Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Has to be the one that Jim (Skein) and Janis (Dipseadiver) dragged to 'Pilar' back in May on a windy Saturday afternoon. Salmon rod, multiple gaff attempts, Jim's 1st Oregon Halibut at 80 lbs, last fish of the day.
Sharing my boat with this long time married couple was a real treat and if I had to do it all over again ... I would not change a thing.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Did I ever hear that full gaff story?
For Miss B it had to be the 35lb Albi that Pete had to drag over the gunnel (barely) on a hand line.
The one that got away was memorable too. Sure wish I had got a look at whatever spooled me last trip out for Tuna! Zzzzzz...zzzzzzz..zzzzzzz.zzzzzzz...zzzzz..
Oh ya.. the whale under the bow pulpit (I had to stop the boat to keep from running over it) was a whopper! You did say "on the boat" though not "under it" didn't you? I gotta get a bigger gaff!

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
I think I had my best fishing day of my life this summer. While fishing about 35 miles out of Depoe by myself in about 75deg weather in shorts and a tee shirt in one of the best looking slicks I've seen I hooked into a triple tuna fishing with rods, and landed all three by my lonesome. That's one I'll never forget!

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Oh man where to start... Do I have to pick just one? It might be the season opener on Pilar with Bait Boy slamin a limit or the next day on Sea Lion limiting the boat the first time I skippered my own boat all the way to the Chicken ranch and back where I caught the first halibut on my new to me boat.... Or fishing the Columbia just after I got it with RainrShine and catching the first Chinook on the boat... Or putting WildHawg onto that 70# Halibut before I went to Ireland... Or it might be the flat out biggest fish landed on my boat by Duff, a first time Halibut fisherman when he caught an 86# Halibut on my Salmon rod in shallow water... He is ruined for life... or it might be catching my first Tuna aboard the Julie Rose III on a stand up rod, or the mass carnage on Miss B Haven where I helped land 22 fish on standup and hand lines and learned the best method for caring for Tuna from Keta... But I think the best time abd best fish I had this year was with Threemuch and Drifty when we limited on Chinook and I brought in a 60# Halibut to finish the day...
Great Googly Moogly, what a year... Maybe I should just retire... NAW! I have a score ta settle with a certain untouched species....
Duff and the current Sea Lion RECORD
Thanks everybody for helping to make this one of my best fishing seasons ever... By the way... It is far from over

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
I don't even have to ponder this one. Me and Diamondback on our virgin tuna voyage, going through the motions like real tuna fishers do (according to this board)and then having our first hookup be a double on standup rods. To have that on video would be priceless. When two virgins are deflowered together, and neither one really knowing how it's really done, it just seems to be mean more. Ack! did I just say that?

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
There were so many this year, I can't really specify just a single fish or trip.
The TUNA were very plentiful for the Sea Jypzee this year. The largest hook up was a quad for 3 of us onboard. We got all 4 of the fish boated, and had 13 fish by 09:30.
Then there was the monday morning I was out with Jamie (my dog) enjoying the beauty of the sun and a nice ocean, and managed to get 5 tuna inside of 10 miles in about 30 minutes.
The friday before the closure of coho season, I came home from work, the sun was shining, the ocean was nice. I decided to go out and get just a couple more for the freezer. Got a nice 25lb Chinook and a coho, then did it again the very next morning, with the same combination.
The halibut day I took 4 co-workers, plus Crambone, and finclipped out to the pile, then to the Chicken Ranch, and boated 7 halibut.
Watching Andy (Woody's son) boat his first Salmon (coho) ever, then turn around and get a nice Chinook to go with it.
Taking Jim and Monroe (my neighbors) out for Coho and limiting out in about 30 minutes of fishing, and Jim getting his first ever Salmon. Seeing the smile on his face was priceless.
Yep, there's just no way to take it down to just a 'single fish' or trip.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Best days were definitely up here with the GregOtis98 team of Greg and Otis for some really good tuna days. Tons of fun once again. Had a few pretty spectacular days down in Costa Rica earlier this year when I was working down there, but it seems to mean more to me to be able to spank 'em in our own backyard. I cant wait to hit 'em again.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Well, this is an easy one. Had the skiff out for a total of 3 albie trips this year. Caught fish on 1 trip. Would be any of the 10 albies I caught on that trip.
This is the driest my hull has been since I've owned it. That even includes living in Minneapolis for a year and a half.
Buying and fixing up my first house has been a challenge, and I'm looking forward to getting back to normal next year!

