Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Last weekend, I was moored in Kingston, WA next to a very interesting boat.
It was built in the mid 1940's and designed by Monk Sr. It was about 40' lomg with a huge open cockpit and massive fish storage areas. It was designed as one of the first sport tuna boats on the West Coast. The original owner was Jim something and he flew hollywood types up for fishing trips. The boat experienced a major explosion at one point that killed one person.
But what I found to be the most interesting part of it's history was this: It was the boat that Jack Nicholson chartered to take the "doctors" from the mental hospital out fishing in the movie "Cuckoo's Nest".
I was wondering if any of the SD's were familiar with this vessel and/or had any stories about it.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Slabquest,
Having done my internship commercial fishing a Dory there in the 70's, what fond memories. A great way to spend my Senior Year summer after grad. from High School.
Having been gone from there since the 70's, I do remember the Jimco. Wish I had some stories to tell. I think if any of the Whalls (spelling) are still there they may remember.
Other than being a member of one of the Finest Charter Boat fleets on the Coast, it was every
bit as proud as Stan Allyns Kingfisher.
There was a handfull of charter offices back then, Tradewinds,Jimco, Sea Trollers and the guy who I rented a slip from had a couple of boats, The Sea Hunter and a smaller Miss Molly...
Tradewinds had a number of boats, Kingfisher is the only one I remember and Stan had a son who ran a new Delta in the late 70's.
Mariner II ran from the Jimco Dock and I remember
the Regard, a nice aluminum 50' + -.
Sea Trollers had the Purple Poodle and another
craft that slips my memory, my best friends in High School were deckhands on those boats for a couple summers. We had some great partys with the
Coast Guard Guys in the Old Sea Trollers Building.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Actually the boat used in the movie "One Flew Over the Coo Coo's Nest" was the Hyak. I believe it was approx. 45'.
After it left Depoe Bay, it became a commercial boat and sunk, if I remember right up north possibly off of the Columbia.
Who knows, if it hadn't sunk maybe Jack Nicolsen would own it these days and make a floating lounge out of it.
I decked on a boat named the Jimco here in Depoe Bay a few years back for a skipper named Chet and heard it was a salmon killing machine but never got to verify that because the ocean was closed to coho fishing from '94-'98 and that's during the time frame when I worked for Chet. We just did the bottom fishing thing.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
The Jimco, well there is a name out of the past....
Someone correct me if I have this wrong, but this is my recolection about the Jimco.
The boat and charter business was owned by a man named Jim Conway. When he got out of the military, WWII, he fooled around with commercial salmon fishing and started one of the first commercial salmon charter fishing business's on the Oregon Coast at Depoe Bay. As I remember he was very successful and had more than one boat when he sold out.
Later in his life he became partners in a fishing tackle wholesale business, I believe. That business still exists in Portland today.
Jim Conway also became a television personality with a fishing show in the 60's called "The Lucky Jim Show." The tag line at the end of the show was, "Jim is a lucky guy, he gets to go fishing for a living." He was kind of a pioneer for sport fishing shows in his day.
He did a few hunting shows back then, but quit doing them as they were not "politically correct" back in those days. He told me that he just had to give in to the pressure of showing hunting on TV.
As I remember one of his favorite things to do was waterfowl hunt and I used to see him at Sauvies Island quite often.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I am sure that's some of the story of the "JIMCO."
Anyone else as old as I am remember "Lucky Jim" and Jimco Charters?

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I was fueling up in Kingston last week and spotted the Jimco as well. I used to fish it once in a while when I lived in Eugene. I slid over and talked to the new owner, an older guy, and he plans on restoring it and running charters in Alaska.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I remember going out on the JimCo back in the 60's when I was a kid. 4 hour charter trips for salmon. I don't know if its the same boat or not, but I remember JimCo Charters. Lots of great times. Didn't Jim Conway drive his motorhome off a cliff on highway 14 a long time ago, or is that just one of those "urban legends".

