22-250, need scope help!
I'm buying a 22-250 next week to be my coyote gun. I need help deciding on a scope. I don't want to spend more than $400. I don't know what power i should be looking at. Please give me some suggestions and tips on what scope would be a solid fit for my 22-250 coyote gun. Thanks.

I would consider a Leupold 6x18 or 4.5x14 or a Nikon 4x16 or 5x20.

$400??? Get whatever you want. You could get the Nikon Monarch (I think) Leupold VXII 4.5-14x...sky is the limit.
Whatever you get, make sure it won't exceed the capacity of your rifle, but reaches out pretty far. I think 14X is no problem with the .22-250, but my off hand knowledge is pretty lame sometimes.

Dont forget you'll need some lower end field of view for yotes that sneak in.
I used to use a 6x18 and switched to the Nikon 4.5-14. Its about perfect. If you want to spend more, look at the Bushnell Elite 4200 in the 4-16 style.
Leupold is excellent too, but you lose some field of view as their scopes tend to have a slightly narrower field of view...however, they also tend to be 3-4 ounces lighter if that is an issue for you.
Have fun.

Re: 22-250, need scope help!
thanks guys, thinking of Bushnell's Legend 5-15x40 its like $220 on Cabelas and it has a mil-dot reticle. Also the Bushnell Elite 3200 looks good but only has a standard reticle. DO i necessarily need a fancy varmint reticle or would i be fine shooting coyotes with a standard crosshair? Any other suggestions?

The Elite 3200 is what I have on my .30-06 and I've been pleased with it. I can't see how any shot within 200 yards is going to be a major concern with the reticle. Yotes are a big enough target. It's the ground squirrels that usually get blinded out.

Re: 22-250, need scope help!
I am not a fan of big, heavy scopes. A 3.5-10x is about as big as I keep on a hunting rifle.
For $400, you have lots of options. Here are a few I would consider:
---Pick up a Leupold VX-II 3-9x and send it to the custom shop for an M1 elevation turret.
---Pick up a Leupold VX-II 3-9x with an LRD reticle.
---Find a close-out Leupold VX-III 3.5-10x and run it as-is. There are lots of deals on the discontinued VX-III's right now.
As you can see, I am a bit biased toward Leupold riflescopes. There are other good scopes out there, but I just don't have any complaints about the Leupolds I own.

The Weaver Grand Slam series are in that price range. I love my 4.5x14.

Re: 22-250, need scope help!
If you plan on calling coyotes I wouldn't get a higher powered scope. I have Leupolds on all of my calling rifles. 3-9X40 or 4-12X40 or better yet a 50mm objective lens is about perfect. Compare FOV with all of the scopes and I think you'll be pleased with the Leupolds. VXI is okay but VXII is even better but maybe well over your $400 limit. You don't lose any FOV with the 4-12 over the 3-9. That 3.4-10 is a good choice, too.
Adjustable objectives and target turrets aren't great on a calling rifle, either. Keep it simple. Mil dots are nice for shooting sage rats, etc, but you will appreciate that standard Duplex crosshair when you're trying to make a quick shot on a running dog at the ranges you shoot at called predators.
I have a Leupold VXIII 6.5-20X40 with a Varmint reticle on a custom Remington heavy barreled 22-250 and it's a miserable calling rifle. Great on prairie dogs and stationary long range targets, tho.

Re: 22-250, need scope help!
I have several smaller rifles and use BSA scopes on them.
They hold up well and won't break the bank.
I'll pm you a website to look at some.

looking at a few 4.5x 14 scopes. Is this a good power for hunting coyotes?

Also look at the side focus Bushnells in 4.5X14 or 5-16 models. Recoil won't be a big factor. The side focus is handy for close in shooting.