The grown-ups caught a lot of fish this year; a lot of "muhaha" carnage on all species. But I couldn't believe how good it felt to see & hear my daughter (along with Marty's daughter) squeel with delight while catching herring in the bay.
I'm looking forward to the day when these two girls run the boat & gaff our fish while Marty & I sit back and sip margaritas.

Had to be my sons first Halibut . It was a little chicken about 15 lbs. Might as well have been 200lbs ,he had a blast , and so did I.
The other ,was my best friend getting a 35 lb nook. The infuence of that fish is far reachng. This friend just bought his own 21ft N.R.Sea hawk. I got him hooked. id. painter

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
I had a 7' Sixgill Shark hooked up and had to get um next to the boat to grab my leader below the diver as to not lose the diver.
No, It had no blue, think if it was it would have sawed through the salmon leader a whole lot quicker. Oh yeh, Keta landed a mad as heck Tuna bird, got tangled up with a Tuna Feather with the wing some how. They don't make very good surf boards at 7 knots. But after the release he was as good as new.

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I am hoping to make lots of good memories with her while she still thinks I'm cool to hang out with. She's almost 6 now, so what do I have, another 6 or 7 years?

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Great pic, Mark, reminds me of when our youngest was that age, and we went down to Oaks Bottoms and fished for bluegill and crappie. Priceless times, and pics.
Since I do not own a boat, I would have to second Kieth's first Halibut. Being there and being a part of that memory will last a lifetime.
Peace, Tom

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Lots of great fish this year. 160 tuna over the side and 10 wonderfull days fishing them. Salmon became pretty routine and though Halibut fishing was slower than I would have liked, I still got into them. Caught and ate my first Columbia springer this year. Lots of great adventures and successful trips. The best fish though was when Joey (my first mate) hooked and fought a big Chinook, while mooching, all on her own from rigging to the boat. She was perfect on handling the fish and after three long runs she had it on its side coming to the boat. With its last gasp, it parted the tough line, about 10' from the net (maybe less) The magnificent fish recovered slowly as we watched in disbelief, and swan away...eventually. Shell shocked, she wanted to know what she did wrong or could have done better. Anyone who knows me understands that I can be VERY vocal occasionally. I was so proud of her...there was not a single thing I could have or would have changed in the way she handled that fish. There must have been a weak spot in the tough line (fray?) and that she fought it to that point without breaking it off was a testiment to her excellant handling. I would loved to have landed it for her but the fun she had and the sense of pride we both had from her efforts made that "lost" fish the highlight fish of the year, for me. Next year we will get her another big fish. Til then she will have to settle for her 27#er and the memory of one much bigger! No fish is as wonderful as the people we share them with.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Well,
I'm a little embarassed but what with a 15 month old I really did not get out on the ocean at all!! this year. My mother-inlaw did baby sit for a few random days over the year. It made feeling "dialed in" really tough but I did land an 18# winter on 8# test while jig fishing. The boys on the bank were very kind as it did take me a while to bank the fish. Also one day I got free to work some fast water on the Clack with the same 8# rig and a black 1/8 ounce jig. I figured I'd catch some early summers that were spooked by the big springers coming in. When the bobber went down I was ****ed because I thought it was "rock on". Well a 26# hen leaped up and when it landed I swore I heard my line snap, but no...the fish was still on. I glanced at my watch, just playing, checking to see how long I could keep the fish on. 58 minutes later a stranger helped by slipping his net under her. We both were stoked. I offered him a swig of my single malt scotch, (being as I walked into his hole and he said "sure there's room for two.") 58 minutes later he still had not taken another cast. We finished off all the scotch and just relaxed. My arm and shoulder were cooked. Great day!

I will bet $100.00 when that little girl is grown and has children of her own this special day with DAD is one she will never forget. She will tell them about that day when the herring came in vast numbers and size, monster herring by the buckets full!
Remember well for we only pass this way once.

