Default My pack goats (pics)

Here are some pictures of my pack goats. I have had them for four years and I am happy with them. They obviously can't carry the weight of a horse or mule but they are easy to manage and can go anywhere. You can kind of see in the picture with the yellow quakies, my dads buck from Idaho. It was a real nice nontypical and i'll try to get pics posted later. Thanks for looking.

very cool! In one picture, i see you leading them with a rope. Do you always have to keep them tied up/together? Will they follow without the rope? do you tie them in camp when you go out hunting?

Back when I was living on the Olympic Peninsula (2001ish) I ran into a guy, while hiking the Upper Dungeness Trail, who had a couple of pack goats. That was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen and I had a whole bunch of questions for him. Had to take pictures because I knew that no one would believe me.

Awesome pics!

Where are these goats located?

I would love to see them and talk about goats with you. I am pretty sure I want to go this direction. I cant afford a horse, or mule, to proud to ride a cow, but leading goats looks like a good time.

Goats are awesome !
Santiam338 and his brother Ken have goats too, here they are packing out the meat from my spring bear. I hauled the cape and head, but we managed to get him out all in one trip thanks to the goats.

While I was hunting mulies over in the Ontario area we ran into a local ODFW bio. When we complained about all the cougar kills we had witnessed and wanted to know if we would ever be able to bait them his simple response was "stake a pack goat out". He said it was legal since we could claim they were for hunting purposes just not what most would think!!!!

Santiam338 once told me he sometimes feels like he is trolling for cougars when he hikes with the goats. The mental image made me laugh but I see he isn't the only one who has thought about it.

The thought has crossed my mind a time or two. Anytime I leave mine high lined in camp, they sure make a lot of pathetic sounding noise. I just hope the smell of camp and people keep the big critters away.

Heres a couple more pics. I don't have the pic of my dad's buck here at work so i'll post it in a couple days. The next trip i'm taking these guys on is a spring bear hunt in the Snake R.. As for the leading, they will follow you but the one that is getting led is the "leader of them" so we were just getting them on their way down the trail. 95% of the time I don't lead them. Their temperments are great and they are easy to keep in camp. We just leave them tied up and hunt for the day. I assume they stay queit when we are gone for their own good? The cold doesn't bother them but you have to have a way for them to stay resonably dry. These goats are alpine and alpine/sanaan cross. They are castrated males (wethers). I also rent these guys out to people willing to come over and get a brief lesson. Then you are on your way, not much to it. I have all the gear and they are trail tested. I have a cage for a pickup or a trailer.

Now that's funny right there.

That's one thing you have to get used to with packgoats is the goat jokes. But guys seldom make them as your loading thier stuff onto your goats in the morning

Here is that picture of my Dad's buck we got in Idaho I'd promised. It's his biggest buck and one of our most memorable hunts. Too bad he did'nt have a couple more years to grow. He was a young deer. You have to look close to see all the extra points. After the pictures I kept hunting for the day and he went back to camp to get the goats for the pack. They did great and were not bothered by the dead deer at all.

Thanks again for the "Goat Rental"!!! A sucsessful Spring Bear trip and the "Boys" made it a GREAT trip!!! Great animals! I will post a couple of pics.

I liked them so much I picked up 2 goats yesterday and went on our first hike today and they did VERY well! I still want my week in the spring as my goats probably wont be at full speed yet!

If you are kicking around getting some goats give the boys a test drive before you get your own!!!

Ive enjoyed this thread; I too have pack goats and not only hike with them but hunt also. I took my nice Idaho archery bull this year with my two favorite Oberhasli goats by my side. I really enjoy getting up to high mountain lakes for the fishing opportunities, and since getting the goats, that has been all the easier.
