Default loose logs at sea

kcby is reporting that a barge lost 2000 logs tied in bundles of 5 about 100 miles southwest of tillamook head. to be extra careful at the beachs and jettys. might not be too good if your were underway and got into them.

Hey RB, Thank you for the warning !!!

Do you know who owns a log once it is loose? My question is actually two-fold - 1. Are the logs up for grabs, if someone could grab them, i.e., salvage? - 2. If my boat is damaged by one of the loose logs, is the log owner or hauling co. liable for damages?

TailorsViewpoint have you got any opinions?

This same thing happened a few years back and, if I recall correctly, the logs remained the property of the logging company. In fact, they did retrieval of the logs once they washed on shore.

Just curious... what do you see when you click on the link to the windows executable (the URL that points to CTOYMD15.EXE)?

I'm not brave enough to execute an arbitrary windows executable file. A quick hex dump shows comments from some Paul Mace guy... looks like he makes multi-media software... ok, I'll stop this and finish working so I can go fishing this weekend.

Rusty, it's a safe file. It launches this time-lapse image showing when and where the duckies (and other plastic toys) were first lost overboard, then traces their path all over the ocean, over the years. It's quite interesting.

Somewhat related.... a while back on a Discovery show they talked about the tens of thousands of ship containers (you know, the ones that go on a semi truck) that have been washed overboard, many of which are floating around the high seas. Boat sinkings are often attributed to these. On the same show they talked about certain lost cargo that has been traced around the world, most notably a huge shipment of yellow rubber duckies made in China. A weather expert at NOAA has been tracking these duckies since the incident, splitting up into "herds" that show how the ocean currents move. Some have even gone through the Bering sea, across the Arctic, and over to the Atlantic.

edit: here's a good site. Check out the 'alerts'

go to this page http://www.beachcombers.org/images/images.htm

and click on "north pacific toy spill" to see where the duckies have gone:

and a story about the rubber duckies: web page
