Fuel in Depoe (update)
This story ran in today's Newport paper....
The Depoe Bay harbor expects to be able to offer fuel to boats for the foreseeable future, Councilor Jack Brown told the city council Tuesday.
The Depoe Bay Harbor Commission is still looking for a long-term solution to the problem posed by the shutting down of the Imperial Marine fuel dock, and is working with the Oregon Marine Board on the matter.
Brown was joined at Tuesday's council meeting by Fred Robison, who attended on behalf of the harbor commission.
A truck from PMK in Toledo has been visiting the harbor to keep the boats supplied with fuel, Brown said. "They've been really great," Brown said. "They only have two trucks, and this kind of keeps one tied up longer than they might like, but they've promised to keep it going through the end of this year. They've been quite gracious."
For the longer term, Brown and Robison have been working with Ronald Rhodehamel of the Oregon Marine Board to search for the funds needed to put in a small, publicly-owned, state-of-the-art fuel pump at the harbor.
Brown said Rhodehamel helped Depoe Bay before with Oregon Marine Board funds for boat launch facilities and a fish cleaning station. Brown and the harbor commission are putting together a grant proposal package, and held a pre-application meeting with Rhodehamel earlier this month.
Brown asked the council for authority to move forward with the next two stages of the process that will lead to submission of a grant proposal in December. Stage one was the pre-application meeting, Stage two is a draft application, and stage three would be to take that draft to the harbor commission and to Rhodehamel for input.
He said the marine board may be able to make a decision on funding in January, and noted that other help may be available through the Oregon Economic and Community Development
Department, "but they won't even think about it till OMB makes up their mind."
The council gave Brown the approval to proceed.
At present, boat skippers call PMK and arrange for visits to the harbor.
