Default New hunter confused with regs

I was looking through book last night. I am planning to get my fishing tags and license. I also need to get a hunting license and tags.

This will be my first year hunting. I live in scappoose and plan to hunt the Scappoose or Saddle Mountain areas.

Do I just get a tag for that area? The coast area is huge. Are there specific tags for Scappoose and Saddle Moutain.

I am planning deer and elk.

I thought the fishing regs were confusing. I am sure I will get it figured out.

Thanks

First things first, save an electronic copy of the fishing, hunting and bird regs PDF's to your desktop for easy access. Secondly you have two options for elk you can buy a general tag and hunt the general seasons in those areas or put in for a controlled tag. Deer on the westside is pretty much a general tag unless your interested in a controlled doe tag or special season buck tag. Third rifle hunting or bow hunting will change what options you have available. Oregon uses a preference point system for controlled hunts. If you put in for a tag and are unsucesfull you gain a point. The more points you have the higher your odds are of drawing a tag. Different units require different points some units require no points at all.

if this is your first year hunting before you go can you please take a hunter safety course.. i know if you're older than 18 you don't have to take but for your safety and the safety of other hunters and non hunters please take the time to take the course.

I plan to take the course. I have taken different firearm safety courses. I grew up with my mom being a cop and shot with the department often.

I will be buying my first rifle soon.

Thanks for all the help.

You have to take a hunter safety course if you were born after Jan 1 1970. So any first time hunter 39 and younger needs to have the course in order to purchase a license. And everyone would very strongly recommend the course no matter what the age a first time hunter is.

I just went through the regs and you're right it isn't true. I will still likely take the class.

where did 1970 come from?

I just checked a site that lists hunter ed requirements for all states and Canada and not one uses 1970 as its grandfathering date for licensing
