost every day last summer we ran it. The chaser lures of choice were a green and yellow 6" zukers with a stainless barbless double hook or the watermelon cedar plug with the single hook.

I also put a yozuri splasher on the end of the teaser chain with a lure behind it and that worked too for bringing the fish to the boat and the lure spread.

Pilar,
Do you use barbless hooks exclusivly for albies? I have been and miss a few at break away from the outriggers when they get the slack.

Misty Dawn- there's times when the Albis just seem to bite lite and get off just like Salmon. I've lost as many on handlines as poles and as far as the poles go probably as many on the straight poles as the clipped "rigger" poles. Granted, my "riggers" aren't 20 feet so the slack period isn't as long.
Those drive by's seem to come in streaks and I believe it's the way they are taking the lure.

One day we lost 6 in a row off the bat. I was trying to figure out what I was doing wrong/different. We put the next two in the boat, lost two more and then got down to business and to filled the holds. I think we probably only lost 2 more fish (out of 30 or so) the entire day. I didn't change anything, the fish did.
Lip hooking a bullet at 7 knots just doesn't seem to work. Oh- have you ever had one "get away" and pulled up a 1/2 of jaw? Not much meat on those.
I really don't think the barbless matter in this case (they do matter if you get one in a hand or foot though). If they swallow that hook far enough it will stay whether barbless, barbed, single or double.

Mel,

Sorry to have such a one track mind, but the reason I would put out a teaser/teasers is for Mr. Big. I don't believe it hurts the Albacore fishing but does up the curiousity of all those larger critters swimming under your prop boil that never come up to look. A teaser can bring those guys up and allow them a closer look at your other baits  . It's not like everytime you put a teaser out you are going to see some fin blow by that is definitely bigger that an Albacore, but hey...everytime you do, you appreciate that it is always worth the effort.

Thanks! again for the tuna from the last meeting.

Hey Tom- one track minds can be a good thing when you're really on a mission!
The Thread was titled "Teasers for Albies" though. I'm in agreement 100% when I'm trying to figure out how to get a Blu to the boat. If course I have zero experiance with Blu's so what does that count?
Anywho... We've got a couple months (and some snow to melt it appears) to continue this discussion and figure that out right?

I didn't run any this year, but in past years I have used chain as a teaser, especially in front of diving plugs. They keep the plug from jumping out of the water and smoke like crazy. About a foot of chain works pretty well. I have seen albies actually hit the chain. So I crimped a hook on the chain and landed one with it.

A big strip teaser dredge would be more trouble than it's worth in my opinion. Loads of tangles, and where do you put it when you are fighting fish?

I also run hoochies on the leader in front of feathers. A split shot will hold em in place.

Ok - that does it. I'm going home tonight and drink a 6 pack of bud and make the ultimate big fish teaser rig. You should se the bubble/smoke from just one can. A 6 pack should bring up Moby Dick! Muhahahahahahah- Uuuurrrpp!

Wow, lots of good info. The teasers I have used I run off the inside eye of the outrigger. When I get a fish on, I reel the teaser up and let it dangle (I have teaser reels on the riggers) so it's out of the way for the most part. Sounds like a lot of folks use them. But no experience in the "Strip Teaser"? The fishing mags are really touting them.

An interesting note, last month's Saltwater Sportsman had a tip to use old CD's as a teaser -drill a hole in opposite ends, tie them together using mono and swivels, and you have a teaser as the CD's spin in the water and attact fish. Now if I could just get the "marlin attractor" CD - that would be a hit! Seriously though - might be another option!

Team Pilsbury ran daisy chains this year and they took at least one or more fish every trip. We used the same pattern as Pilar, multiple hoochies strung on 200 lb mono only the last one carrying a hook. Occasionally we set out two and other times only one. I think the whole idea of teasers and/or daisy chains is good because they do work.

Threesmuch has a point about tangles. All in all that really wasn't a major problem with the rigs we fished but anything much wider might be.

The real mystery is - how can we get them to bite at the end of the season? What combination of things will provoke strikes then?

I think albacore like the Beach Boys and the Doors

Something like this would be easy to build and I will have some next year.

Last season on Kamloops boat we ran birds, daisy chains and splashers. All caught fish.

Lee,

I saw those dang things a while ago.
Let me know if you get one done, I'm just the Idiot that would fall for something like that
hook line and sinker. They want about $150.00 for the unit and lanyard.
Proly take about 10 minutes and I'd have it the prop.

I have some rough cut hardwood 2x4's that I'm trying to get planed down. I also have some reflective tape. Total cost should be around $10.00. I plan on making several of them. Does anyone of a place I can store them next season?

I ordered four 9-fish and one 15 fish strip teaser as well. I have a spreader bar for it to go on, total cost about $115 instead of the $250 if bought as a unit. So, I'm looking forward to trying it - any tuna out there?

Cool - strip teaser's arrived today. I've got a "tuna project" - putting together the teaser dredge for next year!

I also stripped down all my baits and started replacing the leaders.

I know, I'm sick.

KeyWest...I got my 4 arm dredge setup last week. After studying the makeup and associated cost for parts and labor, I decided to just go back to the puter and order another one.
The 4 arm dredge, complete, is $89.95. I'll be running one on each side, offa rigger poles.
BTW....I've noticed that most of the Billfish Tourneys that I have been watchin' lately, have been runnin' them!

I have a 5 point straight arm I was going to run, single arm. I was thinking of attaching a 16oz trolling bar ahead of it to get it underwater. I have 4- 9 fish ribbons, and 1 - 15 fish ribbon. They appear to be the same length, just higher density of fish on the 15 ribbon. The last 2 years in the SE they were all the rage - so... I also wanted to try them with salmon, but from the looks of them, I'm afraid the silvers will tear them apart - bummer.

Keep me posted on how you think they work - I will do the same!
