Cinnamon Teal?
Hey, new to IFish I've been meaning to post an intro story - but haven't got around to it yet - anyway - my buddy shot a cinnamon teal today in the valley, it was a drake, from the looks of it mature. Was wondering from ifishers how common / uncommon this bird is for our area?
I will try to get a picture.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
During the breeding season....they are pretty common.
During the hunting season....not so much.
I will say that I have seen more this year than any prior hunting season. I have seen a dozen this year as opposed to an average of 1 or 2.
If the drake is indeed mature, your buddy has himself a nice trophy.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
They are first to migrate south at the end of summer so to have them around during the hunting season is quite rare.
I agree with the others. Get it mounted.

I agree I would definitely mount it. How much does it cost to do a duck mount?

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
Thanks for the info. He's going to have it mounted. I had never seen one of these birds before and was impressed by the bright, baby blue fore wing area. Is this common for this bird? Maybe indicate maturity?

Ask him to post a pic, if he so desires.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
A picture would be great!!
I thought these were some of the last to migrate south??? Although I haven't seen one in some time I took one towards the end of the season when I was 18. Didn't really know what i had then.................... Certainly a rare bird, pending the area.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
I harvested one a few years ago and mounted it. I sure needs cleaning but it was one of the most unique birds that I have shot in the NW.
Get it mounted!

oops, it was early... blue wing is correct. I have a cinnamon also, but took the wrong pic. Blue are rare also around here.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
In about 30-odd years of ducking in Oregon I've never been near close enough to consider shooting at the FEW cinnamons I've seen. This was mostly NW Oregon. Did get into some bluewings down near K-Falls once. Pretty sure those two are amongst the first to go south. SI hunters'd be awful lucky to get either one. Am I wrong?

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
Defiantly would not put BWT or Cinn Teal in the "common" category even during breeding season on the wet side of Oregon. Different story south and east. Even out at Sauvie on opening day I would go so far as to say maybe 1 out of 50 teal that are shot falls into the Cinn/BWT and even then most people would have a very hard time differentiating the two even if they were dead in hand. Any time you can shoot an uncommon bird (drake or hen) it's pretty neat especially if a guy was able to identify it pre-shot.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
I saw two more cinnamon hens today. (could have been the same one twice...we didn't shoot it) They looked a slight bit larger in the flock and when they lit, the orange feet were a dead giveaway.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
It is correct that cinn's and BWT's migrate south really early and are rare when the season opens. When I was in college we were taught that the hens of these two species are so similar that it is impossible to tell the difference and we didn't have to be able to tell the difference for our ID test. I wonder how the drakes can tell the difference. Maybe the hens do the choosing...I don't know.
I'm wondering if these are not color phases of the same species, like snow geese. Hmmm. I guess if that was the case there would be drakes that appeared as half-breeds. Interesting question anyway.

I imagine that the DNA has been reviewed and is different enough to keep them seperate. But maybe not??? I do find it interesting that we do not see more teal/teal hybrid even on wintering grounds after they come into full plumage.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
Quick brag: hit a double cin on opening day this year. I about pooped my pants. Hadn't seen a single one in over 10 years. They're being mounted as merry xmas to me present. I'll post some pics when I get them back.

Re: Cinnamon Teal?
Very cool! Congrats.
If anyone is interested in some prime places to get pics of mature, full plumage Cinnamon Teal in the spring, head down to Klamath Falls. There are a bunch of pastures just north of town on Hwy 97 that hold sheet water as things start to thaw. Every spring there are dozens of paired up Cinnamon Teal just hanging out along the road, sitting in the sun.
They are so bright they catch your eye as you drive past!
