That is a nice Chessie. Good luck in finding a mate for him. Hopefully you'll post a pup or two in the classifieds...I'd take one.

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
Be sure the female has all of her health clearances, hips, eyes, doggy vd,and also look at her temperment, that way you will produce a good litter that you should be able to find homes for my

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
Not to rain on your parade, but the owner of the female usually picks who she is bred to. They should look at heath clearances and temperment at the very least. Some will look for accomplishments like hunt test titles or show titles and confirmation.
I've got a 3 1/2 month old chessie pup. He's out of a male that is a 5 time Master National qualifier and is a show champ, the mom has a senior hunter title and a pass toward her master hunter. All health clecks, micro chipped, all that stuff. We're having fun with the puppy stuff, but my poor old 12 year old chessie just looks at me like "Are you kidding me?". To me the preformance titles are important, I will play that game with the new pup, the old guy is a master hunter.
edit: Oh yeah, nice looking dog, looks pretty happy!

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
James is correct. If your male has some credentials, the female owners will be seeking you out, not the other way around. Plenty of proven males out there so trying to introduce yours to the gene pool might not work. You need to ask yourself, what does my dog have to offer?
I don't know your dog so I'm shooting blind here. Understand that producing great pups starts with breeding the best to the best and hoping for a good mix. Your dog may be one of the best but a photo says nothing no matter how pleasing to the eye he may be.

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
Hip dysplasia runs high in chessies. Please make sure and get the hips and elbows checked out before you breed this dog. Just my two cents, but most GOOD dogs should be neutered....

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
Like others have said:
He would need hips and eyes certified before thinking about breeding. $$$$$$
Then my experience has bean that the owner of the male gets one pup out of the litter and the rest is the females, or the females owner may pay a stud fee.
Your dog looks good, but not very block headed, small looking feet, and weak in the front end. Just my opinion though. I like them big, muscular and blockheaded. Your dog looks to be within the weight standard for the breed though. I like them a bit bigger, maybe 90 to 110 lbs.
Why do you want to breed him?
I see the little pic with the medals. Is this the same dog?

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
thank you everyone. he is smaller then the average chessie. his dad was a stud out of montana with high hunting skills and was 130 pounds, his mom was small but i liked that.both are great hunters. moose is too i havent ran him in any hunting trails but does great out in the field. he is sound all the way through and has a great personailty. he is 70 pounds but is a pure block of muscle. i keep him lean cause i run him in dockdogs. and yes that is him will the medals. im breeding him cause my parents and brothers both want puppies out of him along with alot of others have been asking. i want to get him ready for this year cause at events i have at least two people asking me to breed him to there dog every time. i would also like to keep a pup just not right now cause he is still doing great and hasnt slowed down at all, is there a age that i wont be able to breed him anymore?
heres some more pics

stud photo
and for refrence to size im 6'4'' 250

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
If you have female owners asking, and everybody has actual health clearances (hips and eyes at a miniumum, google Team Chesapeake for other current chessie health issues) go for it. Don't wait too long, or have sperm frozen right now. Chessies are prone to rapidly decreased sperm counts before the age of 10. Seven year old sterile chessies are not uncommon. You vet can check the count pretty quickly, and trust me, it's something that you want to pay the vet for! As Ron White says, "he likes me enough already"!

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
I agree with James. Breed the dog soon and/or take frozen while the dog is in it's prime...don't wait much longer 5-6yrs old generallyspeaking is a prime age.

Nice but can your dog jump ?
Bucky
ps. Hi Moose, nice orange vest and I like the iron!
Talk to Julie and Caddis in Spokane. Caddis won the Iron dog Nationals last year, she hunts and she's pretty cute too!
Want me to set you two up for a play day?

Re: chesapeake bay retriever
I'm with the other guys. If you realy want a pup off him do it sooner than later. I missed an opertunity with a great chessie 15 years ago and I still regret it to this day. We bred him every year, and every time we sold our one pick of the litter cause "theres always next year". Well next year he couldnt get the job done and right there I lost the best chessie bloodline I ever knew. I'll probably spend the rest of my life trying to get a dog like that again. I dont suspect it will ever happen. Todays chessie breeders seem to have a different eye and different goal than they did 20 years ago.
