60 Merc. jet/prop
I have a 17'6" Super Vee that is fitted with a 60 Hp Merc 4 stroke prop. I absolutely love the motor, it get's me right up on step, and top's out at 35mph, and that is fast enough for me. I've thought of converting it to a jet, only to use in upper T-Bay, and the lower rivers, and the using a bay kit for the prop, when in deep water. I realize I would need a transom riser installed. Would the 60 jet get the boat on step? I can't really afford a new 90 jet now. Any comments?

Re: 60 Merc. jet/prop
I'd guess it's going to be a dog. We had a 60hp merc/pump on a 16' smokercraft sled years ago. It actually used the same pump as the 90hp. 2 guys and it was fine. 3 guys and while it would get up, it was slow. Anything over that it it would not plane. This boat was lighter and smaller than yours. Save yourself some money and grief.

Re: 60 Merc. jet/prop
I have the same motor on my boat and have been thinking about the same thing. I figured it was cost prohibitive though and didn't really even look into it. I figure maybe I will get a drift boat for the smaller rivers and just live with the water I can acess with the prop.

Re: 60 Merc. jet/prop
I think it would be a real dog, performance wise. I'm running a 115/80 jet on an 18' alumaweld and wish that I had a 150/115.

hey save your self the money don't convert it a 60 / 30 jet will not push a 16 foot boat at all that's why there's a prop on it boat won't ride right either to much degree hey alanmikkelsen we've got a 18 duckworth keani with a 115/80 jet just put a four bladed stainless impeller in it then you'll get up and move with a big load !!!

Re: 60 Merc. jet/prop
I have a 90 2stroke on my 16' Smokercraft, just right for me. Replaced a 60 4stroke, it was lame. Can't have too much power.

I've got a four blade stainless impeller. I can get it up on plane with four guys in it without a problem. I just want to go faster......

Re: 60 Merc. jet/prop
I have been thinking exactly the opposite. I know my home water well enough that I want a 60 hp 4-stroke prop for my 17'7" Alumaweld Stryker. I have a 97 75 hp mercury mariner 2-stroke outboard jet. Although I think this is an optimum setup for this boat (does about 28 mph WOT with 3 good sized fisherman, 8 hp yamaha t8, and a minn kota genesis) I would like the economy of a 60 hp mercury or yamaha 4 stroke outboard prop as this would be ideal for a for for my boat. If I went to a 90 HP 2-stroke I would gain atleast a 100 pounds. If I went to a 90 hp optimax or 90 hp 4-stroke I would gain around 150 pounds so I think I will use this motor until someone wants an outboard 2-stroke jet such they are willing to trade or this one explodes(unfortunately I think it will run forever). It does run nice, it just burns a lot of fuel.
