Saw the same report and don't know if I will come down. It looks a little dicey on the Sand Island side with the south wind. Don't have enough brass to go under the light house after what I saw last weekend. I may go into Baker Bay. Channel 71 on the VHF is where I can find you?? If I am down will give you a hail on the VHF. It is an early tide so maybe the wind will ease just a bit

Royalfish-
If I'm not scanning (11, 13, 16, 19, 22, 68 ,72)
it's cause I was chatting on 11 and forgot to go back. (or cause the radio keeps hanging on an open channel, 16's been full of static/open mikes all dang year). Anywho- if ya can't raise me on 16 try 11.

You'll be in SHEARWATER (Grady) right?

Don't know which side I'll be on (could be the middle  )- I'm playing the wind too when I get out.

PS- I didn't have the brass to even leave the dock last weekend!
PSS- Swings are so small the tides don't really matter much for crabbing. Less than a foot at a jetty Saturday morning, bout the same Sunday.

Hey Mel. I was down changing oil on Wed. damn what a blow, spent the nite on the boat and thought it was going to jump up on the finger a couple times, If you see some extra lines on your boat, that was Don going around checking everthing. Guess a gust or two was around 65kts,better than the 85+ when I stayed on it last year....Roger

Sounds like last Friday night Rojo. We got woke up about 50 times when the gusts/rain squalls hit. I still felt I slept better than on dry land!

I've got 5 good lines on Miss B, unless the cleats pull off the dock she's not going anywhere.

Not as sure about my canvas up top, it's like having a small spinnaker up there!

Mel, we're planning on coming down. Anyone have extra crab bait? Both CD and I have cleaned out our freezers for the last go round and have nothing.

Steve - I've got some extra but not much. Why I didn't save all my TUna bellies this year I'll NEVER know. The Tuna were so big that the heads wouldn't fit in the cages (and they take a ton of freezer space I didn't have), but why I didn't think to take the bellies off for bait until the last trip! D-OH They store real easy and compact (and no pokey bones  ).

only thing I have "extra" is a bunch of those big Sardines that we got from Sturgeon Paul ($2.50 for 3 :depressed: )and tried tossing to the Tuna last couple trips. I haven't ever tried them but the should work, they are real oily!

Tom (Minaki) said "Bud's" in Gearhart sells Makeral (at least earlier).
Kinda tough when the waters to rough to catch the crab bait the trip before on the Jetty huh?

Gimmee a call if you want some of those big Sardines (I'll do an inventory tonight). S Pauls has a bunch froze up too. Don't know if Tackle Time is going to be open or if he's shut down for the year. He usually has Tuna and Salmon heads.

Mel, it looks like we are going to pass on tomorrow and take our chances on the next tide set Nov. 1'st. I'm traveling this week to Las Vegas and Tucson and have some home chores to finish before I go, so back to plan A. Thanks for the offer though!

UUMMM, I am at home Saturday morning and trapped with honey do's.(I will not do yard work until fall, I will not do yard work until fall, I promise I will, I promise I will) Wind is up this morning at the beach and will go down next weekend for clamming and crabbing. On the oregon side you might try fergus mcbarend for crab bait 503-325-9592 in Astoria, think they are at the foot of 11th street. They usually have some frozen tuna/salmon around for sale. Jessie's in Ilwaco will be processing chum's and you can get some bait there most of the time. Hope you get a chance to go get some hard shells. Hopefully, see you next week with a clam gun in your hand

Mel,

Drove past the dock this evening - saw that Tom was gone - is he up in PDX? Went Hammond to the Bouy and saw Steve and Roger - neither had any word on crabbing - doing any good?

DEAN,

Good crabbing, Columbia River between Buoy 22 and 20, started at 40' all the way into 20'.
It seemed the pots were fuller the shallower we got. Only problem was the wind gusts of 24 to 40 knots out of the south. Had to fish the Oregon side. We ran to Ilwaco after we threw the pots to take the Girls to the antique stores. A jetty was no fun, that's kind of spooky when the waves are breaking all the way across when leaving the entrance to Baker Bay.