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I have a signed hardbound book that Jim Conway produced from the late 60's. I don't remember him mentioning Depoe Bay but I will take a look tonight. It would not surprise me, I remember his TV shows, he was quite a sportsman.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Well, now I'm going to have to rent the movie to double check. In my minds eye, the boat in the movie was different than the Jimco. I have a feeling that DepoeBayDan is correct. I'm just surprised the current owner would tell a false "story".
Yes, Conway was Jim's last name....thanks for the additional info guys.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Well, there are some guys out there as old as I am!!!!!
Love2fish, never heard the motor home story about Jim. I do know that he was getting up in years when he hunted Sauvies Island. He just quit coming out there.
A couple things came back to me last night. I'm sure that the business that Jim was partners in was, All Sport Supply, in Portland. Still a major sporting goods wholesaler.
Second, Jim was just a tiny bit overweight, so when he had to chase a fish down the river, or walk a distance, he did a little heavy breathing. You could always hear this on the audio on his television show. To most people who watched the show, Jim became known as "Huff and Puff." It was only ment in good nature.
Jim was a great guy, did a lot of things in his life. I couldn't wait to watch his fishing show every week, when I was a kid. "Jim Conway" was a hero of mine.
"Jim Conway was a Lucky guy, he got to go fishing for a living, most of his life."
Thanks Slabquest, for the memories,
Jerry

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Jim Conway had two sons. One died and the other works as a factory rep for Youzuri out of Washington State. Hearing that name brings back alot of memories both of his show on TV and his ability to catch fish. I used to see him on the lower Deschutes nailing summer steelhead after summer steelhead. I still have one of his books that he wrote. I always liked him. He was always willing to give advice about what he was using. Just one hell of a fine guy in my opinion. I still remember seeing him run that sled of his both on the Deschutes and the Clackamas. I think the sled was a White Water Marine out of Clackamas. don't know anything about if he owned or started JIMCO however.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Wow! This story has opened up a couple of different old recollections.
I caught salmon on the Jimco about 1964. My uncle and his four sons from Iowa joined the four guys from my family, plus a friend, and chartered the entire boat for a four-hour salmon excursion.
The fishing was hot for the very abundant coho. We had 17 of our 20-salmon limit in 2 1/2 hours -- when the fog set in and the skippers decided to head for shore. (No plastic Jesuses in 1964.) :depressed:
My mother, back in the charter office, listened to the radio chatter between the two charter boats. One said, "I think we're north of the entrance." The other replied, "No, I think we're south." That's when the secretary in the office turned off the radio.
As it turned out, we emerged from the fog with the buoy and bay entrance dead ahead.
And thanks for the Jim Conway memories as well. I remember his earlier show, the Outdoor Sportsman, which he did with Doug Lamear in the late 50s and into the 60s, long before the Lucky Jim show. Some of their "adventures" were pretty local and not quite as spectacular as we've gotten used to in newer fishing shows. I remember one in which they sat in an anchored boat in Swift reservoir, dangling single salmon eggs for pan-sized trout.
TWB:
That panting was one of my favorite memories about Jim Conway's shows. The other one was his frequent announcement, mid-steelhead, " . . . that crazy fish!"

