Default 10/22 Question

I bought my son a 10/22 last year. He would like to trick it out. Can he simply buy a 17 HM2 barrel and put it together or is there more to it. He has changed the stock and put a bull barrel on already. That was simple, he did it all himself.

Yes you can re-barrel for the .17 M2 (but not .17 HMR). Most recommend also at least replacing the recoil spring and going with a heavier bolt or bolt handle. The chamber pressures are different, so the moving mass needs to be adjusted for proper timing.

If you really want to get sub .5" accuracy at 50yds, consider a Skeeter, Volquartsen, or Kidd trigger mechanism upgrade set for 2.5lbs or less. It doesn't really matter how good the barrel is if the trigger pulls you off at the last second. That's what chemists call a rate limiting step. Also consider a short bipod and a Pride Fowler Ranging Reticle scope.

As for the 17M2, it is kind of a defunct round. More expensive than the 22lr, limited ammo choices, and not inherently more accurate if you stick to target grade 22lr ammo. Stingers do not group well, but will do for hunting chucks or coons.

I tricked out my 10/22 this year with a Tactical Solutions barrel and a Hogue stock, plus a Skeeter trigger unit. Check out rimfirecentral if you can't sleep.

Have fun, Doc

You don't tell us how old he is but if you will be buying him the ammo, you better tell him to leave it as a 22 or get a job.

He is fifteen and smarter than all of us put together LOL. I have told him the benifits of staying with the 22, but I think the only way is to pick one up at Bi mart and do my own build. If it were me I would do a trigger job. Maybe a barrel and leave it at that. Then work on my shooting skills, but hey I have only been in a combat arms MOS in the Army for 13 years. What would I know LOL. Thanks guys, maybe he will get the hint when I have him read your post.

At the Bi M store, you can buy the Savage .17 for 169.00, bolt action.
maybe cheaper than converting the 10/22, just another route.

I have a .17 HMR (which is considered by most to be a superior round to the HM2) and I prefer to shoot my "built" 10/22 over it.

I would not recommend it...I think that he should either buy a 17hm2 (or 17hmr) or trick out the 10/22 and leave it a 22.

I had the crazy idea to convert my 10/22 magnum into a 17 hmr and after much heartache and additional mods it only functions correctly about 90+% of the time. Needless to say I now have an unreliable converted 10/22 mag into a 17, and a bolt action 17.

There is alot of information online about these conversions so tell him to do some more research.

I did the HM2 conversion. That round is wicked on small critters. I killed a couple Nutria with it. If you want to shoot small game with it, Go for it!

I dumped the conversion because I had already dumped a bunch of money and time into my rifle to get it to shoot sub sonic ammo reliably. With all that was done to my gun it would not work right with the HM2. Since I plan on getting a suppressor for my 10/22 I didnt want to "undo" all the stuff that was already done. I sold the conversion kit.