Soaked 7 pots Saturday, 1 pull 55 keepers for 6 bodies. Mel was out Today, back at the dock at 3:30, did real well.
Buds in Gearhart has Mackeral, thoses were the only bait cleaned and stripped in every pot.
We had Salmon Heads, Tuna and Bottom Hulls but think the Mackeral won.
Dean, good to have you on the Board.
Dean is one Heck of a Tuna Fisherman, not to mention a great skipper. I'd sail with Dean anyday or night.

Yep! Nice little weather window Sunday morning ... no wind, small swell,
warm, warm, warm!!! Sunshine and 75 degrees at Dopey Bay. Found TUNA!!! at
15 to 16 miles straight out in a real nice temp/color break. All the fish were
30 plus pounders so I filled my fish boxes and all three 150 quart coolers I had
on board early and headed back in by noon ...

Then I woke up ... :depressed: :depressed:

OK- so it really was a small window. Friday/Sat they were predicting back to 25 knots on Monday (15 on Sat). Sat forecast was right on, it was a little bumpy but not bad. We crabbed the WA side and as Kamloops reported did real well. Mix of bait- Tuna bellies, Bottom carks and some sardines.
I tried something new, used those little crab traps you put on a fishing pole. We anchored up while the pots were soaking and caught a dozen or so on the rods. It was kinda fun, a lot of 'em got away near the surface. Need a small net to be able to dip 'em before they let go. A shad size net would work real well. Anywho... it was fun and gave us somethign to do while the pots soaked. It woulda been to windy/bumpy to troll for Salmon so it was a good alternative.
Anywhooo.... Tuna Tom and his bud from Florida (Dave- but I think I'll call him Ralph) spent the night so we could drink adult beverages cook and eat lotsa crab! At 2 am the blow hit, I had to get up at 3 and go out in the rain and wind to get the Salty Dog Burgee off that was snappin' and crackin' over my head. Never really got back to sleep. Blew 30-40 sustained and had to be 60-65 knot gusts. Every time it got real quiet (for maybe a minute) you knew a big one was coming! Bew like that all day Monday, it was scary just trying to get the gear up the dock to the truck.

Hey Tom (Kamloops) - The wind took the lid right off your full tote. Good thing it floats, it was between my bow and the dock. One of your pieces of insulation didn't fair so well. Dave saw it come out on the dock but before we could get out there it got picked up and hit the piling. It's in a couple pieces somewhere in WA right now I'm sure. Probably end up in your back yard this week. If your yard doesnt wash away!
I put your heavy weighted carb pot on the tote to hold it down. Should be good to 100 mph anyway!

Had a good time and finally got a window and some crab. It was fun to swap East/West and South stories with Tom and Ralph (Dave).

Way to go Mel, I am very jealous that you got those 8 legged crabbie's while I was stuck in P-town doing #@%$#&&%$ around the homestead.
Will be down this weekend as it looks like a reasonable wind/weather weekend for the crab/clam double Don't know where Borsteins is but will find out. Thanks for the tip. Always something new on this thread.
Looks like Shearwater is going to dry dock for the winter after this weekend.
Have fun and be safe out there

Kamloops- I think it's a Honey Do weekend but haven't figured it out yet. Razors huh- sounds fun, maybe I can sneek down for one morning (or afternoon- when's the good tide?). Haven't done the razor thing yet, I'd like to learn! I sure wouldn't have wanted to be on the beach yesterday, you'd get sandblasted for sure!

Royalfish- Bornsteins is just West of 11th steet a little ways. Big fish plant with docks, I think their plant is on both sides of the Trolley tracks.

Thanks Mel for the location. Are you on the water or clam beds this weekend?
Mr. Fisherman, unfortunately, I still have to get my check every couple of weeks, so Thursday for Friday is out. Friday around 4:30 PM I will be leaving Seaview area heading North for the bi-values. Hoggemin and Catch and Eat are up north towards Ocean Park and most likely will be stompin around. Will do the double Sat noon for crabs and later for clams. Have a full boat on Saturday, but would be great fun to go clamming with you or other ifishers on either Friday or Saturday Have some xtra gear if needed. Let me know if you want to join in on the fun!
