Default Are coyotes considered game animals?

I tried searching the forum and the regs and, either I missed it or it's not there, I can't find out whether coyotes are considered game animals.

Can anyone point me to an answer?

Yes, though you do need a license but not a tag and their is no specific
season for them

Actually, NO they are not classified as game mammals. They are classified as a Predatory Animal and are subject to different regulations than game mammals.

Oregon Revised Statute (ORS) - 610.002 “Predatory animals” defined. As used in this chapter, “predatory animal” or “predatory animals” includes feral swine as defined by State Department of Agriculture rule, coyotes, rabbits, rodents and birds that are or may be destructive to agricultural crops, products and activities, but excluding game birds and other birds determined by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission to be in need of protection. [1959 c.240 §2; 1971 c.658 §29; 1977 c.136 §4; subsection (2) of 610.002 renumbered 610.003; 1979 c.399 §2; 2001 c.125 §2]

First off, The language I cited was a statute, not a rule so note the correction above. (Brain Lock)

Predatory Animals (feral swine, coyotes, rabbits, rodents, etc...) are covered by statutes and rules other than those that cover game animals. The reason is that predatory animals are considered damaging to the state's agriculture so their regulation technically falls under the purview of the State Department of Agriculture.

What that means is that things like caliber restriction, sales of parts or skins and certain other hunting restrictions don't apply to predatory animals. NOTE: Bears and Cougars ARE NOT predatory animals as defined by the State of Oregon, they are game mammals.

To get a clear picture of what's legal and what's not, a person should read all of ORS 610 and also ORS 498.012 and ORS 498.146. Or you could just go to one of Rusty's seminars and learn all about it

Hope that helps -

Coyotes are fair game year round. Only a hunting license is required.

Bobcat and fox are considered furbearers (special seasons) and require a Hunting License for Furbearers ($12.50), and bobcats will also require a Bobcat Record Card ($11.50).

Next time you shoot one, eat it...then try and tell me that it's a "game animal"

Actually, licenses are only required on public lands, if you are on private you must be an agent of the landowner and NO license is required. Agent generally means having permission to be there and permission to be shooting things.

Page 9 in the new regs - LANDOWNERS
_ A landowner or landowner agent does not need a hunting or trapping license to take predatory animals on land they own, lease,
lawfully occupy, possess, or have charge of or dominion over. See page 82 for the definition of a predatory animal.
