Favorite fishing quote?
I have recently lost a good friend and fishing partner and we are making the arrangements for his memorial service.
I've noticed the quotes that a lot of people have at the end of their posts. Rather than sort through and search out all of them, I would appreciate it if you would post your favorite fishing related quote and who said it. This also might be nice for other people to have a lot of fishing related quotes in one place.

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
"God, but it's wonderful to stand in the middle of a wild river with the stream tugging at your knees, joy singing in your heart and the line shooting out into the boiling water. There's a sudden stop and flash, and the reel gives line with a song. You work your way, fighting every inch, and the fish fighting too. It'll be five minutes before you get to a suitable place to beach him and three minutes after that before you get a thumb in his gills and a finger in his mouth. Last but not least, what beauties they are." Roderick Haig-Brown July 29, 1928

Probably isn't appropriate in this case but "Old fishermen never die, they just smell that way." is one of my favorite.

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
"three more and one for the road" It is hard to know when to quit a spot on the river(stop casting), so when it is about time to go, I silently say to myself, "three more and one for the road" (I have hooked fish on the "one for the road" more than once)

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
"your not going to catch them sitting in the living room"
-my father
this was his canned response to people that didn't go fishing that day - asking him how he was able to catch as many fish as he did...
or if one of us boys would question wether we should go fishing because the water was too high, or it was raining, or any of the many other excusses one can search for to not go out that day.
Also - see below

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
One time Gary Krum sat in my boat nosed in at the Island Ramp on the NF Lewis. It was a magnificent May day. Sunshine, water ouzels all around, the little trickle of a waterfall gurgling beside us. We had just waved good-bye to our 8 clients, who had together boated 24 spring chinook.
I poured him a drink of JD. He raised it and said --- "Sometimes it all just works out fine." I miss Gary ..... :depressed:

Fishing is worth any amount of effort and any amount of expense to people who love it, because in the end you get such a large number of dreams per fish.

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
I have that Thoreau quote framed in my kitchen, but I've never found any evidence that he ever said or wrote it.
My favorite may be "when the going gets tough, the tough go fishing!" but that's probably not the best choice. Here's one I used at my dad's memorial:
"I have laid aside business, and gone a-fishing." Izaak Walton, The Compleat Angler
I have a whole little book of quotes.
"People often ask me why I enjoy fishing, and I cannot explain it to them because there is no reason in the way they want meanings described. They are asking a man why he enjoys breathing when he really has no choice but to wonder at its truth." A.J. McClane
"I stared at that unexpected bouquet of orange and green and white as if I had been hypnotized. I was suddenly a kid again, and if I had been struck dead at that very moment I probably would have said "brook trout" the way Orson Welles said "Rosebud" in Citizen Kane " E. Donnall Thomas, Jr.
"Angling: incessant expectation, and perpetual disappointment." Arthur Young
"Bragging may not bring happiness, but no man having caught a large fish goes home through an alley." Anonymous

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
This is a poem I read every time I'm up at my dad's house. It is placed inside the framed picture of my uncle who passed away while in the military serving his country.
Out Fishin'
Edgar Guest
A feller isn't thinkin' mean,
Out fishin';
His thoughts are mostly good an' clean,
Out fishin'.
He doesn't knock his fellow men.,
Or harbor any grudges then;
A feller's at his finest when
Out fishin'.
The rich are comrades to the poor,
Out fishin';
All brothers of a common lure,
Out fishin'.
The urchin with the pin an' string
Can chum with millionaire an' king;
Vain pride is a forgotten thing,
Out fishin'.
A feller gits a chance to dream,
Out fishin';
He learns the beauties of a stream,
Out fishin';
An' he can wash his soul in air
That isn't foul with selfish care,
An' relish plain and simple fare,
Out fishin'.
A feller has no time fer hate,
Out fishin';
He isn't eager to be great,
Out fishin'.
He isn't thinkin' thoughts of pelf,
Or goods stacked high upon a shelf,
But he is always just himself,
Out fishin'.
A feller's glad to be a friend,
Out fishin'
A helpin' hand he'll always lend,
Out fishin'.
The brotherhood of rod an' line
An' sky and stream is always fine;
Men come real close to God's design,
Out fishin'.
A feller isn't plotting schemes,
Out fishin';
He's only busy with his dreams,
Out fishin'.
His livery is a coat of tan,
His creed -to do the best he can;
A feller's always mostly man,
Out fishin'.

Re: Favorite fishing quote?
God grant that I may live to fish
until my dying day,
And when my final cast I've made
and life has slipped away,
I pray that God's great landing net
will catch me in it's sweep;
And God in his great mercy will
judge me big enough to keep.
Author unknown to me.
This was on my Dad's memorium with a picture of him holding a 35# fall Chinook from the Alsea. His favorite picture.

"It's all part of the show folks!"
Alsea guide who had just fallen into the bottom of his boat, helplessly entangled in anchor rope, bobber rods, net, and his kicker failing to... well kick, and his customers sit idly by as his boat begins the noted river death spiral :grin:
Sorry Jim, but it is now a manditory statement whenever anything goes wrong on the boat.

Two of my favorites
There's a fine line between fishing and just standing on the bank looking stupid.
You might be able to find a better guide but you can't pay more :shocked:
And as said above (kinda) if it was easy they would call it catching.
