Extra Fuel Tanks
My dad picked up several CLEAN 35 gallon plastic drums that can be used as fuel tanks, using either the UG or Keta method. They are in West Salem and he paid $1.00 each for them. If anyone wants one or two let me know and they're yours, for $1.00 each.

I can pick yours up if you want Ed. I'm a LOT closer than you. We can work how to get them to you later.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
Now, I'm curious.
What is the UG or Keta method for turning these into fuel tanks?
Inquiring minds want to know!

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
Not sure about UG, but I think Keta fills them with natural gas.
It's free and he seems to have a lifetime supply!

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
Drums are spoken for.
PL,
I will try to draw and post how I did it. There is little difference between the two methods. Fishplay has one I built for him.
Miss B,
I haven't had gas for a few minutes.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
I believe it's been said before, so I'll post the reminder again:
Technically, tanks must be tested by the CG or a certified designate, and must be constructed per CG specifications. I am not saying "do not do this." Just be aware of what you're getting into, so that if you ever get boarded & inspected, expect that they may raise it as an issue.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
Mark Mc-good point
They are REALLY particular about permanent below deck fuel tanks/fittings and hoses. Above deck (portable) fuel tanks have to be strapped down I remember, not sure all what else.
I'm not sure about packing spare drums above deck, they aren't "fuel tanks". If they are DOT for gas or diesel I'd think you would be OK (not sure though).
Lots of boats do this and many are published in magazines (we've all read about long range runs packing spare fuel- most in 55 gallon drums). Might be a good idea to research this one.

I've been checked by the Coast Guard several times and they never said anything about the drums.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
I'm figuring on using mine for a bleed/quench tank. Or is it sacrilegious to use one of these for that.
Whoa, wait a minute! What am I doing here? This is hunting season! What's a tuna?

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
REPOST time!! The following is a repost of a post to another subject that I made
a couple of years ago concerning using the plastic barrels as fuel cells. The
extra fuel cells can be added or removed as needed when the extra capacity is
needed or not ...
"OK, on the subject of spare fuel tanks ...
I fished a dory for years. Did the 5 gallon gas can thing for
years and *hated* it!! Didn't have the deck space to
add more of the 13 gallon fuel cells. Found a solution that worked
for me and maybe for a few of you ...
I went to Freds(?) of maybe Costco(?) in 1999 and bought two
15 gallon water barrels. I then went to the hardware store and bought
brass fittings to downsize the "breather" hole in the top of the
barrel to the size of a male end of a gas line plug. The big hole in
the barrel is for filling.
Went to Harvey Marine and got a couple of the gas tank repair fittings
with the long plastic stems on them (most any marine store should
have them). Fitted these to the barrel.
I strapped the barrels into the boat, one on each side back behind the console.
I also brought along a shorter gashose to go from the barrel to the engine.
With the three 13 gallon tanks (12.5 gallons usable) and two
15 gallon barrel-tanks I had plenty of fuel to run my 90hp 2stroke
Ocean Runner for trips of 40 or less miles for TUNA."
As a side note ... these are probably not legal and are certainly not approved
as fuel containers, but I've had both the coasties and the Staters on my boat and
never had them say anything about using the barrels as fuel cells.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
Mel, you can never have too much fuel on board. You never know when the Smokercraft will get thirsty. Besides a trip to the Chicken Ranch might be fun in a 14 foot boat. I can see it now. Keta and 5 of his best friends, two extra fuel tanks and 6 50 pound butts on the ride back to Newport. The smokercraft might ride a little low in the water.

Re: Extra Fuel Tanks
I was moose hunting.
My Smokercraft is a flat bottom so I wouldn't take it to the ranch. My 12' v hull would be much better.

You were Moose hunting and got checked by the CG?
I knew there were ELK out there in the Big Blue but Moose? I'm not buying that, the pics were probably faked!
No wonder they didn't say anything about the barrels, they were to busy watching that Moose gun of your to even notice the barrels.
