Crab Butter?!?
A couple of weeks ago I was having some crabs cooked at Netarts. When the dock hand pulled the crabs out of the cooker, he asked if we wanted some crab butter before he dumbed the crabs into the ice-water.
My Dad and I exchanged a curious look and gave him the same. The Dock hand picked up the biggest Dungie and asked, "You mind?"
I said, go ahead...
He then turned the crab upside down and carefully backed the crab. He laid the body of the crab down, still holding the crab back filled with a soup-of-such he tipped it to his lips and drank it till it was dry, then proclaimed, "Now that is some damn good Crab Butter!" Still with bits of crab guts/brain clinging to his mustache.
He prompted us to try, and we did, I have to admit it wasn't tooooo bad, kind of like...eeerrr...egg flour soup....aaahhh....maybe....
So have I been missing out on a long tradition of drinking fresh Crab Butter after every Dungie cook fest??

Re: Crab Butter?!?
Don't knock it till you try it!
I actually saw that guy on TV when they had their crab contest this summer and he did the same thing and went thru each body part to discuss its edible qualities. I personally only like the butter and the "lobster". The "lobster" of the crab is that piece of reddish meat that is right on top if you open the crab right side up. Mmmmmmmmmmm........
O.k., that's it, I'm going crabbing this weekend!

Re: Crab Butter?!?
Oh ya, crab butter gooooooood! Also, if you can find it, they have a small star shaped heart, that should be extracted and dipped in the butter for a real treat!

Re: Crab Butter?!?
I always save the butter to use in my seafood chowder as the base. I don't think I'm going to be drinking it straight any time soon.

I don't bother rinsing a bit of it off but I don't slurp it. I could never "Suck Heads" when eating crawdads either.

Re: Crab Butter?!?
I have to add my cooking at wheeler a couple of years ago. the kid got done cooking and gave me the crabs to clean. there are always people around down for the day to look at the beach and see what peole are doing. this guy comes up to me and asks if he can drink some of my crab butter! oh, ok, I guess, whats that? he then shows me and drinks it in front of a large crowd of people. he hands it to me! I know how long the cooking water sits in those cooking pots. ug, no way, but I did try it later when I was cooking at home, it was good.

Re: Crab Butter?!?
If you have any issues with cholesterol take a pass on all this "butter", because this is the pure stuff, the real McCoy, 1000 calorie per hit type cholesterol.

Re: Crab Butter?!?
I occasionally hit the crab butter, and the meat up in the corners of the shell, oh yeah, and the hearts. Everything is edible, except the shell, gills and stomach.
It's good stuff. I eat all of it in a lobster, no question.

Re: Crab Butter?!?
The butter is melted fat, not water from the cooker.....
