Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
I have a line on a 1986 23' Olympic Hardtop OB, the hull looks seaworthy, but there is some work invovled with the rest. I'm looking for opinions on how seaworthy this design is. It looks good to me, what do you have to say??

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
I own a 1986 Olympic 19' hard top. My Grandfather gave it to me. He had taken it into the ocean numerous times out of Depo Bay. The main reason he purchased it was due to its sea worthyness, and thich hull design. Mine has a outboard 115 OMC Sea Drive on it with a 20 horse Johnson kicker. I have had it in some rough conditions myself (on the Columbia) and I was impressed with it's handling. Hope this helps you. If you have any further questions post here or send me an email.

I think this company went out of business a couple of years ago.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Olympic was owned by Skagit marine and they went out of business two years ago. THey made Orca as well.
I have a 22' Hardtop with an alaska bulkhead, 225 Sea drive. As most who know me know, I blew the powerhead on the Sea Drive and I am saving my pennies for a honda four stroke.
I love mine, here are some pros and cons.
Pros:
Beefy hull
Deep Vee
Fast in rough seas
Warm
Dry
Tons of fishing room
High Freeboard
Good construction (nothing cheap, everything is solid)
Cons:
NOT self bailing
Driver positioning is tight to wheel (I am a big guy and I don't fit that great, can't stand up and drive in rough seas)
Side passenger seating is awkward (seats a bunch of people, but they slide around in rough seas)
Bracket construction means the outboard is way back, and you have to learn to fish around it.
Gas HOG with a normal two stroker
They made some smaller models which were not stand up hard tops. That sounds like Sturgeon Kings, mine is a bigger boat, even though it is only a couple feet longer. Mine wouldn't have planed with 115 horsepower.
I have the original sticker from this boat in 1988, $34K. I bought it for $14K which would have been great if I had gotten the 4 or 5 years I wanted out of the main engine. Unfortunately it blew up in just over a year. As it stands I will be putting on a 225 hp Honda when I get the cash together and keeping the boat for another 10 or more years.

Kurtis, You mean you can't open the hatch above your head and standup and drive?

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
streetwalker, ive fished alot out of a 23 footer like you are looking at, it was self bailing and had an omc seadrive on it and it had an 88 gallon fuel tank, very good boat in rough water.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Boater, thanks for the info, I figured it had a bigger tank than they told me, they guessed 50 & given the size & the fact that its an outboard I thought it would be bigger.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
If I had a death wish. The hatch is OK for nighttime vis at low speed (harbors and such) but otherwise I never use it.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Threemuch, your pics did not come thru, The 240 OMC seadrive is shot on this one, it will take a new motor. The hull feels like its very thick. This boat does have two scuppers at the back, so the back Cockpit area is self draining. BTW I Dont know the fuel Capacity, Nor does the owner, it was her husbands & he is passed. If anyone who knows where to find the specs for the 1986 models it would be very helpful. I expect to hear today if my offer was accepted & if the survey comes out OK, its a done deal.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
My fuel cap on my 19' is 36 gallons.
Threemuch, you are correct about the short hardtop.... not able to stand up under it.
I always thought that my 115 was a little under powered for the 19' Olympic. It would get up on plane.... just took a while.
I too have a bad powerhead on my 115 OMC Sea Drive.... repair places want $3000.00 to rebuild mine or replace powerhead with a rebuilt. Seens how I have been out of work and on Unemployment for over a year, $3000.00 is out of the question. ~SK~

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Threemuch, actually I'm not totally sure what size the seadrive unit is on this. I havn't paid to much attention to it since I can visibly see that the lower unit is bad (holes in it) I dont know if the engine runs or not & did not plan to keep it. If the powerhead is the same would you be intersested?? I ask becuase if my offer is accepted I was going to have the whole thing removed before I take it, & if it is of use to someone here I'll have them leave it on, cuase its actually going to be an expense to have it removed.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Yeah, my 3L sea drive was like 5-6K to rebuild or replace powerhead. No way I dump that kind of money into a 15 year old 2 stroke gas hog. I will be mounting a new or near new OB with a bracket this spring, hopefully.
Good luck with the job search SK. I feel really bad for anyone looking for work in this economy. When I get my boat up and running, you are at the top of the list for crew. I have a lot of crewing Karma to make up for.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Streetwalker, mine is already off the boat. If the lower unit is that bad, the powerhead is probably shot too, or near shot. Thanks for the offer.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Nor Riv
No, I dont even know if it runs seems way to big, but I will be getting rid of it & doing a complete repower, & intend to replace all the electrical, as well as go through all the other systems, I just want to know every system well for eventual tuna missions.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Congrats Steetwalker Robert could be great source of help and information. But don't tell him I said so. I bet he is still bragging about that Tillamook limit.
If you need Tuna crew, let me know. I still haven't done that. I did the Halibut thing, so I could help with that, although I am sure there are others who are a lot more experienced than me.

He has allready volunteered, & I'd be remiss not to tap some of what he learned doing his. We need to get the 3 of us out there when this is complete!

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Streetwalker-
I've been eyeing the 26' Wellcraft that has been parked right behind your new boat. Nice ride!
Did you find out why someone had mounted a 40hp outboard on the back as well? Seamed like a rather large trolling motor.
Goodluck with the new toy!

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Who me...brag?
I'd sleep in that boat if he'd let me, but he's got the insides tore out already. It's gonna be a fun project. Sure we'll get a lot of (bench) fishing done before it even hits the water.
Is it cheating if I'm in love with someone elses boat?

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
Streetwalker & Threemuch,
I have a 21' Wellcraft Coastal that originally had a 225 Sea Drive. I repowered two years ago with a 225 Yamaha from North River. They had Almar build be a alumunum offshore bracket that covered the Sea Drive hole in the transom and seems to work very well. They powder coated the bracket it it looks good on the boat. Talk to Dave in the Sales department, or send me an e mail for more information. I sold the old motor to a outboard motor parts yard off Hwy 205 on Glison, I think. If you wanted to rebuild your existing motor this may be a place for parts. My 89 motor was in good running shape.
I hope this helps.

Re: Looking for opinions on Olympic designs pics
just a note on the olympic boat line. the same out fit that makes the c-dory in kent washington is also making the orca and the olymipc now . they have the orca on their web site but not the oly. i saw one at the boat show in seattle last year. It was a really nice boat for the price. http://www.c-dory.com/ try this site for info on when they are going to produce more oly's.
