Downriggers for the new N.R.
My friend (just bought a new N.R. sea hawk) and wants downriggers. I told him I like my Scotty's.
He was looking into different brands .. What do you know about Big John downriggers? Good , bad or what ??? thanks for any advice.. id. painter

I didn't like the Big John electric that my brother had. If it was me I'd stick to Scotty or Cannon.

Scotty, lifetime warranty, fastest retreive, lowest amp draw... No question about it.

I agree with Mr. Fisherman! You can't beat the numbers when it comes to performance. They are alson very easy to install on the boat with the scotty plug-in. I didnsome cannon D.R. and they have a cord which you have to find a place to store when they are not in use. Also. if you loose control of the D.R. whil dropping them down the scotty will automatically turn off with their cam break. The Cannon D.R. will just go into free fall--don't ask me how I know this

Ditto the Scotty...installed two on my dad's boat this year. Easy to use too. Wish I had put one on my little boat instead of the Cannon. Oh well

id. painter,
Before you make up your mind, why don't you look closely at the Scotty's ???
I like the heck out of mine and I have had no maintenance problems.

Re: Downriggers for the new N.R.
I was "introduced" to the electric Scottys fishing in Denali's boat on The Reach (Columbia River) and salt water fishing out of Sekiu. They are great - I've got to have some for myself, but first need to replace my bass boat with a different kind of fishing machine. So easy to operate, solid construction - can't imagine going any other route.

Re: Downriggers for the new N.R.
One question if i may...
How does one clean and rinse a downrigger after being out in the ocean...do you have to peel the cable and rinse it? How else could you protect it from the salt water if you don't?

Re: Downriggers for the new N.R.
Once a year, when I take the downriggers off to start river fishing, I either grab my wife or fishing partner and we string out as much of the cable as possible. I use a salt killing chemical and spray down the riggers and cable as the cable is being wound back on. This gets all the jelly fish off the cable, etc... After they air dry, I go and clean the clutch assembly and oil it up appropriately.
Hope this helps. SD
