Oh Man! What gorgeous pics. The next the last one in the last set where the hen is sleeping and the greenhead is preening is one of the best waterfowl pics I've ever seen, and I've seen plenty in my 54 years.
You know what you should do? Frame some of those and donate them to a DU event. You name what they are worth for tax purposes and deduct that price on your taxes. Very legal and a very good way to help raise money for DU while helping to offset some of your photo expenses. Thanks, Bill

hmmm Still not convinced.
Not every duck is exactly the same. Some mallard hens can get darker/lighter then normal, and the same goes for black ducks.
Really the only thing that makes this black look lighter is the feather tips and how much lighter color they have on them.
Remember, the pic that Joe took is a picture of a Hen, the pic that Adam posted was of 2 Drakes.

I'm not saying anyone is wrong, and I'm not trying to argue.
Just saying what I see.

It looks Pretty much all Black duck to me.
If anything it might have a 10th of mallard in it with that white strip on the back of her speculum, but all the feathers and bill tell it all.

I will agree to disagree.

I'm 99% certain that if those pictures are taken at a different angle (meaning how the light is hitting her) or better yet even a 1/2 hour later in the day this conversation isn't happening. Ducks do very and no two are exactly alike but there are traits that never vary. Not an expert.... But I would wager pretty big money on it.

I can take NO credit for any of the Black Duck pictures. I was not trying to mislead I just was trying to compare birds and using them as a reference. I should have given photo credit but to be honest I have NO idea who took these shots. I have seen Blacks only 3 times in my life and none of them while I had a good camera and NONE while hunting. It's one that I have on my to get list for sure...

That was one of the reasons I wanted to see if we could get different (later in the day) picture of this bird becasue I do think in different light that bill would look more orangish.

No two hen mallard bills look alike and it could also have to do with hormone levels.

Instead of shooting it with your camera, why don't you do an "in the hand identification". Take a shotgun and end the discussion. It's hard to believe that this would just be photographed and not shot given that it might be a black.

That is, if it's huntable.

The splotchy black on the bill has me thinking Mallard. Not clean yellow with a black nail like a black duck has.

Just did a quick Google...

"To distinguish between a drake and hen Black Duck, you need to look at the bill. The drake Black Duck has a yellow to greenish yellow bill with no blotches, while the hen Black Duck has a greenish olive bill with blotches."

From Delta Waterfowl.

Earlier you stated that the bill was yellow. If it's a hen black duck, the bill shouldn't be yellow.

A dead bird would render this discussion moot.
