Default Tuna Fishing this Weekend CR

This is a preliminary post only to see if there is any interest in someone else sneaking out with me for 1 last Tuna trip this Saturday.
The ocean going to need to be pretty flat, right now it looks good all week until Saturday when it's predicted to be 3 and 7 15knots out of the west.
The Miss B. has the weekend off, and I don't feel like getting beat up again with the weather
or "The Other Boat".
I think I have a crew, but I could use 1 good deckhand.

We (Jen, Gary and I) are considering an Astoria TUNA! venture as well for Saturday, weather permitting on 'Pilar'. Would love to be in the parade with you guys ... Yon't to?

Hi Tom, I am willing to serve as a deck hand, bait boy, gofer or whatever you need. Not much Tuna experience except for the knowledge you and Mel gave me. Willing to work and learn.

Mike, that sounds good. We might have to chat about it. Saturday night, maybe Friday too.

Anyone else want in on the TUNA! fishing lesson? Let's make a floatilla out of it. This is prolly the last dance so be there or be regrettin it all winter.

Minaki, if we go with you on your boat, I'll show you the secret weapon in the war on TUNA! If not then hit Fishermans and get the Cedar plugs that look like mackeral. Blue green with the bars and the blue green orange. That was red hot on Swordfish I and we only had one on board, it was a miracle it did not get ripped off or destroyed. Do you use teaser strings, splashers and diver boards?

Mel, any details about your close encounter of the Billfish kind? What were you using, how far back and how fast? Also any details about where you fished, waypoints and distance from the dock etc, so I can do a float plan and estimate fuel use, transit time.

Arrrrrrggggghhhh... I'm stuck at the Farm and you guys finally decide to come up North and visit! :depressed:

John- that green mackeral cedar is HOT! I lost one and busted one, haven't been able to replace yet. Tom- that's the plug I been talking about. Haven't seen the blue/green/orange one but sounds cose to what I call the "rainbow". Last weekend the cedars only got a couple fish though, brooms early and then the clones just turned on hot (se below).
As far as the zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz....snap fish, it was on the long rod, 100 yards or so back, normal 6 1/2 knots. My bad.... I don't know what the lure was. I had a blue/white cedar on there but the crew musta swapped it out cause all my cedars out were in the "used gear" rack when we got done. Unless the crew remembers what they changed out, I can't tell ya.

As far as numbers etc, here's the info I posted from "Weather Vortex". Tom was there and knows where we were fishing (all my waypoints are in the boat chartplotter).

The water and the fish are still there at the CR Pilar. We had water over 61, a fair number of jumpers, and even a little blue water still. Not the bright/light blue earlier but more blue than green in places. A lot of that crystal clear emerald green water too. Warm water and fish from 30-40 miles off the beach. We were 35 miles off the CR at the farthest Saturday (124 57). Lots of Porpoise out there this trip too. Haven't see any of those since early August. The jumpers didn't seem to be schooled up like earlier, just individual fish jumping kinda spread out in an area.
The fish still had small bait fish in em too (2-3 inches). Tried one of the small hoochies but it didn't seem to be the ticket.
We tried throwing Sardines (dead) when we hooked up a couple times and once when a jumper was just off the boat. Got picked up and hit 3 times and hooked up for a fes seconds the first time. Just couldn't stick one though on the bait. Not even sure it was Tuners grabbing the bait, coulda been Blues. It was too choppy to see the sharks out there.

Contrary to the posts made about switching over to fish vs squid baits this late, I had better luck on Tuna Clones last Saturday than I've had all year. Zuchini, Mex Flag and the hot one was a Tiger. One of the crew brought the tiger, I hadn't seen that color before. Bright red/orange back with black stripes and a bright yellow bottom half.
My 85 foot hand lines off the corners were also doing better than the long rods. I tried to run longer hand lines (130's) early and got a few fish but they kept picking up the rod lines where they went in the water. Wind and waves were working real well for tying the gear all up. I switched back to my standard 85 footers on the corners and no more tanlges.

