Default Winter Gear Buying Season Begins!!

Hey with all this talk about end of the season, hibernation, and surviving until next summer, it's time to play "LET'S BUY MORE GEAR WE DON'T REALLY NEED!"

Let's see some suggestions for the Xmas list!

I'll start things off by suggesting that Popeye buys this beauty of a fishing aid for Julie (or whomever is man enough to wear it):

web page

Shoot I'll bid on this thing for a tunaholics meeting door prize if nobody else does!

Mark, you could buy it now for 5.95!!!

I'm thinking Chart plotter...and live bait tank (Umpqua bait has live bait before they shock them)...and a coulple of new rods and who else knows what. It's a long time till the Baja trip and TUNA season. I have lots of time to droll I mean dream when I look at the catalogs,

I tell ya though, pink is not my color

Fishwhenican..........where is the umpqua bait facility located??? Do they process bait during the summer months?? Also, do they have anchovies.

Thanks for the comeback

Maaaarteeee,

Remember the tray anchovies I brought on that last trip with you (that we mooched with and caught those baby sablefish on)? Those were from the same company, in Winchester Bay. Orca (Mark T.) picked them up for me. If we were only a little insane, we could rig a bait tank up in the truck, and bring 10 scoops up for a trip or two. A charter friend was trucking live bait (like 50 scoops at a time) from Sausalito to Bodega, which was about 1.5 hours.

Mark......find out the specs on the tank your friend used. Does it have baffles to limit water surging, pumps to keep bait moving, air circulation, how big was the tank to hold 10 scoops?? How much die off?? Most important, do they have chovies in July and August. We could have 5 or 6 boats ready to go, thus splitting the cost, pump them into the bait tanks and WOW!! The only problem is once folks started fishing live bait it would be hard to go back to just trolling. Talk to us big guy.........

Heya Marty n Mark...Do albies actually eat live "chovies"?? I thought that only worked down south. You guys already catch way too many now, oh by the way, with only the two of you fishing, who's gonna be the guy throwing the one bait at a time all the time to keep the fish around the boat when you're both hooked up?? Great problem to have huh? Also please let the El Shaddai know where you guys are so we can go the other direction,,wouldn't have a chance against the "live" stuff. Good luck on figuring something out guys.. Fishing live bait,,boy what memories.......

Marty, my friend Mike down south built the truck bait tank, just like he built & re-built everything else (like the bait tank, generator, engines, etc. on his 65 ft Blanchard). I can find out what his design was like, & how well the bait survived. I would think you'd use all the same desireable characteristics of the on-board tank. But since you'd be re-circulating the same water, I think you'd want to add one or more aerators, maybe even some filtration, and lastly have more gallons of water per scoop since it is being re-used. Normally you'd want about 15 gallons / scoop. So if we wanted a 10 scoop truck tank, it should probably be closer to 200 gallons. Guess whose truck we'd need for that? Also, it would help if the bait dealer did a few things to ensure survival, like getting cured (in the reciever for a while) bait, and scooping it in very small net-fulls.

BTW hello Mr Gotchall & Les & Jen....

Should we start a new thread called "operation bait truck"?

I'd be real interested in getting in on some of this bait as well. Sheesh, you guys could just about do a daily trip back and forth of the truck just to keep us stocked up in bait.

So this is just speculation, but I have a feeling the big issue with having a live bait supply in Oregon are the regs.
You can use live bait in Oregon (in certain areas) but the bait must originate from the place it's being used. A "foreign species" preventive measure I'm sure.
So- what do you think the "regs" are for a business trying to sell live bait out of pens? If they are under the same restrictions then they must net the bait in the same place they have their pens. Ok for herring in Newport, Anchovies in the CR etc.
Imported bait may be a big no-no.
Opinions? Facts?

Hi Mel, the way I understand that regulation is that the bait must be used in the same body of water. The intent is to prevent non-native species from entering a new body of water, such as the disaster at Diamond lake with the chubs that were brought in as live bait, and have now taken over the lake.

Now I have not spoken with the bait folks in Winchester Bay, but I would assume that they are seining much of their bait from the ocean. Even if they seined some of their bait in the bay, this bait comes from the ocean, so bringing it up to Newport, putting it in a boat, then giving it swimming lessons 20 miles out would not be introducing a non-native species.

