Default Christmass/New Year in So. California

What kind of offshore fishing is available in the Southern California or Baja area the first of January? I have to decide if I want to go down there for a two week job. Boss said he would spring for airplane tickets and a trip to Disneyland for the family, if I take the job, but fishing would be a bonus.

Umm... I can't tell you but I could show you in person!

Serious- don't know about Northern Baja, Cabo is hot for Striped Marlin and the Dorado should be around still in Jan. Not sure about the Tuners in Jan. March they are thick but the Bills are gone.
My bro is down there right now and he's been there during that time I can ask him.

I think Diego is pretty dead, water's cooled off. I know it was dead in March when I was there. Not sure how far South you need to go to find the fish in Jan. I've got the book that Gregotis was asking about though (Baja Catch). It should cover the seasons/fish. I know it covers all of Baja both sides.
You making the TA meeting Friday? I'll bring it if so.

Yes Father Keta! But will they let mom on the rides? Not sure REAL Sheep are allowed in Dizzyland! Maybe if Mary was there it would be OK. (Get it? Mary, little lambs  )

PS- haven't I seen this somewhere before?

San Diego to Ensenada is very slow in winter. Have to keep going south into real Baja.

GO! You would be insane to not go! That time of year it is so rainy and yucky here. Can I be your daughter... or your sister?????

Call a travel agent and ask questions. My folks went several years with their motor home and fished from their zodiac. But they were further south when they stopped.

Good luck!

Keta:

The ocean is dead during the winter in So. Cal. Unless the sport fishing fleet gets an early run on live squid for bait. If live squid is around and avalible for bait then the resident spiecies of fish turn on and bite.

Jan. was traditionally rockfish time, but I think they shut it down. The sport boats probably just fish sculpin/whitefish/calicos in close and shallow. I'd rather go to Magic Mountain than that after Disneyland.

I believe the San Quintin area still has good yellowtail fishing that time of year (about 4-5 hours from the border). You could also make a trip to Bay of LA for yellowtail, it is not that far from the border (@ 8 hours).
good luck,
steve

I was on a business trip to Santa Ana in March one year. One of the guys (local) talked me into taking a day off and getting a charter out of Diego. It was cold and cloudy so we went Thurs eve and tired to find long johns so I wouldn't freeze on the water.
Ever try to find long johns in March in South Cal?
Ended up with a sweat pants/shirt and it's a good thing. They had a real Gully Washer that Friday while we were on the boat. Record rainfall in Diego. The trip home to LA was not fun.
Anywho- we went out on an old WWII PT boat for Yellow tail. Ya right! - It was way to cold of water to start, then the wind and rain came. This PT boat was 70 feet if I remember correctly but we ended up just barely outside the harbor tucked in behind some rocks. You could see the bottom in some places we were fishing.
We were catching bottom fish on live anchovies. Some of the folks were pretty excited about that. The bottom fish were mostly about 6-8 inches long, all kinds of different little orange guys. I think the trophy of the trip might have been a 10 incher.
It was fun anyway, first time I ever live baited. Just fly lining those chovies was fun in and of itself.