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
WOW!! Jim Conway, that is an old Northwest name. I remember back in the 70's on the Cowlitz, Conway and the camera crew were filming a Winter Steelhead trip. All the sleds were just nailing the fish all around these guys. If I remember right, it took them 2 days to get the footage needed. For some reason they just couldn't catch fish that day. I remember too his panting, while fighting fish.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I recall guiding on the Lewis when Jim would fish there. He was among the first guide that I know to boondog eggs, mostly in the slot above Fontana's. Ah, the memories. Jim was indeed killed when his rig left Hyy. 14 at a high rate of speed. Bye Jim.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Does anyone have a photo new or old of this craft that they can post?
Does anyone remember the old wood sail boat that was moured out of Warenton several years back? It said "The Great Bear" ,but in german, on the back. My understanding is this was the Robert Gurrings(sp) personal boat built by Jewish POWs durring WW2. It was magnificantly carved from bow to stern. The story is the POWs thought as long as they kept working on it they would stay alive so they just kept carving.
I was told it was on its way to Seattle to be placed on display.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I was a second generation deck hand on the JIMCO out of Depoe Bay the summer of 1982 working for Chet Gardner. My dad was a deck hand for Chet’s dad (also Chet, I think) somewhere in the 50s. One interesting tidbit about fishing the JIMCO; we were the only charter boat in the bay that did not use rod holders. If you came to fish – you sat in your folding chair and held onto your fishing pole. Have to puke or go to the head? I’ll hold your fishing pole for you until you get back. Chet did not allow anyone in the cabin unless they had to use the head – regardless of the weather. I remember once a distinguished-looking man was getting very ‘green’ and jumped up for a dash to the head to blow chips in the toilet. Chet grabbed the guy as he headed down the steps to the cabin and turned him around toward the side of the boat. Unfortunately, the man didn’t make it to the side as he hurled into his hands and all over his face… a vision I can still see in my mind and it always brings a chuckle.
Chet always brewed a pot of coffee (coffee dumped in water and boiled) and had a box of doughnuts for the customers – his daily line as he served the coffee and doughnuts was “I’ve been baking my fingers to the bone!”. Chet has a coin business in Lincoln City that he still operates and my dad sees him on occasion.
As to Jim Conway – I first learned to fish for summer steelhead both on the North Fork of the Lewis and the Deschutes from him. He became friends with two of my friend’s dads and he wet fishing and hunted Sauvies Island with them a lot and provided a wealth of local fishing and hunting knowledge.
Now the JIMCO II...there’s another bunch of stories…

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
In 1969 and 70 I was stationed in Okinawa and had the pleasure to go fishing with an old sergent named Scotty, He told me he had two boats back in Depot bay that were leased to Tradewinds. I once asked Allen if he remembered him and he said yeah he worked for his dad. Just wondering if anyone ever heard of him I don't know what his other boats were called. He said the one we were on was japanese registry and he could not bring it back to the U.S.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Well, now were getting somewhere.....So it looks like Jim Conway had the Jimco built in 1947 in Astoria. Then sold it to Chet Gardner sometime before 1956. Chet then sold it to Fred Robinson. Fred Robinson then sold it to Chet Jr, and now it is in Port Angeles, WA.
Samson, that was some great information in your post. I was sure that Jim had owned the boat, as he had told me his life story one time, many years ago. Sure would like to see a picture of the Jimco II. Like to see how the Delta 50 was developed from that boat.
This has been a great thread, reliving some great old memories of that boat and Jim Conway.
But, now you got me thinking about "Cuckoos Nest." That was one of my all time favorite movies, I don't no how many times I went to see it. Every time I go through the hole at Depoe Bay I think about Jack Nicholson and his crazy band of escapees, the great day they had and their exitement when they caught a salmon. Another great memory.
Oh...by the way Sampson....3 posts, looks like you slipped in there sometime. "WELCOME ABOARD"
And thanks for the information.

Yes, welcome aboard Lars!
Thanks for straightening out the info there. Sounds like the Jimco was involved with the Coo Coo's nest in the filming of the Hyak which later sunk down south (the other north).
If anyone needs some historical data about Depoe Bay, Lars is the one to ask. He's been around here longer than Chief Depoe.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Welcome, Lars...I've been on your fishing stories with you, so maybe you can get away without telling one for me.
I recall the last owner (or at least operator?) of Jimco Dock was a guy with a new york accent who bought into it just as the ocean fishing tanked. He was politically active, though, always pushing for more fishing and mad at the government about just about everything. He finally sold it out, I think...don't recall the name, though.
It may not be the same Jim Conway.
One of Jim's sons committed suicide in the Columbia off Washington 14 somewhere, I think.
Jim himself died of a stroke, I think, at least 10 years ago...I could probably chase down the story if someone needs it...

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
The Jimco Dock was started by my parentsFred&Bev Robison in the late 50,s. They had been operating their boat named Jimco at Tradewinds inDepoe Bay.Tradewinds was owned by Vic Deets and Stan Allyn. My parents ventuerd out on their own and started Jimco Dock named after their boat Jimco. Jim Conway was never an owner of Jimco Dock.my parents sold it to Bruce Chown in 70's.it then changed owners several times untill Lee Woodard of Lake Oswego bought it.He was theowner at the time of the salmon closures.