First trip to the pile with my wife and I got a halbi 58 inches long and she got a 45 incher. It was a great way to start the season. We boated many Salmon this year and the biggest was 38 inches long. The best thing is that my wife just loves HER boat. I think its great that she lets me use it.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Well, it wasn't on a boat, and I ended up handing the pole off, but this was my absolute best day of fishing ever.
We were all up at Bonneville for the day just before Tanner Creek closed. My 8 yr old nephew hadn't ever caught anything larger than a small perch out of Hagg lake. Now, my brother isn't exactly a fisherman. Actually, as Tuna Tom put it perfectly, he's a hammer head. My nephew on the other hand got the fishing gene. Everytime I have taken this kid fishing, he catches something. Well this time was no exception.
We were fishing for Steelies, so we were trying all sorts of different things. Finally toward the end of the day, just after the sun got off the water, my nephew asks if we shouldn't just give it up for the day. I'm just getting ready to say 'Yeah buddy, I think we've been skunked this time.....' WHAM!!!!! This thing hit my little purple fly like a freight train. I set the hook and handed the pole over to my nephew. Ofcourse Grandma started screaming at me to "hang on to that boy, it looks like he's going to get pulled right in!!!" It was complete pandemonium except for my nephew. I've never seen the boy so intensely concentrated on something. It was like he and I were in our own little world with the fish.
So I bent down close to his ear and gave him a little coaching on how to bring the fish in. Just little things like, "if he wants to run just let him but keep some pressure on him etc..." Somehow he was able to follow all the directions I gave him and ignore all the hooting and hollering of his dad and grandma. Finally, 20 minutes later, the boy and I were backing up the bank with a ver worn out 9lb steelie on the end of the line. Parker even bonked the fish! Then he stood back with his mouth gaping open mumbling something about 'That fish is almost as big as me!!!!..But I kicked it's ***!!'
Now here is the funny part. My brother hooked into one a few minutes later and the first thing out of my nephews mouth is, "DAD keep that rod tip UP or you'll loose this one TOO!!!" I just about died laughing!! Right about then, my brother let his rod tip go down, the line snapped and he lost yet another one.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Nicest fish aboard the sled would have been Wildhawgs Hali. Can't remember the measurement but it was over 50".
Best fish on Rotsa Ruck would have been a thirty six pound Chinook.
It wasn't the fish that made the year for me though.
It was the company! Thanks to all that shared the water with me this year!
Wild hawg
Threemuch
BaitBoy
Hoggemin
SKSpawner
Keta
Skein
DipSeaDiver
Chummer
Chinook_Hunter
Waterdog
Just a list off those who fished from one of my boats this year. Didn't include the Salty Dogs who had me aboard their boat; thanks to all of you also.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Greg's post remings me how thankfull I am for all the rides I got this summer, and all the new Salty Brutha's and Sista's I met.
What a great season, and thanks to all!
Great 'But's with Fishplay and Mr. Fisherman, outstanding TUNA! with Nancy onboard the Sea Jypzee, fantastic Halibinook, Ling, and bottomfish with my Buddy Brad (Uglygreen),
A great, if fishless trip with Robalo Bill, and I'm sure I'm leaving somebody out!!
High points would have been my 45" 'nook with Brad, 53" and 50" 'But's with Ray and Greg, 26 TUNA! with Nancy (including a pile on rods and handlines for my son Isaac), and triple limits (Halibut, Chinook and Ling's) for both my son and I with Brad.
What a great year!!!
Thanks again everybody
Oh yeah, and last but not least--a big shout out to my friend Depoe Bay Dan for all he did for me and my friends on the dock at Depoe Bay. Dan, you are THE MAN!!!!!!!
WHEEEAAAHHHH!!!!!!!

It was a great year all the way around. My buddy Alton & I caught our 1st Tuna-Thanks to Pilar & Gregotis. Salmon fishing was great this year for us. There is this one trip that comes to mind, we took a couple others with us out to the ranch and limited real quick, so we came back to the pile for some chinook. One of the guys we took with us, you got to understand he means well but if something is going to go wrong he will have something to do with it. On this trip he grab the pole out of the holder up on the back deck & almost fell out of the boat which I'm sure would have happened if he wouldn't of let go of the pole. I looked out the back and saw the flasher going across the top of the water, so I yell at Al, go to the right, then the left and for the next 2-3 minutes we are in hot pursuit of this fish and pole and we were doing figure 8's, circles, squares;we tried netting it a few times until the net got caught up in the pump. That's about the time we remembered the other 3 poles we were trolling with, while we were doing the circles,& squares. We started reeling in lines & bringing up downriggers and guess what? On one of the downriggers comes the poles which we didn't notice until the tip went through the pully and broke off,but Al's catlike reflexes grabbed it before it went to the bottom and the fish was still on.About 30 min.later,I'm not sure what happened but the downrigger that this guy is running all of sudden starts free spooling down at what looked like a hundred miles a hour and what does this guy do,he pushes the little green button and "pop" breaks the cable like it was 3lb fishing line. We did finally limited out on Chinook but it took some work.Trips like these make you really appreciate the good days. Can't wait till next year !

