Mel / Keta -- OMC
Thanks, you were right on the money about heat exchanger. Tank w/ radiator cap is reservoir.. Good idea, Mel, about getting RV anti freeze in it.
 BINGO --before I read your responses today I stopped in Everett at an OMC dealer, (BAYSIDE) and a nice guy showed me a new 3 liter in the show room and pointed out the features you two just explained. A +
Mechanics at Olympic Boat Sales didn't have a clue about OMC's --Yup, they sold that boat... Sure wouldn't go there for service.
I've only had the boat 9 months, but I'll sure check the pencil zincs.. This boat although an '89' onlu has 187 hrs on engine (lots of barn time w/ previous owners)..
At Dagmars (storage) you run up the Snohomish R., so flushing shouldn't be a biggie.
Many thanks, Ifish came through again.

I have a truck with a knuckle boom on it Mel.
I'm not much for operating the boom.
Hope you have your insurance paid up current.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
Hey Mel do you work on the boat at home or are you traveling to Warrenton? 1500lbs sounds like a job for Metro Machinery, you know , the guys who moved the Spruce Goose and re-assembled it. If you are still on the ways is there a gantry or crane available there to pull the engine, after of course, you make a hole for it to exit? I have a sawzall and a battery skill saw if you need them.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
edsr- both sort of. Warrenton is doing some bottom work/maint. right now. The boats coming home after that and I'll be figuring out the big job after that. If the engine would pull I'd like to find a one stop yard who would pull and do the valve job. Since the floors got to come out anyway (90% sure) the head can be pulled in the boat once that's done. I'll probabaly do the "woodwork" myself then just hire a Cat Mechanic to pull the head, do the machine work and reassemble the engine in the boat.
I'll probably put the floor back in myself and hopefully make it removable for future work (not clear until I tear into it how "removable" it is now). The carpet is a big question. It's a specialty type of carpet laying. Everything is folded and glued around the Salon hatches that open up to the engine room. Very little material, lotsa labor. Not your normal tack strip/glue tape job (I've done that). Not sure who would be best to do this sort of work but the yacht shops (like Schooner Creek) should be able to supply or recommend someone. Only good thing is that the carpet is really stained and needs replaced anyway. Way to light of original color for a dang fishing boat. Headliner is trashed too. Who would put an light beige Ultrasuede in TUNA catching machine?
Looks like it's going to be a short and expensive winter. :depressed:

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
Mel,
Guess who needs to replace their carpet also
The fold and mold seems like a pretty good idea.
Let me know I want in on that deal also. My carpet
started out light Blue this spring, now it's a
lovely shade of blueish Tuna blood brown.
How about teak floors, we can go together on wood and save some $$$$$.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
When Andy built my boat he was thinking about using it as a fishing boat
and the only carpet is on the upper parts of some walls and the ceiling. He
put removable *thick* rubber matting for the floor ... course, mine isn't a
yachet. It's built for fishing!

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
Do you suppose they make a carpet in "Vibrant Tuna Essence"? It would add that, earthy country casual feel to the sophisticated world of yachting.
That blood is really hard to get off, even on painted plywood, it took some scrubbing and a pottent mix of cleaners.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
$$$$$ Ouch, Mel. Couldn't you have picked some less expensive winter projects? I'm just putting in a new electric panel, compressor on the deck freezer, and an injector job.
Two good guys to talk to about where to take your boat in our area, or who to work on it are Jim Sparks and Hugh Brock. Let me know if you want their digits. They will give you straight answers.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
8knots- I know Jim I think (had Country Girl till just recently right?), he's a retired Detroit Diesel guy. Won't touch my Cats but he did give me a name one time. Don't know quite what I did with it.
I don't know who Hugh Brock is though. I'll give you a jingle after I get the boat home and do some preliminary demo work so I can see what it's going to take to get to the head/manifolds.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
Hugh is kind of moving away from working so much so he can enjoy his fishing troller conversion that he is working on. He and Jim know one another well. Hugh taught diesels at PCC and he has worked all over the state. He would be able to tell you who to talk with. Does Cook Engine work on Cats? They are expensive, but do good work. I had them help me take out my old Onan and help slip a new Northern Lights genset through a tight door.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
Mel's gonna have to find a warf somewhere.
We need to get the boom somewhat level with the
salon and real close. If Mel want's to use it, I'll keep my eyes closed.

Re: Mel / Keta -- OMC
miss b, if you need a way to pull your engine get ahold of the people who operate the sling at ilwaco, ive seen them pull a few engines out of charter boats and bring them up and set them in the back of trucks and haul them away.
