Default Shipping Canned Fish

Sending some out this week and have never done it before.

Has anybody had problems with this? seals popping en route, etc. ?

I was just going to pack it in bubble wrap in a small box.

Now Jimmy- where'd ya get that Canned Feeesh at?

Jars or Cans ( I'd be concerned about breakage on jars)?
Not sure about air shipping, temperature and pressure changes. I'd think UPS ground would be safer (and cheaper).

Secret TUNA grounds.

Well I'll have to just send 'em one jar then.
I'd hate to have more than one break. If it gets there OK, then I know I can send them more...in a couple of years...maybe...if they're really nice to me

I'd be real cautious sending it very far. Perhaps you should try a short run, say.....to my house. I'll open it, give it the ol' taste-test, and if all comes out ok, I wouldn't hesitate to move forward. I'm thinking about a dozen pints for solid confirmation.

Nah, wrap it good as stated above, maybe post "Fragile" all over it. It should be fine...Oh, put rings on and tighten them down good.

Hey, fellow Zappatista! The water in those jars was steam when it was getting canned under 10 or more pounds of pressure. Now when cool the water is about 1500 times denser and there is a near perfect vacuum in the jar. The lid will not come off unless it gets struck just right on the edge or the jar breaks. I have sent whole cases in the box the jars come in with no issues. Use the rings for extra insurance.

BTW if a jar does break it will stink up the entire contents of the aircraft cargo hold. Expect a phone call if this happens.

Don't ask me how I know this.

MY- Putting "fragile" on a package is like walking around in the woods during hunting season in a deer suit!

IDP, wait til you bag your own Tuners next summer. Dude, you have no idea. I have yet to meet anyone who was not instantly converted to the church of the bent rod by fishing for Albacore with a rod and reel from a small boat.

Hey Pilar....pretty amusing image of the ground crew going into the cargo hold after a tuna jar busts open! We best be careful; Ashcroft may get us under the Patriot Act for threatening an airline with tuna vapor.

How ya been anyway? Haven't heard from you in a while.

I have sent two "CARE" packages to po'folks on the east coast. If you can get one of those Omaha Steak foam packing boxes and fill the voids between the bottles with foam peanuts they work great. Cardboard boxes would be fine also just wrap each jar in several layers of newspaper and cushion the bottles with foam peanuts and leave enough room to cushion things well. I sent jars of tuna and some smoked vaccuum sealed pieces. everything arrived intact.

The po'folks sent me some fishin poles and a couple of Penn reels they found at garage sales - good deal.

Thanks all,

I'll make sure they're cushioned well as I don't want to be in violation of the patriot act.

Thanks for the offer on the stro boxes Bug Flicker. I'll let you know if I think I'll need one.

I do believe, Pilar. Im excited each day knowing (not knowing) what im in for this summer.
It wasnt all bad that I couldnt make it this summer. I had the chance to get much better acquainted with my new boat . Fished her 40 days.
I will be more confortable , confident and better prepaired , this summer. I will still need lots of instruction an guidance (like tag along) and Im jacked. Way jacked. id. painter

Mark Mc., thanks for asking. It's ok I guess. The leg is getting better slowly but I am going crazy due to physical inactivity. The not being on here much is because my fishing activities have been almost completely curtailed. There is just too much else mandatory to do to spend any time on the fun stuff.

For a guy in recovery like me, hanging out with the gang is like an alcoholic hanging out at the pub with his drinking buddies. So for now I'll just lurk and remain a distant but interested observer.

BUG_FLICKER, I would be interested in one of those styrofoam vet boxes. I had one from providence medical and shipped FedEx overnight back east. My folks got still frozen tuna...20lbs worth after 16hrs. I have sent jars but had them break....yes the airlines do call. So I bought a small canner and do 8 and 16 ounce cans..not jars.

Robalo Bill, have you found a good source for cans. We also do cans, but have difficulty finding a good deal on them.

Thanks again Mel,

TUNA for a winter (at least) and memories forever.

8knots the canner I bought was made in the midwest an aluminum manufacturer. He put me on to
Wells can co in Canada. These guys carry all the home canning equipment including food grade tins. I checked out a couple of closer outfits...in California but found Wells superior. The major benifit his fish cans nest...so your supplies take up little room. The other outfits had cans but were straight sided so you needed alot of room just to store the empty stock.

BUG_FLICKER..I have a place in Hillsboro could we hookup for a box or two?

Man- wells can has really high prices for the All American Canners! $225 US for the 921. The link that was posted on the "type of canner" thread had the same canner for $150 (pressure cooker outlet).

Cans sure would be nice. Eat and toss. My jars seem to just disappear anyway. If you give canned tuna away it would be a lot cheaper to do the metal cans. I haven't got a jar back yet. :depressed:

Here's another source for cans. They don't have pricing on line but it looks like they have "nestable" Tuna cans and are located in the US (CA). http://www.ehcan.com/FoodCans.html

These guys can make custom labels for ya too! I like it... Miss B Havens Pure Virgin Tuna!

I emailed Embarcadero Cans to see what they charge for 500 8oz cans. Wells was the cheapest I could find last year, and that wasn't too cheap, something like .89 per can. I too, noticed how expensive their All American Pressure Cookers were when I was pricing those.

Other than the expense for the cans I really like dealing with them over glass. Just have to find a good source for them.

Just so you all know...I researched the cost of these tins. Ordered from different outfits then verified their source for these nesting cans. Welllll...I found out who makes them...it's "Ball" the same people who make the jars. After several attempts I found the man in charge of sales. After a long phone conversation, he had no problem supply us with cans, when I told him how many we could use, he kind of giggled. His sales involve trailer or container loads....millions of cans. I didn't nee that many and asked for the best supplier (cost/delivery) that they send to....he said Wells Can in Canada. I also inquired as to the many custom canneries on the Oregon coast...his response was they also bought from from Wells.
That's the latest os of 10/31/03 on foodgrade cans any other oher sources would be appreciated'
