Default Looking for good marine surveyor

I've got my eyes on one & the hull looks very sea worthy. There are a few other issues with this boat, but if the hull is sound then I'm interested, does anyone have a good reference?

The trade associations have geographical member listings.

http://www.acms-usa.com/directory.html

edit / p.s.: There is a designation called "accredited marine surveyor" that carries with it a certain level of professional integrity & experience. Also, there are specific designations for various specialties, such as engine/mechanical (I can't remember all of them). The point is, it may be worthwhile to get a surveyor who specializes in the type of boat, or the particular concerns that you have.

One word of advice....Make sure the surveyor lays out what he is going to do EXACTLY before you give them the go ahead. Ask to see sample surveys of other vessels they have done. Even accredited surveyors can vary widely.

Alot depends on what they vessel is, and the actual location.

I just had a boat surveyed this last year, and I basically threw away $450. Luckily the boat turned out good, but the survey was useless for anything except the insurance policy.

Mark Mc makes a great point. Engine/mechanical is usually surveyed seperate, and by a specialist. Depending on the power, you want someone who is VERY familiar with the power source to review it.

i.e.: The local mechanic/body shop can tell you about the body, and basic mechanics of your truck, but do you want his opinion on the turbo diesel power?

Fortunataly or unfortunately depending on how you look at it, all I am concerned about is the hull structure, the rest can be dealt with. I like this design enough that if the hull is sound, I'm good with the rest. It is an outboard setup.

Made a contingent offer today on a 1986 Olyimpic 23' pilot house model. Very large back deck. its an outboard setup with an offshore bracket, both motors are shot, the back deck needs partial replacement. If the hull checks out OK, Ive got a new project.
