Socks in the Boots
Was having a conversation with my hunting partners and they said something that floored me. Both of them said they only wear one pair of socks in their hunting boots.
Forever as I can remember I have always worn two pair. Perhaps it is the cold or wicking moisture away from my feet, but I always have.
Do you guys wear two pair of socks in your hunting boots and why?

Re: Socks in the Boots
I wear a sock liner and a regular sock only to get the correct fit and not for warmth. My Kenetrek boots would probably keep my feet warm without socks and they are uninsulated.

Re: Socks in the Boots
Thin polypropelene sock liners with a light weight pair of merino wool hiking socks. Seems to work perfect. Ehunter gave me the liner tip a few years ago and it has made a huge difference in reducing hot spots and perspiration problems on long hikes and back pack trips.

Re: Socks in the Boots
When I had boots that wouldn't keep my feet warm, I wore a couple pairs of socks. Problem with that is that your boots no longer fit good (usually too tight) so you can't walk as well and you get less circulation (cold feet, anyways).
Once I found boots that kept my feet warm, I switched to a single pair of socks. Better situation all around.

Re: Socks in the Boots
I wear a sock liner and a pair of merino wool hiking socks. Make sure you spend the money and get a good pair of liners. I bought a pair a few years back for around $4 and they tore my feet up.

Re: Socks in the Boots
I used to wear two pairs but for years now I've only worn one pair of merino wool socks. Works great. I wear boots every day since I work in the woods, and I just don't think there's any advantage to wearing a liner. But it does depend on the type of sock you wear, if it's not merino wool or something else that's comfortable, maybe a liner is a good idea in that case. Or, if your boots are a little big, then two pairs would make sense.

Re: Socks in the Boots
I have a few pairs of the cabelas ultimax wool socks, they are great. Even when wet they keep my feet warm. I found out because my 1 year old new danner pronghorns leak. If i wear 1 pair of cotton socks my feet freeze.

Re: Socks in the Boots
I am another polypro liner plus Merino wool blend sock believer for cold temps. Warm temps still get a liner plus a thin hiking sock.

Re: Socks in the Boots
Quick hi-Jack
Yesterday I was at the Danner Factory Store and they have a good sale on socks right now. 20% off all socks. I picked up 6 pairs of the 23" LaCrosse Wading Socks with slight cosmetic defects for $4.80 a pair. That's about $10.00 off retail price.

Re: Socks in the Boots
I used to wear a poly liner under wool socks but they kept sliding down and would ball up under foot. I now wear just one pair of quality socks and am very happy.

Re: Socks in the Boots
Sometimes I wear 2 pairs but lately just one pair. My boots seem to fit a bit better with 2 pairs though. It just all depends how much walking or sitting I'm doing.

I'll raise you one pair
Super-lightweight polypropylene inner liner
Lightweight middle liner (not sure of the blend)
Heavy outer sock (wool or a blend)
Used to only use two; this 3-sock layering concept was from a hiking class I took in the early 90's; works great for me.

Re: Socks in the Boots
One pair of socks is all I need. I buy the thick boot socks from Costco and those are my everyday wearing socks.

Exactly. At least the wading boots as they are uninsulated and designed to take in water.
I learned as a kid skiing that boots keep feet warm, not socks. One GOOD pair of socks is the ticket to comfort and warmth. I hate spending big money on socks, but for winter activity it's necessary.
Hey I just agreed with Baltz! I need to take my temp. I must be coming down with something.

Same here.
If you buy the right boots that fit correctly why should you need to wear more than one pair of socks?

Re: Socks in the Boots
Spent 23+ years in the Army wearing boots almost every day. Never wore more than one pair of socks. The keys were proper fitted and broken-in boots and good socks. Don't skimp on either.

Make sure you wear something that wicks moisture away or your feet will get cold when you stop moving.

Re: Socks in the Boots
Liner sock and smart wool sock for hunting hiking summer winter snow shoeing I have not had cold feet in years. Really the whole secrete to avoiding blisters hunting or hiking is to let you feet dry out but the liners do help alot.

Re: Socks in the Boots
My dad has always wore liners to keep the blisters down. Me on the other hand have always wore just a quality wool sock in my boots. I like the Danner Pronghorn socks. Good stuff!

Re: Socks in the Boots
Switched to wearing two a few years ago. Quality liner and some good wool socks, usually smartwool or if cold cabelas guide series medium weight. Everyday during the winter I wear smartwool hiking socks and would probably be fine with that hunting but I like the liners and haven't had any trouble with them so I will continue to use them. Biggest thing was finally buying good socks and not the cheapies, do that with all my gear would rather spend the $ one time on good stuff than buy cheap stuff multiple times.

Re: Socks in the Boots
For the summer hunts, and Archery season I wear one pair of Carhartt socks. In rifle season, when it starts to get colder. I wear realtree socks. Thick, and comfortable. In the snow, Sorels, etc.. I wear a pair of Carhartt socks, and then Realtree over them.. Seems to do the trick for me.
