Default Hard to find tackle

Hi, I spent some of Saturday at Englunds in Newport with Puffin (Big Jon). This was all part of a trip to recover 'Puffin' from the beach cabin where it sat with electrical problems.

Anyway the guy at Englunds, Dean, took the time to dig out his Mustad hook catalog and look up some of our unobtainable favorites. Anyone interested in replacement hooks for cedar plugs or Swordfish hooks let me know and we will organize an adder to the tackle order Englunds do every spring in March.

Dean has graciously offered to add whatever we (salty dogs) want to the order and as a group we can buy boxes of hooks instead of individual pieces. I also asked him about ordering some cedar plugs since the selection and availability is pretty spotty anywhere I can find them now. 4" would be good and some better colors would be good too. TCF 100 feathers (4") are generally unavailable locally and that would be good too. We (Salty Dogs) are known to Dean and Englunds and he is happy to help us get what we need.

Needle eye hooks 10/0, Mustad, tin plated, #3412, box of 100, $34. Other smaller sizes are available according to what I saw in the catalog.

Swordfish hooks, used by Linda Greenlaw of the Hannah Boden out of Gloucester, #7698B, don't know the price or quantity.

Does anyone have any other requests?

Puffin was asking about 8/0 Gamakatsu circle hooks. Does anyone know if they sell them by the 100 pak?

Pilar, when you order count me in for cedar plugs and the TCF 100 feathers. Not sure on the numbers/amount at this time but the total count will be in the neighborhood of 20+ lures. A second thought, for the ease of ordering it might work out beter if you just order for me (5 cedar & 15 feathers) and I will go with your selection. My end of the deal is send money when requested. Penny for your thoughts.

All, this is a long term project. We have until March to make a list. I just wanted you to start thinking about it because ...

1)We need some things and don't want to forget anything. and

2) A large order may give us a little say in what is stocked at this store. It would be hard to ignore a group of customers willing to spend money on fishing gear.

I'd also recommend them adding some Rapala's, around the CD-18 to 22 sizes in assorted colors.

I stopped at Englunds yesterday and was stocking up on some Tuna gear (Never to early) and asked the guy if he had any 3412 needle eye hooks in stock, and he doesnt :depressed:

He told me he had some guys stop in a few months ago and wanted to order a bunch of them and some other hard to get stuff. I asked if it was the group from ifish  and he didnt remember but it sure sounded like this thread.

He tells me they just wrote up their order for spring delivery and it will be going off in the next week. If we wanted to order anything get the word to him within the next week, and their would be no freight added since they had a large shipment coming anyway. While talking to him, he pulls out his catalog and tells tells the 3412 hooks are $82 per 100   I couldnt remember the price on this thread but knew it was a lot cheaper than what he was telling me.

The $82 price quoted was for the short shank hook not the long shank.

I can tell you I am not the guy to be putting this order together, my prices were not nearly as well as the ones mentioned earlier

Pilar,

Any chance you could create a "starter kit" for TUNA newbies? I have a number of clones and handlines tied up but when it comes to cedar plugs and feathers....uh....yeah.

In other words, I'm with Northriver1. Please count me in but tell me what I'm in for.

Thanks, Bud.

An outfit called Inside Sportfishing has the plug hooks in stock, 2 for $3.08, 100 for $79.56.

web page

I've bought from these folks before, free shipping with $50 or more order.

They also have the very best selection of Zukers I have found. Sales guy tells me they are right down the street from the Zuker factory.

p.s. I still prefer to buy from Charkbait overall...

So, Bait O Eggs, we need to talk about your tackle company and how you're going to start selling Salty Dog brand tackle.

You know Tuna virgin kits, including the pink belt, the red dress and shoes and an assortment of basic tackle for longfins. We could sell a similar kit for Halibut fishing and ... well the possibilities are endless.

I'll get back to you as soon as I can get Dean on the phone.

Mark, I hear you about Charkbait but I like to support the local guy if I can. Dean has been pretty good to me and others ... so he gets any business I can give him.

Is this what you had in mind for the beginners? Sort of a complete beginners kit complete with several outfits so you are capable of dressing to the captains taste for the day.

John - If you are going to make an order, Please put me in for (100) 9/0 needle eye hooks and (10) of the double, barbless, stainless ones. I don't get to Englunds very often. Will help to pay shipping, i.e. some gas money.

All you Salty Dogs - As some of you might know Bait'O Eggs,(Roy), has been making plugs and feathers. They really worked last season. Roy has been revising and improving. I saw a sneak preview of some new plugs and lures and these are killer! I think that he might be willing to sell some - ask him about his new stuff.

Hi John, sorry if I sounded like I was trying to steer business away from the locals. I agree about supporting Englunds. I posted that more as an option, if one could not get those hooks easily. There are certain items that I only buy from Englunds, such as marine paint & 3M 5200, seine twine, and misc. commercial-style terminal gear. They also have a great selection of Sevenstrand clones (as you know). Then there are other items that I only buy from the aforementioned web sites. It's always that balance between cost, availability, shipping costs vs driving, how badly you want it, and who you want to support. We have a great old-time (you know, creaky wooden floors) hardware store in Corvallis called Robnett's. Sure stuff costs more than Home Depot, but I always try to give the local shop the benefit first.

Nice for you huys who fish South but won't help us CR boys much. I'd much rather buy local but Newport is not local for me.
I talked to Englunds up here- didn't get anywhere. Maybe I need to find the right guy. I was told (by the Tuna Tackle Guy) he was under orders to not stock cedars any more- they didn't sell. Pretty funny since we bought them out early in the season and then Kamloops had to do a huge Web order to get more.

John- maybe you can put in a word with Dean for us North Coasters?

Hmmm....

Not a lot of lead time to get organized.

I know I dont need $82 worth of needle eye hooks, at the old price I would have been interested in 100 though If somebody wants to split out the 100 I would be interested in 25 for sure or maybe even 50 at the most.

If no interest exist with somebody splitting the box with me, I can just order them as singles online.

Other than that I think I can get what I want for this next years tuna fishing from a local boutique, that specializes in teen fashion.

Roy - I will split a box of needle eye hooks with you. I really only need 30 or 40 but if we can get the lower rate on a 100, I'll take a full box.
9/0 or 10/0 will be fine.

OK, here's the deal. If we can organize by tomorrow noon we can get in on this order. They expect this stuff to be in the store by March 1 2004. They will do other orders for later spring shipments. I'm not sure exactly when the next one will go.

After lunch I can start tallying the orders but do you guys want to try for tomorrow?

Sound off about what you want if so.

Swordfish hooks are #7698B, 10 to a box at $25.50 for 12/0 and down to $13.95 for 7/0. These are not quite a circle hook but are very heavy and curved in. This is what Linda Greenlaw of 'Hanna Boden' uses for longline swordfish using bait on the right coast.

The needle hooks are #3412 at $82 for a box of 100 and are the same ones I looked at a couple of months ago. New catalog is the explanation for the price change.

Zukers? Tuna doubles? TCF100 (4" feathers, not stocked locally), those cool looking metal lures Tuna Tom showed us?