Anywho... the old tried and true methods and gear seemed to be the trick on Saturday. Purp/Black and root beer brooms early, one of Petes homemade hoochie with purp and back feathers under it. Brighter clones after the sun got high. Cedar plugs in blue/white and mex flag got a few too. Oh- and a hex head with that weird color hoochie skirt Englunds has. It's like a mex flag under but with brownish purple on the top layer of skirt. edsr said it's worked real well for him too. It was really hot one day early in the year.

My theory about having to fish farther back on rough water days got blown this trip too. This is the first time I've been out in the snot when the hand lines picked up the majority of the fish. Even got one or 2 on a fairly short 50 footer down the center.

And of course...... I got SPOOLED by somebody (name unkown and sight unseen)."

Calm waters/tight lines! - Mel

Pilar,

Plan on going on my boat if you will, I could use the help, my crew wants to go next year instead.
Your talking about the green Mackeral as opposed to the blue Mackeral. The green version has tiger stripes on top but I don't remember any orange, it could have. I know I have at least one of the Green. But scads of other popular colors.
I had only one hit on the green plug last week and that was on a stand up rod that hit as we were packing it in.
We has splashers, one fish early on that.
We had divers, also one fish on those and onother fish on a Zuc. Clone handline.
We threw everything we had at um, every color feather and clone and several colored daisey chains.

The only thing we did not try was to remove the divers and splashers which Mel was not fishing any by the way.

I was monitoring the commercials last weekend and they are still fishing and getting pretty good scores.
I think we'll need to guard against running past the Tuna. Think we should fish anything that has a temp brake with signs or anything above 58?
We fished almost to the 125 line last weekend.

Does anyone have room for a Tuna!-holic in the making? I have all the basics down and am as ready and able as any deckhand you could find. I would very much like the opportunity to meet and fish with some more ifishers this weekend. Would be happy to help out on ice and gas. Thanx, and if I don't make it on this trip, the best of luck to you. Luke

You guys are killing me with all this chatter about Tuna slaying. For some reason unknown to myself, I can't seem to stop reading these threads. Gotta boat load of college kids this weekend catching crabs, otherwise I would be begging for a ride myself. I will be attending a TA meeting hopefully in January. Have fun and be safe on the big blue.

Luke it will be okay bud. But it will be more like 9 months. The first show was off Depoe Bay this year around mid to late June I believe. I am sure I'll be down there to give it a go next year and run with the dogs. Best thing to do now is go back to church on Sundays and be a good boy. That's where I will be for the next 9 months.

Kevin, we will eventually cross paths man. I've met a few of your buddies but not you. I am betting we will meet at a TA meeting sometime.

Both you guys have to remember there are support groups available for your affliction.

Tom,
I'm commited to going deer hunting this weekend.
After that I have months of backlogged work around the house to do, in one week.
I hope you can get out. Have fun on your trip to N. Dakota

Tom, thank you for the invite. Can you take 3 people as that was my planned crew on 'Pilar'? The 3rd guy, Gary has not been out this year for TUNA! and he volunteered to wrangle my boat for the trip since I am on crutches.

Let me know when and where to meet. We will bring our toys to the party and will show up with bells on.

Tom- Sturgeon Paul gave me two places to get totes of crushed ice in Astoria. One was "KB", at Pier 1 (first dock area as you enter town from the West). Second one I don't remember the name but it's just behind Burgerville (or Burgerking) before the road splits. He said either one would be willing to sell us totes.

You might want to call him and get a phone number for these places. His phone is 503 861 6070

Oh no! I'm guilty of #10 already this morning! Donna still hasn't figured out what the peculiar smell in the house is. She loves eating TUNA! as much as I like catching it so I should a be alright. Nine whole months?! ...oooohhhh this is worse than I thought.

George, are you going TUNA! fishing this weekend? If so, maybe we could go buy a half tote and I could stow away in it until we get out onto the TUNA! hunting waters? "Yeah, I figured we needed more ice, so I filled up this tote"

I've gotta second what Tom Said regarding Keta. Tireless and intense when it comes to tuna. Lee can fish with me anytime. I know I wont have to bait his hook.
