Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Anyone thinking about a Tuna! run out of DB this weekend if weather improves over the next few days? Been out of town for a week and after reading about Popeye and crew's big adventure I've got the itch like a dog with fleas.
Saturday might be doable, anybody interested?

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Sensai- maybe down south but the SST is looking great at the CR and the Tuna were still here as of last Saturday. There's a GREAT temp break real close in right now (124 35).
Maybe not the huge numbers we were getting a few weeks back, but who knows! We just might have to see this Saturday.

Lucky Luke, Small Fry- you got mail!
OB- the repairs are never done, just under control (most of the time)? :depressed:
Round one is complete except for a pin hole in the new exhaust he's gotta drill out and weld in place this week. Round two is in Oct. when I can get scheduled in for a pullout. Round 3 hasn't been figured out yet (mostly how to pay for it).
PS- Lucky- don't wear a good dress unless it's red!

OOOKKKKKKeee.....I have to admit that I'm gettin a bit nervous. What kind of voyage am I signing up for? Perhaps the Salty dogs forum is just a conduit to be shanghi'd. Red dress? Perhaps I'll start with a white one, and dye it red with TUNA blood!
Jen, can you vouch for this guy? Wait a minute...you're the one that suggested the dress!
Mel, thanx for the offer to go out. I'll give you a jingle if I don't hear from you again. Luke

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Mel - I'm hoping that the weather and the water conditions stay for jussstttt one more trip -- please Fish Gods, please!
If you are going out this week-end and there is anyway that I can manage it, I'll be there.
Can you help a newbie cross the CR bar? We have been launching from DB and NP under relatively good conditions when we have gone out. Now coming back was a little different story a few times.
Would welcome hanging on your wing if that is do-able. I'm trying to talk NorRiver Dave into a trip. Might have an open seat also.

Luke - Gee, you're going over to the dark side with Mel? After all I've done for you too!
I MAY be making one last run out for Tuna this week. Was looking at possibly thursday but the forcast has gone bad for then. Maybe the weekend, either Saturday or Sunday.

Sun

Will have to see what it looks like as it gets closer, and what the SST is looking like by then. Spoke with someone today at Englunds who said they're out around 125 20 out of Newport/DB area. That's an awful long run...50 miles or so..doable, but the ocean would have to lay down pretty well to go for it. With the slower troll this time of year, could spend a little more gas on the run out since don't have to troll so fast or much. Will just have to wait and see though.

Hey Nancy,
I have a soft spot for the Jypzee. It was great to get out with you and chase the Salmon earlier this summer. I hope I have the opportunity to visit the ocean on her decks again soon. Mel, hasn't chimed in on the joke, I hope we didn't scare him away.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Luke, Mel is a little forgetfull. Make sure you have him write your name on his forhead the night before. Otherwise his altzheimers is pretty bad on Saturday morning. It gets better during the day after the salty air gets into his ol'factory system.
Mel, I can only imagine seeing Luke in a red dress. This boy is a tall drink of water and may be more than you can handle. Wear a side arm just in case. I can vouch for Luke. Met him this summer in Hammond when he was hanging with Snapshot. Very pleasant person and is truely "Lucky". He's a worthy virgin ready for sacrifice.

Thanx for chiming in. Was it Mel's boat that you had your tuna adventure on earlier this summer? Your discription of how tuna sound when they see the boat really made me long to experience going after these fish.

Lukas, how come you never offered to wear a dress when you went out on my boat. I feel slighted. Mel will probably prefer a short skirt that will show off your hairy legs. Have a fun time, Mel is a great skipper.

George,
I don't know what to say, a dress in my size is hard to find. :depressed: You have a beautiful duckworth and all but Mel has a yacht!
How has your weekend been? Have you done well out on the river? I still can't believe we brought a sturgeon to the boat on an Alvin. Stay in touch. I had a great time fishing with you and hope that we are able to do more of it in the future. Lucky Lucy ( A mini dress, are you sure?)

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Hi Sensei, not sure if your friend just had an off day or what, because there are still a number of decent scores being posted yesterday & today from Santa Cruz to Bodega. One charter boat out the gate had 38 tuna today. Also a number of 4 - 15 fish scores for private boats, and reports of 62 to 65 deg water. This info from a charter skipper in Bodega I spoke with last night, and also the coastside fishing club website.
The warm northerly sub-surface current has been really strong this year. Yes the chunk of it just north of Blanco does appear to have weakened all of a sudden, but hopefully it will come right back if this NW wind would abate for a few days.
See ya...........MArk

The fish were there last Thursday in force! They were also huge fish with the small ones going 25 lbs.
Don't give up yet Dogs, we will run again! Sunday up north is really starting to look good. May have to try the big CR tuna run this weekend...hmmmmmmmmmm.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Best catch Alaska Air Flight 540 out of Portland for San Diego. The SST charts show that the waters have left the NW and headed south. I talked to some friends in SF and they said that the tuna have left the SF Bay Area and that the closest tuna for them is Monterey or Morro Bay.
An old tuna fisherman said that when you see acres of small jumpers or breezers that is the time that the big ones have left and gone south. He said that most of the time the small jumpers are mackerel replacing the tuna. My nephew said that he saw that the last time he was out last week off Winchester Bay.

