Ok first trip to the island
So on sunday i am going to sauvies and i am going to draw on the westside. What do i need to know first how to get there from the SI bridge, and then how the drawing process works, and should i bring a cart to carry decoys, also is it possible to hunt w/o a dog or boat?

You can check out a map of the island at here but basically you just go across the bridge and follow Sauvie Island Road until it dead ends at the Westside. Be sure to be in line at least 1 1/2 hours before the published shooting light time or you will not get in the drawing. As for the drawing itself, everyone in line (in time) gets to draw a chip from a bag and the lowest chip number gets first blind selection. A cart is nice but you can pack dekes on your back too. A dog is optional but of course you are subject to the water depth which only comes from experience.
It really helps to hook up with someone that's been out there a few times when you're getting started. You might ask and see if any IFISHers would let you tag along. Hope that helps.

Re: Ok first trip to the island
I have only been once, but I listened and learned prior, and got lots of help from Adjhunt.
Just go left at the fork (west) you just go through the gate and park in line, the ODFW guys walk the bag of chips down the line, you pull chips, and then once everybody is done the number 1 chip drives to the ODFW booth, and then the rest of the guys just pull up there or walk and the ODFW guys call numbers in low to high order....because all chips wont be draw, then you pick a blind, drive to the appropriate parking lot and walk out to the blind, there are markers that you follow and markers in each of the blinds. I would take the care for sure, and you definitely hunt without a dog.

Re: Ok first trip to the island
You might want to look here before commiting to the Westside on Sunday: http://www.dfw.state.or.us/resources...8-09/index.asp
I'm heading out there as well, and MIGHT be able to show you how it works if you wanna hunt with us. I've got 3 guys going including me, and 1 "maybe"...if his wife will let him. : ) If the last guy falls through you can jump in with us and I can show you how it works.
Either way, you're going to want to go to the Eastside. Until the ice melts on the West, it's going to be pretty bad over there.
Anyone agree with me or am I sending this guy in the wrong direction?

I also think SImudBogger should give me the GPS coordinates to his favorite duck spots and the phone numbers to any private land owners that allow hunting on their property!
Can we make it 3 in a row!?

Re: Ok first trip to the island
If you want to go to the westside on Sunday, I think it will be a disappointing first trip to the Island. Get to the eastside early and you will do a lot better!!
It will take the ducks awhile after the ice melts for them to use the westside again.
If possible try and hook up with someone who has hunted out there a lot.
And if you could go out with steelhead22 you would learn lots about it out there, and have a great time. He's a good guy!
Good luck!