Hi to all of you hard working 'and playing' boaties!
My name is Tracy, (and am the current owner of the Jimco)... so I basically was on a mission to find JIMCO history, by starting a new thread; However, after finding THIS thread, I really don't have to. I thank anyone involved with sending info my way...
...being I ended up with a surprise phone call, from Fred Robinson himself. (The Jimco dock owner)... also I got an email from his son Lars. If anyone feels the urge to throw Jimco stories my way, "Please"... Keep them coming!

Chet Gardner, now there is a name from the past. That guy would take out a load of passengers and come in with limits, all chinook! I was amazed.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Fantastic thread. I always wondered what happened to the Jimco. Back in 1963-63 growing up in SE Portland I belonged to the Pal Club (Boys Club). They loaded a bunch of us kids up on a bus and took us down to a day of free salmon fishing on the Jimco and another boat that I can not recall the name of. That was a real high spot for us (at the time) kids. The Jimco Charter folks treated us really well, and it was a darn nice and special thing for those folks to load their boats with some city kids and hook them up with some salmon. What amazing patience they had. My brother caught a nice chinook and they plaster his picture on the front page of the "Portland Report" newspaper with a story anbout the trip. (That paper was started up during the Oregoinian strike in the 60s)
I remember the Jim Conway show and just located my "Jim Conways Steelheading Guide" with an introduction by Doug Baker. The GI Joess price tag still on it is $1.49.
Thanks for starting this thread!!!

USCGBoating (Dan), I've read that thread b4, and have even repeated (relayed) it to the current captain of the (original) Jimco, about how no one was aloud in the cabin, except to use the head... especially not for BLOWING CHUNKS!! Lol
btw, That tradition 'continues' - 'same rule' applied to this day -
and I'm sure there are 'twice' the stories of Chet since there are 2 of them

IRISHROVER,
Hmmm... kids loaded the bus up, and headed to the dock for a FREE CHARTER?? Sounds like de'juvu from the Coocoo's Nest movie, lol.
Though in the movie they actually did their charter on a different boat. The JIMCO was the one (in the movie) that a patient 'STARTED to UNTIE! -'Right b4' they pulled out on the charter... and Jack Nicholson said to him, "NOT THAT ONE!!" (The Jimco's name is quite visible on the side of the boat too.)
That was the BEST SCENE! The mental patients, 'grinning from ear to ear', with the 'BORROWED' boat, as they held a couple of HUGE FISH up that they caught... AS THEY SAILED RIGHT PAST the POLICE and BOAT OWNER!! -
'THAT PART' reminds me of a big GROUP of KIDS too!

I had the best time of my life the tree years I was stationed in Depoe Bay. Great community and great memories.
A bit if trivia; I was talking to my Dad the other day about the One Few Over the Coo Coo Nest movie and the gentleman who played the director of the mental institution was the actual Director of the Oregon State Mental Hospital at the time. He had a cameo as himself!

OK, After looking again, I think that 'IS' the JIMCO (aside from the obvious name on the transom )... the JIMCO II is about 48' and is noticeably taller, when standing next to it from the dock, and the JIMCO being 40'.
When I get a chance, I will create a PHOTO ALBUM of the current JIMCO RESTORATION.

DAN,
I've ALSO heard that all of those mental patients were NOT actors, but actual patients! And that Jack Nicholson actually ad-libbed that scene with them.
I ALSO AlSO heard: that guy that worked at the dock wasn't an actor either (the guy that basically asked them, "what they were doing on that boat??") WHO is HE?
Here's the movie scene link again, where that part isn't cut out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jReNeEHH2lQ ...This particular clip is 2:45 and the guy I'm wondering about it shown at 1:54. again... He's trying to figure out why these guys are on one of their boats!!

