Default Sailor from Washington boat rescued

OMG!!!     I know this guy. He left from Newport in early June of this year. The scary thing is he left with his wife and son. I hope they're alright. I wish I had a way of contacting him.

Is this the same guy that sent someone on this board an email about catching a TUNA! while underway? As I recall, we were anticipating an early TUNA! season...

I hope his wife and child are okay! no mention of them in the article

Hmmm it could be I suppose. I showed him how to rig up for them before he left here. He was excited about trying to get some fresh tuna while out at sea.

Well I just picked this up off of the Coast Guard web page. I'll have to try to get ahold of Marcus and try to find out what happened. The Ra (their sailboat) was a nice boat. Marcus and his wife took a sailing class, sold everything they had, and bought the boat (not too sure about their decision there, but they did what they wanted)...they had it well equiped and fixed it up and planned to circum-navigate for a year. They had it docked in South Beach over last winter and spring till they left.

Coast Guard assists vessel in distress
HONOLULU - A Coast Guard C-130 Hercules airplane from Coast Guard Air Station Barbers Point launched at 1:10 a.m. today in response to an Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon 500 nautical miles north east of Hilo, Hawaii.
The US sailing vessel RA, home ported in Wash., was taking on water and had three dewatering pumps engaged. The Coast Guard Joint Rescue Coordination Center diverted the Japanese Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System vessel KATSURAGI at 1:54 a.m. to assist the boater. The C-130 located the vessel at 3:14 a.m. and dropped another pump to the man aboard.
The four pumps were unable to keep the RA afloat. The man, Marcus Dubrow, had to abandon his vessel at approximately 4:30 a.m. with a raft, radio, EPIRB and flares.
The vessel KATSURAGI arrived on-scene and picked up the man at 4:11 p.m.
The vessel KATSURAGI will be arriving in Honolulu Harbor Wednesday at 8:00 a.m.
AMVER tracks volunteer vessels across the world’s oceans and requests assistance from them in case of emergency.
The cause of the incident is under investigation.

His wife and son were not on the boat at the time of the incident. They had just been back to Newport for a visit, and then flew to Hawaii last Sunday. Marcus was sailing from Mexico to Hawaii to meet up with them, and they were going to head on from there.

The word we got from Linda, was that Marcus thought he struck something in the middle of the night (possibly a lost container from a container ship). The Ra was a steel hulled boat, and it must have taken something pretty substantial to open it up.

Apparently he was suffering from advanced hypothermia by the time he got picked up. It was very fortunate that the whole family wasn't on the boat at the time.

Thanks for the update Chum King. I'm glad to hear that they were not on the Ra.

BTW: You have email.

Whew, I just got an email from Linda. Marcus' wife. I don't think she would mind me posting it here as there's really nothing overly personal in it.

=======================
HI NANCY,

this is linda replying for marc....the boat hit a container about five hundred miles from hilo and luckily marc had emergency epirb and life raft
(he spent 10 hours awaiting rescue over night after the boat sank) a freighter picked him up ...a very difficult rescue because he had only one chance to grab onto this floating city...anyway he is in hawaii with us now
(elliot and I got off the boat in Mexico - I had a major panic attack and decided to fly - thank god). We are so thankful that he is alive, and don't care about the loss of material things.

anyway, thank you for your concern...please let everyone know that we are safe and well.
