Hog Hunting Adventures
I know most of the folks on this forum are up in Oregon and with your limited hog hunting, thought i'd share a few recent adventures down here in California.
The first trip was one of our best, coming away with two hogs over 3". Both were taken with an Encore in 30-06. After my initial shot on this boar, i reloaded 3 times, missed with each one, then ran back to my buddy to get more bullets...when i got the hog back in the sights, he fell over dead.
This is my buddies hog, a monster and over 3"

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
Thanks guys, this is a leased ranch.
Here's another trip from two weeks ago. The land owner asked if i could get a good meat hog, so around 1pm that day, i glassed up a small herd of sows about a mile away. By the time i got the meadow, they were all gone and in the brush. Easing thru there, i spotted this one at 15 yards. At the shot, the 7mm rolled'er a few times and in 30 minutes, i was headed home.

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
and finally, here's yesterday's trip;
The front sow was shoot very well at 41 yards, the blood trail was incredible and i was pretty suprised to find her bedded up and still alive. At 15 yards, she stood when i whistled and turned right at me.....she didn't live long when the arrow struck her skull.
The 3" boar in the back spun as soon as i shot my arrow, hitting him high, just missing his ear and going the length of his body. Exiting his rear leg. I knew it wasn't a killing shot, so i went back to the truck to get my rifle. The hog finally jumped up at 20 yards and took off running, i ran as hard as i could to catch up and was paralelling the hog at full speed, he finally slowed and i sent a 7mm high, just behind his skull.
He began running again, this time stopping, facing me and popping his teeth at 20 yards, this shot hit'em just between the ears and dropped'em.

You look like you are having to much fun. Congrats on all the bacon. Wish the weather was warm here, you look like you dressed for moderate temps.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I would like to know where in OR one can go Hog hunting and find success. It looks like a lot of fun and more opportunities to shoot things will never be passed up by me.

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
Everybody in Oregon wants to know where to hunt pigs - those who know, dont share.
Kirk - Excellent work on the hogs! I am trying to find some time to head down there soon, possibly February. I miss hunting those things

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
There's definately hogs in Oregon, but there's ALOT more in California. The only problem, only 4% or so are killed on public land......so if you want to kill a hog, booking with either a guide or paying for a semi-guided hunt is the quick way to success.

I've been hearing about the Madras hogs for years. Some folks say they are all on private land and you can't get on to hunt (for free). A friend of mine killed a couple for a fee several years ago on a ranch that was in the business. The way they breed I would expect that it wouldn't take much time to get a huntable population if a pair of them escaped. So why haven't they escaped? Beats me.
Why haven't some of those California critters slipped over the border and created a huntable population in S. Oregon? I wouldn't be surprised if they have, but its kept secret. But, actually, the ODFW is at war against these critters and if there was a population somewhere I suspect they'd do all they could to get us all to run down there for some meat, or they'd keep it a secret so they could wipe them out before anyone could object. If you see any the ODFW would like to know about it so they can wipe them out. Maybe that is why the info is so hard to come by. If you want to keep hogs around I wouldn't leak their whereabouts to a blabbermouth, but I wouldn't object if someone leaked me a tip because they are every bit as good as store bought pork on the table. Mmmmmmm.
Hogs breed like crazy. They pop 'em out about 13 at a time, up to three times a year, and breed at less than a year old. That could keep a guy in regular meat. They also cause a lot of damage which is why they have their enemies.

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
The Oregon hogs are here but mostly on private land.
I have been trying to find a huntable spot for a few years now but the only hog I've seen was on private land out in Sams Valley here in southern Oregon.
I have a few spots that seem promising but havent found one yet. Hopefully 2009 will have bringing home the bacon

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
one of the things I miss about living in rural Nocal is pig hunting. I was fortunate enough to have a friend who owned/leased lots of land in NW Sonoma county that had a good population of them. He has his ranch for sale and I should try to get down this winter although he has said deer are pretty much extinct and pigs are endangered due to cats.

Re: Hog Hunting Adventures
Kirk,
Where abouts are you getting into all those hogs? My buddy runs a hog hunting outfit down by Mariposa. There is a lot of hogs down there, and it was a blast chasing them with some dogs.
