Default Colt M1911A1

I have been looking at buying a 1911 for a while now. My dad really wants to get a Colt 1911 Gold Cup. I think that I want to get one too, and I have been watching for prices on them. I would prefer a Kimber but they are way out of my price range. I have seen that $800-$1000 is about the going rate on the Gold Cup.

What do you think? Does anyone know what a 70 series or 80 series gold cup is worth? Has anyone seen or heard of a good deal lately on one?

I'm not sure about ALL Gold Cups, but I know that some Gold Cups (and maybe all?) have been made with lightened slides (metal cut out in some areas) to facilitate them shooting "match" ammunition more reliably.

I've been told they run the risk of fracturing using full power ammo.

As I said, I don't know if this holds true to all versions of the Gold Cup or not, but one that I had was this way.

I had a series 70 awhile back and it functioned well with any type ammo I put through it. I had this Gold Cup a good 20 years ago, so they could well have changed the makeup by this time. But if not, get one and you'll be glad you did.

Yes, well mine functioned with "all" ammo too. (be sure you adjust by putting in heavier or lighter springs, depending on what you're shooting)

But I had a gunsmith point this out to me with the caution I mentioned.

My slide never cracked using heavy ammo (even though I prefer hardcast 200g SWCs) but I was cautioned...

Humm, that's interesting. I have not heard that before. What about the government models, I assume that the slides are not lightned for the reason that the gold cup was. I see that most government run around $800 and the gold cups are not much more. Any experience with the Colt Government models?

I have a slightly modified Kimber Stainless TLE II and I love it. I bought it with 3 Wilson Combat magazines and a box of ammo for $1000.94, brand new.

No, it was just the Pre-Gold Cup "National Match" models and (at least some of) the Gold Cups.