I'd be real surprized if the regulators thought differently on this. But yes, we should look into it to be sure so thanks for the reminder.

Last year there were tens of thousands of anchovies milling around in Depoe Bay for over a month. They never left. It would have been really easy to throw net them into a receiver, cure them and reap the rewards. How about approaching the Umpqua Bay Bait boys and finding out if they could DELIVER a LOAD to Newport. Its not really that far. Someone would just have to build a big receiver strong enough to keep the seals out. You could even put split bins in it and load one side with herring to sell to the sports and charters to pay for the anchovies for the ifishers. Oh, my gosh............I think I need a rum and coke to settle my nerves.

Hey, doesn't the AssAssin have a live tank on his boat???? Maybe we could trick him into a salmon trip and the bait boat could meet us half-way. This is what rum and coke does to your thinking.

Well Pilgrim the list is pretty long. New fish finder, radar, live well, console enclosure or small cuddy cabin or spray canvas or maybe some of all of dem things, jump seats.

I also saw a dandy pol' made by Bait O' Eggs that would be just the thing for stand-up tuna fishing, plenty of backbone and it looked gooood!!

Illwaco has a live anchovie pen. I tried a trip with live bait last year. I trolled the surface baits until we hooked up, I put the boat in neutral, and threw a handfull over. It was pretty windy so the boat swung around, all the lines that were out tangled, and the one we had on wrapped them all. Not being one of an enormous amount of patience, we stuck to trolling after that. I have a live well on the boat and a couple of live bait rods/reels (Shimano bait runners) and will try it again next year. I have an aquaintance (it's amazing how many friends you make while looking at the tuna gear in Englund Marine) that live baits a bunch. He had many 20+ fish days with live bait and 20# gear. He does troll, but prefers live bait. He fishes out of Astoria. So he swears by it.

I haven't tried them for salmon - has anyone on here? I would imagine they would work well, however.

Geez.... To many people have tuna on the brain. I thought this string would have good advice on what to buy and where the bargains were on the net in the off season. All I got was a long string on live bait.

As for Key West's question about how to use live bait. I am beginning to wonder about him. If I remember the Keys... live bait is a common practice down there along with fly fishing for bonefish. Maybe he is from the other end of the highway that Tom Boudett talks about in his ads for Motel Six. The end that has a long jetty and ends with a ferry to Dutch Harbor...

Mark MC and Marty, Sorry I was away from the computer for a few days. The bait pens are attached to the floating dock that Umpqua bait is located on. They usually have what ever bait is in style, or whatever they can catch. They have had herring, anchovies, and sardines on different occasions. I made one trip out of Winchester Bay this year for tuna, and have a couple of spots marked. I have kept somewhat in e-mail contact with a guy I meet in Baja and I have been picking his brain about live bait fishing and bait wells. I see no reason why anchovies won't work on tuna here the same as further south. My friend from Ca. that live bait fishes use anchovies for salmon all the time. I can tell you live anchovies catch chinook, I jigged my own then feed them to Mr. King.

Not sure I would want to use a vehicle that wasn't already rusted to haul lots of salt water and a few fish though.

KeyWest,

Doing the live bait thing sure is a lot of fun. After a jigstrike, one guy tosses a bunch of bait over the side while sombody else clears all the trolling gear outta the way, and the skipper slowly throttles the boat down..When the trolling stuff is in, grab your bait rod and if you can fly-line, gently lob your bait out remembering it can be a challenge casting into the wind, or else just get the wind in your face and dump your bait over the side, stripping line out so the bait swims away from the boat..Wind in your face is so the boat drifts away from your bait and not over it. Try to throw some bait over the side every so often to either keep the fish around the boat or perhaps get them into the biting mood. Remember you want to get into the water as soon as possible, so do all of this as fast as you can..Later, after you get used to all this chaos, after a hookup, a guy can maybe reel up one trolling rod and then dump a live bait over the side before the boat has come to a complete stop,,this is referred to fishing "the slide". A very effective method using either a live bait or swim bait(fishtrap)..Again, getting into the water ASAP is very important..

Salmon, albacore or whatever all sure seem to enjoy the live stuff.....

Hey Dave, you're not going to believe this. I bought a new Avet LX, the earlier model without the clicker. Got it a week ago. Geez what a fine work of machining-art. I still need to spool it up and go down to the park for a casting demo. Which one you getting? I'll show you mine if you show me yours!
