for god's sake, get out of the way.
We were down by the mouth of the willie this afternoon and witnessed yet another nervous moment between a boat and a ship heading out into the CR. This very large ship kept on the horn but this guy never made any attempt to move whatsoever. The ships hull passed within 20 feet of him. It's outragous. It;s just a fishing hole, and not worth risking life or 600.00 fines. Do the right thing and allow the guys to do there job. Move when you should move, period.
Be safe out there.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
We were about 1/2 mile up and witnessed the same thing. Man there was a lot of barge/ship traffic this afternoon. I can't believe how many people wait until the last possible minute to pull anchor and get out of the way.

Maybe his battery died or he couldn't get his boat to start. I have had that happen to me but not when a large ship is coming.

Saw that as well. Real fun in that small area with 2 large cargo ships coming at each other and all those little boats in between them.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
It looked like the Coast Guard gave a talking to one of the fishing boats for not moving for the barges, they were pretty close as well....twice!
Not a chance I want to take, there is not a fish out there worth losing your life over. It only takes a couple of minutes to move out of the way.
Be safe!

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
We were right there also and have a picture of how close he was if you would like me to post it as a WHAT NOT TO DO! These 2 guys knew it was there and just watched it go by them. They in fact anchored right in the wake of one ship that just went up ahead of them then the second ship came down within feet of them less than 10 minutes later.
The coasties came down and talked to about 5 boats including us 30 mins prior to that to let us know they were on their way down river and to keep an eye out for them as we might need to scoot over some. Very nice of these guys to come down and let people know even though we were already keeping an eye out before that as we knew we were close to the channel. We would have been fine but ALWAYS better to be too move when you didnt need to rather than not move when you should have!

Yep...that's the guy! I was fortunate enough to have spent the day with GBS, and with Redbull as our neighbor. Saw it happening, and kept thinking, he'll move soon....he'll move soon...he'll....he's not going to move! Thought for sure I was going to get to see a ship crush a small boat.

People like shouldn't be on the river. I have seen that happen too many times before. Seen morons pushing off the side of a barge up at Dodson about 10 years ago because he wouldn't move.
That ship should have dropped anchor on that boat while it was going by. (not implying that someone should commit a crime or cause harm to someone, just a joke)

We were just below St Johns bridge, and while I don't remember seeing this guy, I was surprised at peoples reluctance to move when those ships were laying on the horn.
I love the swipe marks on the ship directly next to the guy fishing. You'd think you'd look at those and reconsider.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
There must be something wrong here. No one in their right mind would stay anchored when a ship like that bear down on them. Perhaps the guy is physically sick or something. If not, then he's a danger to himself and to those around him.

Unbelievable -
If he was having mechanical trouble you think he would be waving his arms like crazy and using his horn or ??
If I witnessed that I would motor over afterward and check the situation out. Kids on board = a quick call to the authorities.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
New boat from the boat show (isn't that a new four stroke hanging off the transom) plus a first time owner whose 42 or so ("I don't HAVE to take the boater training") plus the great Saturday weather (first or second time the hull got wet) equals a new swipe mark for the tanker and another casualty statistic for the year. His encore will probably be up a Bonneville where he'll tie off to the stern to pull up his anchor.
What would actually be worse is if he'd been doing this for 10 years.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
I dont think I can see the numbers from that pic because of the angle but I do think the coasties were notified by the ship. One guy was on the bow watching and yelling. Then there were 3 guys on the stearn of the ship one of which had a radio or cell phone or something and was talking to someone about the boat as he was pointing to it while talking.
Those that think something must have been wrong or the guy was sleeping, ect......Thats just not the case this time. They moved in behind one ship pretty much right in its wake. That ship went on up river and was passed by this ship. The guy was there no more than 10 mins probly more like 5 before this ship was right on him. They were just sitting in their boat talking. He did look a bit shocked when the ship was RIGHT next to him but it looked to us like there were some "your number one" types of hand gestures between the boat and the ship. These guys didnt move right after that either. They kept fishing for awhile.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
great pics. you guys all thought I was probably exaggerating. God it was close, and I could see they knew the ship was passing, and could care less to move. No motor problems either, they fired up later and left. At least take a paddle and try to move over even if your motor dies, do something. Amazing how many more ifishers were right down there along with us. You guys all need stickers so I can swing over and say hi.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
Dude's got a kicker, so I wouldn't buy the "dead motor" excuse.
If he got dumped in the water I don't think I would even bother to fish him out. He's obviously intent on suicide, so why stop him?
The bad part is that the CG and the river pilot would have hours of paperwork and Q & A to deal with if the ship clipped that mongoloid.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
Those pictures are as unnerving as it was watching it in real time. I know if that was me out there, I'd be working mighty fast to take action. As far as I could tell, they looked might casual. I was on the far side of the ship, had come around its stern after it passed by, and waited to see if the boat popped out of the prop stream! Had my radio in hand, ready to call in a blenderized mess.

That's cool if you want to, but for pete's sake people...if you do, and a ship starts blowing on the horn before he gets to you, he's not doing it because he's scared for HIS safety!!!

Wow! That guy has no idea how close he came to buying the farm. Husker is exactly right. Those big ships draw enough water to suck a small fishing boat completely under. Just getting close can be fatal. Can you imagine if his anchor line got caught in that big prop?
Even boater safety classes assume a certain amount of intellegence and common sense. That seems to be missing here.....

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
I don't have a single fishing hole on the C.R. or the Willey that I anchor in, that would require me to get out of the shipping lane. I came close enough to a ship and death  windsurfing down at Clatskanie about 15 years ago. To me its just not worth a fish.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
Nobody is that stupid. I don't think stupidity had anything to do with it.
I like the "New from the Boat Show" theory.
This guy obviously didn't have a clue. It is truly amazing that you can plop down a few bills and be fully qualified to toss anchor on the Columbia River.
If we're lucky, the guy will read this post and realize he needs to study up before doing something like that again. If not, we need to politely instruct him in the danger of doing what he did next time we see something like this.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
That fine fellow could have caused a shipwreck. Looks like $100,000,000 in ship and cargo. How about getting 400,000 gallons of bunker C fuel, hydraulic fluid, and lube oil dumped in the river? Throw that guy in jail if he was indeed in the channel. The ships crew seemed to think he was.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
I never saw movement inside the boat when that ship was passing by...but saw someone moving about later on. Might have been asleep...but how could you have missed all the horns?!? That ship was the second ship through that area in a 5 minute span. Guess I'll have to wait a little longer to get to see a ship scuttle a fishing boat.

Re: for god's sake, get out of the way.
Stupid people have too many safety nets in place to keep them alive. I'm sorry that this reply isn't the norm. But I say let the guy get crushed or swamped! Apparently he never had parents around to teach him any life lessons or he is a real idiot with a big "I own the river ego". Let the media put out the word that you do not have right away over these large ships by making an example out of him.