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Best fish was a 51 lb. Halibut caught out of Winter Harbor BC, my first Hali ever, followed by a 110 lber (60.5 incher) one hour later while anchored. Good thing I read ifish and took notes!
My buddy Brian caught the biggest ling (for the season) that trip 32 lbs. and the biggest Chinook (for the season) 30 lbs.
Thanks everyone here for helping to make that trip happen with "how to info"!!!
Read about the trip on the 8/27/2003 (two)posts ,"Let's talk fishin holes".

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
That is hard to narrow down to just one fish, or trip. The highlight would have to be 23 tuna with Nancy on the Sea Jypzee. She is a great captain and really loves them tuna At first we were all so excited by the screaming drag we were all yelling FISH ON!!!! By the end of the day it was all of us looking at each other and saying oh NO!! not another one And Nancy the whole time telling us to hurry and get the lines back in the water She flat worked us till we were ready to drop, and I loved every single minute of it. That is only a small part of what was so great about fishing with Nancy. It was getting to spend time out on the ocean with someone that really loves and respects the big blue, and of course meeting alot of the Salty Dogs.

and like wildhawg said can't say enough good things about DepoeBayDan, that man can fillet a fish and cark the tuna like nobody's buisness.
I got to know many others just by reading the board and hope to meet several of you in the future.
It has been a great year and is still going strong with the fall chinook and still to come winter steelhead. Nancy I owe you a trip down the Siletz and we will hook up for this, hopefully I can return the favor and get you into the fish a 10th as good as you did us virgins
Thanks to all for sharing your wisdom and the great story's that male me laugh out loud sitting in front of the screen and my wife looking at me like I am an idiot
Take care everyone

I can't narrow it to one. The top two contenders are an 82# butt at the rockpile. The other was a silver that struck multiple times with my bait in view and my rod in hand. It would swim out of sight then come in like a freight train and strike again. Final run, it came straight from under the boat, peeled out about 30 yds of line before I set the hook. Great learning experience about what the rod looks like when the fish is doing a hit, shake and run vs a hit and keep.

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
I had a number of great trips this year out on the big pond, the best being in August when I finally broke my jinx and got a nook over 40 lbs. But I had two other trips that were pretty good too. On one, a neighbor caught her first ever nook and the other was just a couple of weeks ago when one of my best friends daughters (who is 13) caught her first ever nook. I just like to watch their excitement!
It has been a season of firsts and we have had a lot of fun fishing this year with family and friends. SD

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
I guess my best two fish for my boat was the first Salmon I put on her this year and the last. I have had some great adventures in the salt this year. I crossed the bar 16 times and only once did I have trouble finding anything that would bite. I have limited experience and with my jet sled, I am limited on how far I can go and what I can chase but I made the best out of it.
The first fish of the year I was so excited all I could think about was getting it in the box and getting my line out to get another. The last fish I enjoyed every head shake, run, jump, and flip she could give me. Absorbing the moment if you will. All the trips in between I shared with family and friends. I took a couple of ocean virgins out for the first time and got them into tons of Salmon and Bottomfish. Next year I will venture out a little further and head past the pile in hopes of reaching the ranch. Man I love this stuff

Re: Best fish on yer boat, 2003
Every fish I catch is the best fish I've caught until it is in the boat ...
The only fish that isn't the best fish of the year at that particular point of
doing the catching are the ones that get away ...
However, a couple of memorable fish this year:
A 20+ lb. yellow eye that the fish biologist figures was over 120 years old ...
A couple of TUNA! that went over 35 lbs. on a day that we had a 22lb. average for
over 900 lbs. ...
Couple of 30+ lb. salmon that were full of BIG, mature eggs ...
The three halibut that I got from the charter deck hands for giving them salmon eggs/
TUNA! fillets ...
I think the three halibut were the most fun because it was a sharing experience
with my fellow dock mates!!
-assAssin- (I just *love* to troll, troll my boat ...)

Here is the nicest coho I landed this year, 14.6#'s landed me 15th place out of just over a thousand weighed fish in the Everett Coho Derby.
