Default How to tie yarn balls (pic heavy)

It seems like the question gets asked alot and until recently I wasn't exactly sure how to do it myself. So I figured since I was tying some up, I'd take a minute to snap a couple pics and do a write-up. This is the method I use for incorporating them into the knot of an egg loop. All you need is:

hook (I use 1 or 1/0 for steelhead)
leader
yarn ("GLO BUGS" yarn seems to work best)
scissors (must be very sharp, dull scissors will make trimming a real chore)
needle nose pliers

Step 1: This is the only part that is different from tying a regular egg loop. Put the tag end of the leader through the eye off the hook, make a loop and run it back through the eye, leave about an inch hanging out past the eye.

Step 2: Continue tying your egg loop like normal.

Finished egg loop with extra loop for yarn

Step 3: Cut yarn into about 1" lengths. I typically use 4 or 5 pieces. Using multiple colors makes for some really "fishy" looking yarnies, you are only limited by your imagination.

Step 4: Hold the yarn with the ends even and put it in the loop. Try to center the yarn as best as possible.

Yarn centered in the loop before being pulled tight

Step 5: Pull the loop tight. You may need to use pliers to get a good enough grip on the line, all the wraps from the knot make it difficult to pull. Pull slowly, you may need to adjust the yarn to keep it centered while pulling it tight.

After it is tight, trim the excess line left from the loop. This is what it looks like after its been pulled tight and before any of the yarn has been trimmed.

Step 5: Now all thats left to do is trim the yarn to shape. Pinch the yarn between your thumb and index finger and trim with your sharp scissors using your thumb as a sort of "template". Repeat this several times until it takes shape. You can spend alot of time trimming the yarn into a perfect ball if you wish, but I doubt if it makes a difference to the fish.

Yarn trimmed using the thumb as a sort of "template".

Finished yarn ball

Here I pulled the egg loop out so you can see it.

I hope this is a help to someone. I know not everyone likes to incorporate the yarn into the knot but I like it because it leaves your egg loop free for bait or a split shot to run it under a float.

Edit: Here is a video on how to tie the knot I show. Thanks iwanttofish!

That is a nice looking yarnball. I tie mine up separate with magic thread and do then put them on the hook and the bait loop around them. After seeing the way that looks I think I may have to try it out.

looks like the yarn ball is lower on the shank thus covering more of it up...nice idea and thanks for sharing. I will definitely have to try it!

wow, thanks for the post fishnmachine. I've never fished a yarn ball, but do like the way it partially covers the hook shank, you just gave me something more that i don't have time for. Looks like they'd fish great with eggs. Going to try this now...

So is this just like tying the nush knot except not burying the tag end and snugging up the end with the yarn you would normally bury?

This is exactly how I was taught to tie yarnie's (yarn balls) with one exception.............

After I have made my first egg loop knot wraps (about 6 wraps) I lift the yarn loop out of the way and then finish my egg loop knot like normal. What this does is postions my yarn loop above (higher up) on the hook shank so when I add my eggs they sit below the yarn. Kind of hard to describe without pics..............

Fish-N-Machine those are nice yarnies. The DBL egg loop is the best way to do them in my opnion as well. I was taught this a few years ago. Been tying them ever since. I caught several fish last years on "my" yarnies while side-drifting, as well as drift fishing. All those corkie guys don't know what to say after asking what I cot my fish on, and the answer is "just yarn" I never even use bait and still outfish most all my friends (sorry guys).

Bank or boat either way yarnies work!

If you are only fishing the yarn ball with no bait just tie a standard snell. Slip the snell down the shank and put yarn under the line between the knot and eye and pull the snell back up the shank. Makes a very tight ball and its quick to do on the river.

If you want an easier and more flexible way to tie yarn balls check this sight out, been using these since last year and they beat all other ways I've tried before. Just put a bunch of different colors together and stick em in a baggie and your good for the day. Nice thing is you can do them at the Kitchen table and leave your fly tying table alone. I use magic thread for mine I'm not sure what he was using but its the same thing. Dicks has Magic thread. www.steelheadstalkersforum.com/fishing-tips-tricks/how.

I dont have any pics of them wet but they look almost the same because the yarn is pulled together so tight. They also float so you dont need a corkie and their is still an egg loop so u can still use eggs. The only thing is they are time consuming so make them at home and u waste some yarn.

My dad use's a short 2x4 with pegs on each end, notched - Then takes and threads 2-3 colors of yarn same length as the board - held snug between the pegs so that he can tie knots every inch or so around the yarn. Last step is to cut between knots and brush with toothbrush and trim to size. PERFECT yarn balls to thread onto your desired size of hook.

Good thread.
I did a search after tying up some yarnies today.
That's how I tie mine also. I learned it many years ago. I think I've heard it called the tail drager knot.

Several other ways to use the knot if you want to use a corkie with a yarnie and keep it compack is to thread a small corkie on the loop first. when you snug it up the corkie nests into the Yarnie.

Here is something I picked up from somewhere but don't know who to give the credit to.
It makes it much easier with less waist. The picture should give you the idea but simply run your yarn through a tube of some kind then cinch and cut after tighening the knot

I have an old issue Of Salmon Steelhead Journal and there was an article by Travis Moncrief who is a big yarnie user on the coast and says the best material for making yarnies is McFly Foam used for making flies the material even when wet retains the round shape as where regular yarn when wet gets flat

I have heard that Mcfly foam works well.
The material that I use and shown in the picture above never loses it shape, holds scent well and is the least expensive material I've found.
Only trouble is you need to get your supply in Oct. I picked up some of it in UV this year also.

$2 a bag.

2 years later and the only thing I would do different now is have a Crown & Pepsi instead of Corona.

I just tied up a few, and wanted to say thanks for taking the time to make this thread. It made it super easy to do. Here is a pic of my first attempt!

Boy am I glad that movie was there. I learned how to tie an egg loop years ago. Used the same type hook but with a barb. Tieded it below the bard and the barb held it. This way is probably better. Now to find some of that yarn and make some. I did try with regular yarn I have for tieing on pigeons feet to make them, not so hot!

I've got a book with the knot in it and can't tie it from the book!