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Hi Lars. Just to add to the Jimco dock history, the facility was originally built by Columbia River Packers Assoc (CRPA) prior to the war who bought salmon and crab there. There used to be around 40-60 small trollers who used the harbor during the salmon runs. CRPA used an unloading hoist located on the very top floor that took forever to cycle up and down. The place included a walk-in cooler, freezer, crab processing area and crabmeat shaking room as well. The office sat above the main story at the extreme South end.
They closed this plant when the Corps of Engineers dammed the channel to deepen and improve the harbor. My Dad, Eldon Bates (Depoe Bay Fish Co), bought the plant from CRPA in the early 1950's for $3,000.00 and proceeded to dismantle all removable equipment and machinery. He then sold the place to your dad, Fred, for the same dollar amount as purchased it for as he had a great respect for your dad (who used to work at our old fish plant there).
Just for others info, the old Sea Trollers building at the NE end of the bay was originally built prewar for Yaqiuina Bay Fish Co to buy salmon and crab until also closing it when they dammed the channel. One other fish company used to be there as well, New England Fish Co located about halfway between the Jimco dock and our old fish plant on the far South end of the bay which closed in the early 1960's leaving just our plant open until the good salmon managers in early 1980's made the fishery next to impossible to maintain profitability in.
I cannot think of a better place in the world for a boy to grow up in as Depoe Bay was: 300+ people year'round and a 2 room schoolhouse with 6 grades, ocean on one sidee, bay and creeks on the other with forest lands behind.

My photo file is too big, and won't download.
I'll have to review 'how to reduce photo size'.
Today may be 'too busy' to do it though.

No clue who the guy on the dock is. The director was a Captain in the Naval Reserve and my dad was in his unit in Portland. His name was Dr. Brooks. My sister also just told me that there was a guy from out home town that was a patent there that was pone of the guys looking out the window when Jack Nickelson drove in. That was a long time ago.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
I fished out of Depoe 3-4 times a year 1980-90. I remember the big open wooden boat Jimco with the huge teak deck dance floor. Everyone in their own deck chairs set about on a open deck boat looking like 1940.
You didn't mention she's for sale . I see your ad on Seatles Craiglist.
*JIMCO*ORIGINAL*'ONE OFF'-1947 40' MONK(('most of the way' RESTORED)) - $60000 (Seattle)
She's is the boat I remember. I remember the curved wood on side glass on bulkhead. I thought she was more rounded in stern, but the gunnels corners on inside must be round. My flash from past , Thanks , good times.
You need some beter photo's in your ad , a shot of the swing dance floor

YAHOEEFISHON,
It's interesting you should say that, being 'every time' I look at the deck,
I think of a party where dancing could break out, at any time, lol.

"Wow." There's one of my pics ...
That one is when it still only had primer on it, btw.
"Yes" It's true about she's for sale. I guess I didn't mention it bcuz my intentions, coming to this site weren't for solicitation reasons... "PLUS" part of me is 'procrastinating' letting 'er go, so I can spend 'just a little more time wit 'er!' "MINE" lol ... "OK!" "OK!" I'll share!
I actually have 'er posted only on the Oregon Coast and in Alaska. I would feel pretty good (if someone were interested enough in it) if the buyer might be from it's original home. My second choice is Alaska, being there's no doubt that someone up there, really utilizing her capabilities, would greatly 'appreciate' her, as well.
and 'yep'. Deck pics are definitely in the near future! I was so bummed, I had camera issues the day of the launch, where you could actually see the deck without climbing the stair ladder 'and' it was 'in' the water.

"Oh yeah"... Once I get a photo album going, I have quite a few angels of the boat that shows some of those beautiful 'wooden curves'.
Did you happen to notice in the ad that I have in my possession, the original Blue Prints (dated 1946) for the JIMCO. I was kind of happy when I learned that we have them.

Re: Historic Boat: JIMCO of Depoe Bay
Jim Conway...wan't he known as "Lucky Jim". If so, he fished once out of PC with my step-father when he chartered a dory for Sears Sporting Goods.
My dad called Jim "Huff & Puff" because he was always out of breath as he was reeling in the fish. Seems like he always had the clicker on he reel too. Can anyone confirm those memories of Jim?

You 'must be' talking about the same Jim that 'ALSO had a tv show', bcuz I
remember someone mentioning him as huff and puff, as he reeled in the fish.

My husband works for All Sports now, and YES the picture of the Jimco is STILL on the wall in the office. All Sports has been bought out by a company in South Carolina, called BIG ROCK SPORTS. They still kept the name All Sports, but are a small part of a larger company now. The main office is now in S.C.
