Default Story #1- "Lady in White"

Well, as requested, I thought I would share my first story for the Salty Dogs. I figured that since I am still quite new to the board, the story should be about someone quite new to the ocean.

It was quite a typical summer day with 12 eager passengers ready for us to get them into some salmon. As it was still early summer, the weather was not unusual for the time. You know the type, a dense mist, not quite fog, but the type that gets you wet through and through. No wind, but a nice sized swell on the water. With this weather, there's not a horizon line in sight, to the detriment of some aboard.

One newly married couple is spending part of the honeymoon with us, partaking in a slammin' salmon trip. Now I could be wrong, but the gent seem quite enthused, but the lady didn't seem all that thrilled, even before we left the dock. Couple this with the fact that our valiant lady is wearing what appears to be slacks, and a cashmere white sweater, and I just don't see a die-hard fisherwoman here. Perhaps the groom was a little enthusiastic for her?

Well, fishing was a tad bit slow, so some of the passengers had time to think of other things, like the swell, lack of a horizon line, the smell of diesel with no wind, and myself, the deckhand, dutifully cutting bait.

As it was quite damp out, or heroine has donned one of those green vinyl/rubber Stearns type raincoats. I'm sure you're familiar with the type; rubberized, little hood with a built in brim/visor on top? She stood on the back deck, directly behind the wheel house, not moving a hair. Zipper pulled full up, so the only thing showing was her eyes, and a small part of her face that surrounds them. Just sort of slowly rocking, trying to time it to the swell.

By this time, the fishing had picked up. Not great, but putting one in the box here and there. Our heroine didn't seem too interested in tending her rod. I pointed this out to the groom who was excitedly reeling in a fish "for her". "Oh, she'll be fine, probably a little tired", he said.

Several minutes later as I looked at our blushing bride, I noticed that the color around her eyes was starting to get closer and closer to the shade of the rain jacket. I pointed this out to Mr. Fisherman, but it was waved away without a second thought.

It was only about 5 minutes later that I saw a spectacle that I will probably never see again. I turned to see our lovely lady frantically grasping the zipper, and attempting to tug it down. I say ATTEMPTING, because she in fact was not having much luck at actually moving it at all. Tug..Tug..TUG,TUG,TUG...Yank, TUG, YANK,YANK...I motioned to her husband who leaped across the deck to help. At the precise time that new groom got within 3 feet, an orangish-white, upside down waterfall shot up past our heroines eyes, hit the bill of the slicker and proceeded to direct its energy outward, and onto the chest of the onrushing husband.

As the remnants slid down and away, our lovely lady grasped at the zipper one final time, and apparently fully lubricated now, the zipper gently slid open. White cashmere no more.

In my opinion, the husband to our heroine probably will never own a salt water boat.

My apologies to any that have been offended.

Fortunately, or unfortunately, there's more where that one came from.

Mike

Thanks for that, Mike. You know, of all the infinite kinds of stories one can tell about the ocean, there are none quite like puke stories.

So what ports did you fish out of in those days?

Great story Mike.

I really have to respect the way the groom didn't allow his attention to be pulled away from fishing until it became a 'truly serious' situation. There was nothing he could do prior to then anyway, right?
Welcome!

Mark,

Back in "the day" we worked out of Garibaldi. My dad ran the boat, and I worked the deck.

Prior to that, we had a salmon trawler that our family ran out of Newport, named the Bonnie Jean. Before that, a dory named the Meerschaum.

That was funny! I was drinking water and swallowed down the wrong pipe. You should really warn people these stories are going to be so funny! Cashmere sweater is one thing but when you nearly lose a mouthful of water on a $2G computer that is an entirely different thing  Welcome to the Salty Dogs Nalu, don't forget to go to the TA meeting in Noverber!
