On Sunday, I dropped pots at 9:30 and tuned the radio to the weather. The report was 4 foot wind waves and 7 foot seas. And, this forecast was an hour old. I was bummed but called the Coast Guard for a bar report and was told the ocean was 1 & 3. Go figure!
Jumped the bar and found myself in a beautiful and flat sea. Motored toward Seal Rock at about 20 mph on plane. Saw a total of 5 boats including one puker. Called Seasquid on 78 and got a reply but couldn’t raise him again. I figure he was not at Seal Rock.
My buddy and I bobbed around for a couple hours without much luck. Finally, I started puttering around and saw a big ball of fish go under us. We dropped down and were nailed. In the next twenty minutes, we had our twenty and they were all nice, big black bass. We let a 22 inch ling go back down that had a mouth full of baby lings. Once we found the fish, we could not get the lines down more than twenty feet before being bit. It was bottom fishing at its finest. And, we had the ocean to ourselves.
Back in the bay, we pulled our three pots and had not a single female in any of the pots. We threw back at least ten males that were 1/16 inch too small. We ended up with 8 nice big hard ones.
Having been limited this summer due to boat motor problems, I REALLY enjoyed my day on the briny. The boat ran perfect, too.
Life is good.
