Default Welcome Aboard Lars (Samson)!

After taking my last load for the night to a storage center in Lincoln City at 10:00PM I decided to bring my PC back and hook it up to see what I've been missing on ifish and check my emails.

The first thread I checked out on Salty Dogs was the Depoe Bay chinook thread. I was going to make a quick reply and I saw "Samson" and couldn't believe my eyes. I read the post and knew it was the Samson (Lars).

For those of you that aren't familiar with Lars or the Samson(s), (his old dog was named Sampson), Lars is part owner of Dockside Charters (the locals call it Dog side Charters) and is owner/operator of the (50'?) Samson here in Depoe Bay.

I have mentioned Dockside Charters and the charter boat's Samson and the Affair a few times on ifish since becoming a member back in February this year.

I have the utmost respect for Lars because he chooses to not cross the Depoe Bay bar when it is extremely rough and closed to other traffic. I've seen him cancel many a trip when some of the others have chosen to go because he chose to not take you out there and beat you up and/or risk safety. He works as hard as anybody and perhaps harder than most at catching you fish. And he has a great boat and is a easy going fella.

Earlier this year I told Lars that Bill Monroe and Rick Martin (LFN) were coming down to do a lingcod surf fishing article with me and I asked Lars if he might be interested in taking us out front for a short trip (approx. an hour) so they could catch them some fresh fillets for dinner in case the rocks weren't producing.

Lars took us out and Bill and Rick shot some pic's of "rock fishermen" on the rocks as Lars took us in close for some close-ups. He then motored us up north a ways instead of just fishing right out front and we caught a bunch of assorted rockfish. We all had a great time and Bill Monroe booked the Samson for opening day halibut. Well, some of you read about that and I believe Lars was the first one back to Depoe Bay and Bill got a bonus glass float that he spotted.

Lars will be a valuable asset to ifish Salty Dogs because of his expertise and his honesty. It was of no surprise to me reading Lars honest report on current chinook fishing out of Depoe. Some business owners would have exaggerated the truth a little bit in hopes of drumming up a little business. In fact I thought it was a bit better than what Lars reported. I asked Loren the skipper of the Affair the other day how he did chinook fishing and he told me he got 3 for 3. Loren was a bit disappointed with that catch because of his success the last two seasons, but one chinook per rod ain't half bad!

Anyway I got to go as I am still moving and working around the clock. But just had to say welcome aboard to a great charter boat captain and person.

Dan

PS> I probably misspelled Samson wrong in the past spelling it Sampson. I believe his previous boat was named Sampson and his newer one is the Samson. I thought I caught a typo in the latest Depoe Bay Beacon but his office help told me it was correct.

Also the reason that some of the locals jokingly call it Dogside Charters is because the owners and skippers are dog lovers.
Probably see Marty down there in a few minutes drinking some of that good dockside coffee before heading out to the tuna grounds.

You scared the pee out of me! I was affraid it was Lars Larson you were welcoming. It's great to have another honest good guy skipper on board. Hopefully Mike on the Blitz has had a good time on here with us, because we've enjoyed his company out on the water.

Welcome, Greg and Otis

Welcome aboard Lars. I hope ya find these folks as helpful and friendly as I have. I enjoy working with them especially while tuna fishing. It's good to have all these extra fishers out there working to find the tuna and they are a great bunch too!

A couple weeks ago I posted about Lars Tuna-Grouper trip and said I would later post a pic. Well, I got busy and never got around to it.

The Samson was out fishing the tug on Sept. 6th for big ling and canaries and assorted rockem' fish when someone on the back deck noticed jumpers. So on went the tuna gear and they picked up a couple longfins at the tug which is approx. 13 miles offshore.

The one on the left is Lars and the other two are customers of his. The gal in the middle is holdind up a big and very old yelloweye. Unfortunately next year there will be no retention on yelloweye. Hopefully that will be changed when they review it in April.

Anyhow, a couple nice surprise tuna on their bottom fish trip.

Dan