Sensai, holding tickets on Alaska 572 and its looking good...
FRI
NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. NW SWELL 4 TO 6 FT. AREAS OF FOG.
SAT AND SUN
NW WIND 10 TO 15 KT. WIND WAVES 2 FT OR LESS. NW
SWELL 4 TO 6 FT.
Cancel that, they want $472 and won't even guarantee me a TUNA! Think I'll hope for local conditions to improve over the next few days, stranger things have happened. Flatties and hogs is things don't work out.

I don't have any conflicts if we need to go again Sunday or cancel Saturday. Might need to order a Fuel Truck Late Saturday after we get in.
But whatever we do, we need to get back accross the Bar no later than 5:00pm on Saturday. It's
gonna scream after that.
SK, if we go Sunday there's plenty of room with me.

Luke, I bet you could find a nice red dress to fit you at one of those outlet stores that caters to big and tall women. I think there's one in Troutdale. But hey, you'll need to find some deck shoes to match. Although I think Mel prefers stillettos, they're awful hard on the deck.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Mel, your forecast looks about right, the other one was from San Diego where all them Tuna are.
Sunday or Monday maybe??? 45, 124 40 or thereabouts looks marginal right now. Trip this weekend is a big tentative at the moment, we'll have to see what the next couple of days brings us. Come on wind gods -- settle down a bit and give us one more decent weekend run.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Bucky, Now there is a man with realistic expectations. Glad you have a Plan B. Flatties and hogs sounds like a real possibility especially since they give you three salmon inside Bouy 10.
Still say that tuna have gone to Mexico for the winter like doves. The Navy SST charts shows the warm water in hot retreat.

Yup, he does have nice golden locks. Lucy Locks.

No tight fitting stuff though Luke. Kind of ruins the effect. Hope to see ya this weekend.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
I think any dress Lukas gets into will be tight. I also think it will probably take a couple of really big guys to hold him down long enough to get him properly dressed. I don't think I want to be there for that part.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Rod.....I was wondering, at what distance did you guys get into the tuna? Did you fish your way out or stop for a while and fish on your run out? What kind of water temps did you see out there? Were there tuna out in that 100, plus mile range?
Give us a little tuna fishing story, to keep us going.....
Jerry

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
We've been starting bout 20 miles off the CR and fishing to about 35 max all season. Thats 25-40 off the beach, but add another 5 miles for river travel from Hammond (a few more from Warrenton).
The temp/current break we missed (cause we were outside on a bottom trip fishing in) last weekend was only 20 miles off the CR. SST still shows the same break last check.
Whos knows? Thats why they call it fishing!
One thing about this weekend, tides are early. Looks like an OMG thirty (4:30 am) dock departure in the dark ( and Oh No Mr Bill--- maybe fog  ) so that we can get back by 3 or 3:30 across the bar. Big afternoon outgoing this weekend. :depressed:
PS- why aren't we all there right now? CR weather bouy:
Significant Wave Height (H0): 3.6 ft
Swell Height (SwH): 3.0 ft
Swell Period (*** ): 10.0 sec
Swell Direction (SwD): NW
Wind Wave Height (WWH): 1.6 ft
Wind Wave Period (WWP): 4.3 sec
Wind Wave Direction (WWD): NW
Wave Steepness (STEEPNESS): SWELL
Average Wave Period (AVP): 6.0 sec

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
It's looking somewhat doubtful that I'll be heading out for Tuna this weekend after all. The warm water has moved way out from Depoe Bay area with 59-60 degree water way past the 125 line. :depressed: :depressed:
IF it turns and moves back in, maybe I'll still go if I can get the boat gassed up.

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
I dunno Nancy, look at it again...bring up the 9/24, 11:55 Coastwatch shot, and convert the range from 52 to 64 deg F, and see what it looks like. By this shot, it shows a 59/60 deg edge well inside of the 125. Granted, this probably has some daytime warming. Then looking at the 9/24 3:30 am shot, yes it is 1-2 deg cooler, but hey what's wrong with 58/59 deg water this time of year? That's where the hogs are anyway.
OK so I'm hopelessly optimistic!!
(edit: I see that the terrafin shots conflict with the same coastwatch shots on their temperatures. Perhaps the truth is in between?)
p.s. Coos Bay is starting to look real fishy...

Re: Needin\' a Tuna Fix
Luke, maybe you better cancel out and let me go in your place. I am already deflowered  and will not need a dress or matching shoes for the trip. Does the wife know about your fetish for wearing womens clothes? Keta, nice idea on the ruby slippers.
