Default freezing rain on top of the snow....not good for animals!!

Hope this freezing rain doesn't go too far! Not good for the wildlife. They can dig through snow, but the ice causes big problems.

Yep, this isn't good, 16 inches of crusted snow at 700 feet, over 20 inches at 2,000 feet. Duration will be the key. The Cedar Creek enclosure study done on Blacktail deer noted that snow cover exceeding 30 days cause mortality. Don't know if that was consecutive or accumulated days. Darn, and we had such a good fall this year.

We had 20 inches of snow, 1/4" of ice, and now another 4 inches of snow. One weatherman hinted at another big snow maker coming in Wednesday! The local deer seem to be breaking through and browsing okay, they're staying under the trees where the ice isn't really built up.

Last nights high winds knocked alot of limbs down and alder seeds out, so the birds have been picking around on the surface getting food.

A friend called and said he heard mid-50's next weekend. Anybody else hear that?

ihunt told me earlier it was 38* and raining hard this evening in John Day!

yeah that ice on the top of the snow is bad it is much harder to manuever in also, you have lost any stealth advatage you had with powder snow cuz the ice is very loud

I don't see any 50 degree days in the 15 day forecasts, in fact after this weekend gets up in the 40's, it looks like we cool down again. John Day, just plain looks ugly for the next 15 days.

Andy Carson on 12 is forecasting 50-plus this next weekend, with rain. I hope not, that could be disasterous. Channel 8 has a possibility of the Wednesday system dropping farther south, which would mean another MAJOR snow event!!!

We've been shoveling the concrete off in the back and throwing out bird feed, the little things have been flocking in.

Our blacktail populations can't stand a long-term event like this!!

The buck I just shot in the Willy unit had ZERO fat on him.

Brian,,,Brian,,,Brian!

On the serious side, most rutting bucks burn a lot of the fat off, so they aren't a good gauge of the conditions.
